Former Cardiff City owner Rick Wright dies after suffering stroke, aged 81

Former Cardiff City owner Rick Wright has died, aged 81.

Wright, who was chairman from 1992 until 1995, passed away in Brisbane earlier today 12 days after suffering a stroke.

During his time at the Bluebirds’ helm Wright became a club legend along with manager Eddie May who passed away in his sleep aged 68 in April earlier this year.

Wright and May guided the club into the old Division Three in 1993 after securing promotion as Division Four champions – the club’s first outright league title since 1947.

Rick Wright looks proudly on as Phil Stant lifts the Welsh Cup.

In what was a memorable season for Cardiff fans, Wright boosted the profile of the Bluebirds with signings of star players Kevin Ratcliffe, Phil Stant, Carl Dale and Robbie James.

Stant, Chris Pike and Nathan Blake scored the bulk of Cardiff’s 77 goals that season as they stormed the division.

While he was Cardiff City chairman, Wright – a former Army combat diver and commercial diver who left school aged 13 – lived in a council house in Barry Island.

Born in Openshaw, Manchester, was a working class boy made good having made his fortune initially in the hotel industry and later as the owner of Barry Island’s Majestic Holiday Centre.

When he took over City he said he would stay two seasons and, despite promotion, he was true to his word.

Wright, then 59, introduced the innovative idea of a sliding-scale ticket-price system – with fans paying more if the team were challenging near the top and handing the ownership of the club over to the young fans club the Junior Bluebirds.

There was also the offer of a £1m bonus for players for promotion from Division Three.

Wright saw Cardiff City as a business venture – and believed he could make Ninian Park a ‘super-stadium’.

“I want to give the people of South Glamorgan a stadium to be proud of,” said Wright, while at the helm.

Very sad, that's him and Eddie upstairs and back together again.

Wonderful part of CCFC history, how could you forget him and what he achieved and tried to achieve.

Some great awaydays.

RIP RW, and sincere condolences to the Wright family and friends.

RIP Rick

In some ways rhe guy who set the wheels in motion for Sam to see the potentiall of the club.

Scunthorpe May 93 i spoke to Rick before kick off and the look of near panic in his face when he realised that City had taken over 2 thirds of the ground was a pictue.

Say Hi to Eddie for me Rick, RIP Bluebird

Sad news indeed. Great what he did for us I remember when he bought all the Blue seats for Ninian Park and enhanced the stadium, having the largest junior fanbase in the uk at one point was awesome. He stayed true to his word and walked away. RIP Rick and thanks for your time at the stadium in many ways you helped the propelled the club forward and for that we will always be grateful

I wasn't even born when Rick Wright was in charge, but I've read enough and seen enough over the past few years to know he was the one who started it all, not Sam.
