What a fantastic week, we totally destroyed Blackpool, comfortably beating them in every area of the pitch and the truth is we should have put more goals on them than we actually did but I am sure we will accept a three nil win any day of the week!
Then we follow it up with win against Birmingham in midweek to send the Bluebirds soaring to the top of the league.
In the first nine games of the season, Malky Mackay has outwitted two of the league’s most wily managers in Ian Holloway and Neil Warnock, and in doing so also equalled our best ever winning start at home – five successive victories previously set by the championship-winning team of sixty six years ago.
We are one point ahead of what is usually a target that gets teams promoted, averaging two points from every game played.
This team has shown in the first fifth of the season that it has the quality to be at the right end of the table and there is very little doubt that with every player available the bench looks very strong also, who would have thought that the colossal Ben Turner would be sitting on the bench waiting for his time to come, at the season start I am certain every City fan would have had his name as one of the first on the team sheet but such as been Matt Connolly’s recent performances that Turner has to bide his time, and rightfully so.
Mark Hudson has been a true leader so far this season, he got the campaign off to the perfect start with his 90th minute winner against Huddersfield and defensively he has been solid throughout the first couple of months and again on Tuesday evening he chalked up another goal and an assist to boot.
I have been cock-a-hoop all week since we went to the summit of the Championship but I am sure Malky and his staff will be warning the players that now is not the time for anyone who can affect the results on the pitch to be getting carried away.
Now is not the time to rest on our laurels though, despite climbing to the top of the league, there is definitely a need to bring in a couple of extra players, we are short of cover at both full back positions, Kevin McNaughton could certainly cover Andrew Taylor if he got himself injured or suspended but who would slot in at right back?
What if McNaughton himself is side-lined for some time?
I have written before that I feel this squad would be complimented if we had a tall, strong, goal scoring target man and I am still of that belief.
I hope that recent good results will not lead us into complacency but it should be a spur for us to act to now, to win the division or to be automatically promoted then every game is vital, we cannot afford to drop points in a few games because we have suffered injuries to one or two players in certain positions.
We have got a squad that is 95% of what it should be in terms of cover for each position, we have spent in excess of £10million in assembling a squad to try and win the Championship, if we are going that far then we must now go full tilt and cover every eventuality and have the cover in every position.
It would be insane if we sit and wait for injuries that may happen before we react, we should act now and what better time to convince a player to come to the club than when we are top of the league.
Go for it Malky Mackay, you have the backing of Vincent Tan, the trust of the players and the support of the Bluebirds faithful, you are a studious manager and with a couple of more players in certain positions, you will be geared up to make history as a Cardiff manager.

What a great post Carl I feel so much better after reading it. I have to admit Connelly has been brilliant and I'm sure he could do a job at right-back if needed.
However, for me player of the season so far has been Mark Hudson. Not only has he been a rock at the back but he has also turned into a part-time creator and scorer of goals. This season he has made an absolute mockery of people like me who have slated him in the past.

Carlos.
Malky's words at a meeting I attended 2 months ago.
" The teams that spent last January all got promoted, we or the rest of the division did not and so they went up."
Its been happening to us for 6 years.
Lets hope we spend this January, if we want to go up.

Except Middlesbrough and Brighton who went from play off spots to missing out completely.

Who is the tall strong goalscoring target man we should get though? There aren't many of these who exist and certaintly not many who are willing to play championship football.
I think we as fans find it far to easy to say we need this and that but its a lot harder to put a name, price and package together that would get them here.

Malky's words not mine, but I do agree with him.

Agree 100% with you Carl. I've said in another thread that now we are in a position of strength it would be the best time to fill the two gaps we have ie. a forward to cover for NM (preferably a target man who could also cover for HH should he get injured) and a FB as we are definitely too light in that area. If MM acts now there is nothing in this league to stop us

I do agree with the sentiment definitely.

There are one or two floating about, Kenwyn Jones maybe, what about Charlie Austin, I bet there are a few in the European leagues as well.

Like what you say about Hudson Tony, far too long has he been the player who is constantly criticised by our fans and I don't know why.

Great news.
Some decent players out there for that sort of cash.

Connor Wickham would be a good shout. He knows the league and is out of favour at Sunderland.

yeah good write up carl, yes our season could be turned on its head with a few key injuries, and theses boltons, blackpools, blackburns. etc, might spend a few quid in jan, so we must try and compete?

To be fair, we wouldn't have needed another striker without the injury to Maynard. Rudy Gestede would be alright for an option off the bench from time to time, but I couldn't see him holding down a regular place for an extended period of time.
What worries me is that Helgusson will run himself into the ground and lose form, rather like Miller last year.
I don't think Malky will rush. He obviously thinks young Nugent can do a job at fullback if needed, added to the fact that Connolly can play full back aswell. Barring any serious long term injuries he will probably wait until January.
Exciting times indeed.
Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:28 pm
Personally I don't see the need for a fullback, wasted money on a loan.
Connelly can fill in for a few games, maybe nugent and John have impressed? If we got a long term injury then loan someone in.
Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:39 pm
Is connor wickham an improvement? He's not played much, probably on a huge wage and would need at least a few games to get upto speed. Do we want to spend a lot on his wage, and is he better than helguson??
On kenwyn jones, I'd like to see him with us, but again he's prob on a very decent prem wage, would he come to us? Or would he prefer a loan move around his area?

" The teams that spent last January all got promoted, we or the rest of the division did not and so they went up."
so its simply a question of who can spend the most money?
what happened to good management and tactics....... the words of a chequebook manager!

I'd say to much the other way if anything.

If Connor Wickham is available, then he is the clear choice for a forward on loan.
The only way we'll get Austin is by buying him in January - not loaning him as some have ludicrously suggested - and even then, it's unlikely that Burnley will let him go and if we've only £3m left to spend then we definitely won't get him.

I don't think austin would come to us. If he's going to move he's going up a division.
And really don't think wickham would improve the team, might improve the squad but not the team.

I haven't seen loads of wickham but when I have I've felt let down.
Austin in January would depend on where we are I think. If a prem club don't come in (i don't think they would risk it in jan) then he may join us but we would need more than the 3m

Part of me is thinking yes we need another striker as Bellers appears to be picking his games at the moment
But part of me is also thinking what the hell is this Slovian like ? Our bench is the Man City of the championship

That's also my thinking, not a dig at MM but he paid 1m plus wages for someone who hasn't been tried so why do people think he will get someone better on loan?
