The Olympics

Sun Aug 12, 2012 7:25 pm

What was your views on them before it started and now it has coming to a close ?
And has it made you proud to be British ? I know on here there are proud Welshmen, Englishmen, Scotsmen, And Irishmen (Northern) has it re ignited the Great Britain ?. Normally a war is needed to ignite this but these games have been fantastic. Look how the crowd shouted Freddie Freddie that was deafening for a Welsh born boxer. I was cheering on a Lad from Hull yesterday in the Boxing, then found myself shouting for :ayatollah: Mo last night until i was hoarse.
For these games it hasn't been about the home nations it was about becoming one GREAT BRITAIN :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Couldn't have cared less before it started but I have slowly come round. The highlight for me was the Judo one day, I've never ever watched the sport, don't have a clue about it, but the British girl, on winning her semi final and just breaking down into tears straight away was one of the highlights for me. Just to see how much it meant to her... Brilliant!

Totally agree the atmosphere at the events has been brilliant, I was a bit indifferent before the games started, but have been totally won over especially the boxing/rowing/Tai kwan do/cycling and the women's boxing. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I was glad we got the Olympics, and it has proved we can deliver on the international stage

Well said, Chief.

I was proper cynical beforehand, but I've loved it and watched loads of it. Proud to be Welsh and proud to be British.

I ended up enjoying it! But this closing ceremony has been like a bad pop concert! Fukin shit....except for the john lennon bit that only lasted one song. The rest of it has been awful

Re: The Olympics

I was really looking forward to them before they started and I knew I would be watching them a lot. But then I ended up glued to the TV and even when I was away I was constantly checking the app on my phone, didn't expect to enjoy them this much.

Closing ceremony has been shite though, they had Only Fools on there for all of 9 seconds and 2 decent songs. Turned into chav's paradise now. They needed more from The Who, Clash, Stone Roses etc. And now the f*cking Spice Girls are on!!!

I would never feel affinity with a team that has what I consider to be "the butcher's apron" as their flag.

I am pleased when Welsh athletes do well - but its just a shame about the anthem and the flag they compete under.

As I do in most sporting competitions, I support anyone from the Celtic nations and Germany and Australia.

The flag waving BBC on their main channel have got right on my nerves and I've spent most of the time on the red button to avoid their inane babble on the main channels, as the coverage is not quite so bad and jingoistic on the red button (Michael Johnson excepted, who is a great pundit).

Proud to be British and anyone who wants an independent Wales are all National Socialists in my eyes. Pundits have wound me up particularly in the Athletics apart from the briliant Michael Johnson.

I'm not keen on Nationalism either - I'm quite proud to be a citizen of the European Union :ayatollah:

We all seem to agree on Michael Johnson - he's the man :ayatollah:

Butchers Apron now i find that offensive. This is about the Olympics not what you think of Britains past wars or whatever.

Re: The Olympics

I have enjoyed it much more than I thought I would and have supported most of the British Olympians apart from the football.

I am immensely impressed by what some of these people have achieved and only hope it can be built on and a generation inspired as they want. :ayatollah:

However. It hasn't made me British or proud to be British. I didn't watch or support those athletes because of the Queen or because they sing that anthem under that flag. I supported them as individuals who have excelled at something and realized their dreams.

I'm still Welsh not British.

Cymru am byth!

So by the standard of not supporting the "Butchers Apron" surely you cant cheer on Germany for what they did in WW2?

Blew me away in all fairness, I wasn't that optimistic or excited especially after the football had finished...

But I enjoyed the olympics more, so convenient to just wake up and turn on sport , Usually you gotta wait till saturday afternoon for that :x :x

Fred evans getting his silver medal was obviously the best day for me, he's been through so much trauma at his age 21 and to come through a games so modest

Well done.....It was a great event.

Word from over here is that Great Britain did an excellent job.

I will admit that I was a little irritated that most fans cheered against the States, the whole ally thing and all.....but I understand the "favorite" never gets cheered....However I would expect a little more sympathy form the Brits... :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Having lived in Sydney before and after their games I had seen all the cynics be turned around before so I knew it would happen.

I am so glad I woke up at 5am to watch the flame go through Dinas Powys and went to London last wednesday :ayatollah:

Re: The Olympics

Loved the olympics, really enjoyed it and found myself watching sports I would never usually consider.

My only complaint would be the opening/closing ceremonies; far too much spent on those. Both around £26 million and I would have settled for some fireworks, music and the flag-bearing alone.

Highlights for me

1-the dutch ladies Hockey Team :D
2-the norwegion Handball team :D
3-J.Ennis
4-v.Pendleton

that was it :ayatollah:

The irony is they will support Germany because of their politics in the 30s and 40s. All of those who call the union Jack the "Butchers Apron" are nazi sympathisers and see that as the way forward for Wales.

Sad but true.

Nukes, I didn't mean to offend - which is why I said, I personally could never feel affinity with a team flying that flag and with GSTQ as their anthem.

I was very pleased for individual athletes though - in fact, in most past Olympics, I've usually looked at it purely in terms of the individuals involved, but the BBC got so on my nerves this time with their jingoism, I did turn against team GB.

You clearly haven't read what I actually wrote accurately enough - I was talking about the team GB flag, which has not changed at all since the Empire days - your analogy with Germany I'm afraid is well off the mark, as :

1. The German flag is completely different to the one used by the villains who took over the country in 1930/1940s.
2. The people who were in charge of Germany in the war were well and truly ousted from power, and no vestige remains of them in the political powers in charge of Germany today.
3. Germany does not still hold onto part of its empire as the British do in the 6 counties of the Island of Ireland, which is one reason why I could never support a team with that flag as its emblem.

Supporting Germany these days has no bearing on the fact the country was taken over by a totalitarian power in 1933-1945.
