Lower back pain o/t

Sun Aug 05, 2012 6:38 pm

Any help with this would be great. I've had lower back pain for 8 days now. I've had back pain before but this is absolute agony. Sometimes I've been unable to even straighten my back. I've used ice, heat, major painkiller, alcohol, light exercise, rest and f**k all is working. It's affecting my job and have missed some time in work. I am over weight big time do that's prob the cause but can anyone suggest any thing that can help me be in work? Anything to help with the pain.

Can't get to doctors till Wednesday so your my only hope chaps

Is it just your back? Any pain down your leg? Is it a really sharp pain like you're being stabbed?

I swear by my "Tens machine" but no point in surmising what the problem is so best to get it checked out by the doc. Like I say I use a Tens rather than any medication, hope it eases up for you soon mate.

The Tens machine send a electrical current and confuses the nerve system and dulls the pain.

Einstein, you might as well have a power wank than go to your Doctor. They will give u some pills and show u the door. There are chiropractors out there that are crap but the guy at Cardiff bay is excellent in my view. :old:

Posture, sit up straight, walk with your back straight, adjust your car seat so your back is straight, no lounging around, and exercise just walking will do, most back pain comes from bad posture. Good luck.

Family member was going to a chiro for weeks before discovering via an X-ray that disk had gone completely and she had to have major op. any further pointless clicking could have paralysed her!

Chiropractors don't get to the root cause IMO

This is good advice.

But whatever else you do, get proper medical advice. See a doctor -if it continues insist on x-rays, mri whatever. Find out what is wrong. I've sufferred for years - I've got stress fractures in 2 facet joints and 4 degenerated discs, sometimes I couldn't do my laces up or get out of car- and that was as a fit 40-year old, I thought I'd have to pack sport in completely, I'd never had a muscular injusy, but now I was also getting torn hamstrings, calf muscles etc..it was heartbreaking. I tried everything, pain killers, chiro, steroid injections, but the best thing to control it was a course of physio, backed up with a sensible excercise schedule which I gradually built up. Its still a problem and a worry, but its under control now and I'm playing football 3 times a week now :ayatollah:

Good luck, but please, please find out whats causing with it and deal with it, or it could ruin your life.

You could have sciatica, its a never that runs down your lower back and the pain run down your leg.
Don't take pain killers till you see the Doc, as they will only mask the pain. To see the Doc is a must .

What this guy said! Also a long time sufferer, it's taken over my life but the more exercise I do although gd at the time it's makes it worse in the long run. I'm self employed heating engineer so my Job makes it worse. Docs say I need an op but don't want to do it as the one I need has a poor success rate. Going to go see a prvt doc in Bristol I have been recommended to.
But the point is to take your time and find out exatually what it is. Don't do chiro first, I did and it made me worse as they shouldn't work in bad discs. Go to docs, if too bad get into hospital for an MRI, after that spend a few hundred quid on seeing a prvt doc, for some decent advice.

Thats a fair point, but you need to insist he books you in for x-rays and a specialist if it doesn't sort itself quickly.

Stretches. I suffer from back pain, physio always drills into me about stretching. google for some ideas. Also posture, check yourself whilst driving/eating etc

Re: Lower back pain o/t

I think you can see from all the replies how common it is and treatment is very personal to the sufferer, ranging from one thing to many.

I've had a bad back for close to 9 months now, and had a few episodes of back pain over the years prior to that too. Back in October my spine was all over the place with muscle spasm, couldn't stand straight, bend, do my laces etc. I started going to Chiro and it does provide relief, but I don't think it is the cure to be honest. The massage side of it does me a lot of good rather than the spinal manipulation to be honest, and a Physio can administer that more cheaply than the Chirpractor! It started feeling a lot better, had a relapse in November, but then in December the disc went. I couldn't bloody move. I tried going to the Chiro, it took 45 minutes with assistance to get me out of the surgery into the car as my pain was so bad, and usually I have a high threshold. That gave me the kick up the arse to change my lifestyle. Joined the gym, went on a diet, stopped the fags etc. I've had a couple of relapses since but they usually now heal within a couple of days as my back is a lot stronger.

Like someone said above, find out the cause. Sciatica is just the symptom, a warning of something else that is wrong. Insist on an MRI scan at the docs, that will show everything that is going on in the area, whether disc, muscular etc.

I'm not saying all of these will work for you, but they have for me, different things work for different people, find what works for you:

Pilates: Sounds daft, but posture is the major cause of back problems, pilates will strengthen your core muscles (trans- abdominals, glutes, abs etc) which hold your back up in the correct position. There's plenty you can learn yourself from websites like Mens Health and Livestrong.

Steroid injection: If it's disk related consider a hydro-cortisol injection into the spine, it will give pain relief for 3-4 months giving you time to implement other corrective actions.

Stay active, I don't mean going all out and joining the gym etc, unless you really want to, I mean don't stay in one position too long, if you work at a desk get up and go for a stroll every hour for a couple of minutes if you can, just to loosen up the muscles. I try and go out for a walk every lunchtime, for half an hour walking briskly, that's enough to shed some weight to if you want.

Invest in a foam roller. £15 well spent IMO. try physioroom.com for one. you basically roll yourself over it focussing on the areas that are giving you pain. they relieve stress from the muscles, and it like getting a massage. you can hold it over pain trigger points to relieve the build up of pain and inflammation at certain points too.

Lose weight, go on a diet, do more exercise are the obvious ones too in the long term, but there's usually something very specific that is the cause and you need to find that.
