Says the guy who's arguing for the Olympics on another thread.....

Discovery of one of the greatest mysteries in the physical universe is probably not a waste of time by anyones standards.

So the advancements of science are a complete waste of time then??

If it wasn't for things like the large hadron collider and the experiments they do in them things then you wouldn't have been able to post this here topic on the internet at super fast speed calling it a waste of money Lol

So not only are you trying to kid us all that you have followed the club for many years you are now using terms like 'bra' to try and persude us that you are actually from cardiff

f**k me your a prick. Is that it again? Your best retort?

I know where I'm from and I'm massively proud of it. I also love Cardiff (the city itself and the people)
Very much. Else I'd never have lived there. We all say 'bra' where I live... It is just a phrase that
Took off. I say 'alright geezer' too.... But don't profess to be cockney like your hero

As for 'kidding everyone' that I been following the Club for years? Yeh Righto.

You get your arse kicked on that one too periodically, but your too stupid to let it go

Feller. Your too thick to win an argument with yourself.

In all honesty no-one really knows if those scientists have really found anything or not. After all no-one I know can get their heads around what a Higgs-Boson particle is, never mind how you detect one.

So they could be spinning us a line without anyone being aware of it.

They havent technically found the Higgs-Boson but the have found something that is consistent with the Higgs Boson but they need to do more experiments to confirm it

I'm not saying you are wrong djwayne but can you explain what a Higgs-Boson is and how it will benefit us in the future?

A lot of people are scratching their heads and just wondering whether the money put into these experiments could be used better else where. That doesn't mean we are brain dead, just devoid of information which explains why it is so important and whether these scientists have actually detected the partical.

The only evidence I have seen is a spike on a some kind of graph.

Essentialy the Higgs Boson is the fundamental particle that gives mass to everything. They are searching for it as it will make the creation of the universe easier to understand and will also give more proof for the Standard Model.

As for benefiting us in the future, CERN have been doing numerous experiments at the same time as this which will have further advancements in science.

But that then raises the question why all the fuss at that press conference the other day? TBH I suspect that their funding is under threat so they had to come up with something to justify their continuing experimentation.

Not gonna type a long explanation there is a very good article here for those that are interested.

All of the major discoveries of our time have come through research so how can research into something as potentially important as this be a waste of money?

Its because they have found something. Whether or not it is the Higgs Boson but they have found a new fundamental particle. But the evidence gained is very consistent with the theory behind the Higgs Boson so it is most likely to be the Higgs Boson. They just require further expriments to prove that it is what they got, which is important in Science, you dont say something worked on one experiment you need to do numerous untill there is substantial proof

My understanding was Higgs-Boson is some kind of force field which holds mass together, by stopping all atoms from travelling at the speed of light as they would do if unchecked by an outside influence.

It is hard to think of any practical use but apparently this was first theorised in 1964.

I suppose you are correct that this has advanced scientific understanding, but where do they go with it now?

You are correct it essentially interacts with the Higgs Field which then gives mass to quarks and electrons the fundamental particles.

They will continue to do further experiments towards finding further proof mainly using the LHC. To be honest it wont really have any benefit for society except to help us understand the universe. But the technology being used in the LHC is extremely advanced and could be used for society

Re: This 'God Particle'

I think its a bit like when we first discovered the atom! It didn't benefit us right there and then but it led to a lot of benefits in the future. Discovering and eventually understanding how these new particles like the higgs boson works, will eventually lead to new technology that will benefit humans in the future.. Things like new and cleaner energy resources, better communication technology, better treatment for disease etc

Re: This 'God Particle'

to quote the link i posted earlier and to give a realistic idea of application

“You might see a technology that helps us do imaging of mass [rather than just light or sound, like we currently have],” says Solomey. “Most of the universe is dark matter, with the Higgs, we can image our whole planet and the universe.” The result, then, would literally shed light on everything we’ve never seen before, from precious materials inside our planet to things floating around in space.

Now tell me that wouldn't be a major benefit to us.
