MALKY SET FOR TRANSFER CASH BOOST

Tue Jun 05, 2012 7:37 am

Malky Mackay's transfer kitty is set to be boosted at a Cardiff City board meeting where a possible shirt rebrand from blue to red will be discussed.

The Bluebirds boss had been favourite to suuceed Paul Lambert as manager of Premier League Norwich City but Mackay ruled himself out on Monday.

Cardiff's owners will also finalise the extent of their further investment at the meeting that starts on Tuesday.

New capital from the club's Malaysian owners is expected to be "signed off".

"There's a budget in place for new players to secure the next stage in the club's development," Cardiff chief executive Alan Whiteley told BBC Sport.

"And that's been signed off and will be part of the new investment."

Cardiff's Malaysian owners had indicated they would be ready to invest a total of £100m into the Welsh club if the Bluebirds change their shirt colours from blue for red and rebrand the club crest so it would have made the Championship club more appealing in the Far East.

Some Cardiff fans initially reacted angrily to the proposed change of club colours and it was feared the protest jeopardised investment plans by principal backer Tan Sri Vincent Tan, who had planned the multi-million pound rebrand.

Club chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee later revealed that controversial proposal had been dropped due to "vociferous opposition " and he reassured the ongoing commitment of the Malaysian investors.

But he warned that the Bluebirds could not afford to continue losing money, which is a reported £1m a month, and that their investment strategy said to be worth £100m would be reassessed.

And in an open letter to fans after the club's last board meeting, Tien Ghee warned that the club must change while he also suggested a full review of the club's finances.

Now the change of shirt colour is back on the agenda and will be debated at this week's board meeting as Cardiff fans have started to cool on their rebrand opposition because of the scale of the proposed investment by the club's Asian owners.

The board meeting will clarify the exact scale of the further investment by Cardiff's owners, who have already invested about £40m since Tien Ghee first represented the Malaysian investors on the Cardiff board in November 2009.

Vincent Tan's Cardiff vision included upgrading the club's training ground, expanding the 26,500-capacity Cardiff City Stadium and paying off their long-time debt to Langston, owned by former owner Sam Hammam.

Whiteley put the proposed £100m investment by the Malaysian owners "into context".

"They have put a significant amount of investment into the club altogether," he said.

"When we outlined the plans of some of the things they are looking to do, if you started to add all of those up - including plans for a new training ground, plans for stadium expansion, trying to deal with the Langston position and put into place money for a new squad - then the number in total, including their existing investment, was coming up to those sort of levels.

"There was never the case that there was £100m for players."

Whiteley is "keen" for Cardiff to reveal their plans "for better or for worse" and he hopes the club will do that "during the course of this week".

Thought the topic of the colour change was put to bed. I was hoping for good news without having to change colour of our shirts!

Fantastic news. For me it not all about spending big in the transfer market. It's about getting the debts clear. First priority is Cardiff city's future. Forget colours, badges and premier league lets just get the debt clear. and kick on. We have a fantastic manager we can go forward with. What a difference 24 hours makes. my last post was very negative.

I'm fed up of disagreements. We all have to be united now. We pay/support the same cause. Cardiff city FC. We all felt the same pain over the years. We should be stronger now more than ever. The first priority of the club is the future and I think only priority now. Hopefully we will be sufferers no more.

I hope the colour stays Blue and the badge remains as it is, as TG has already said it would but before we make any assumptions WMD should wait for the announcement, Malky is obviously happy with what he has been told what is happening.

We can settle the debts and secure the future without changing colour but let's wait for an announcement before we worry about what will happen.

The Malaysians assured us in writing that that we will be playing in blue for the forthcoming season and that we would keep our bluebirds badge. Being so called honourable men, I would expect them to abide by this statement. :ayatollah:

Did they commit to no badge change? Also remember they hold the purse strings we are just customers free to shop elsewhere.

Yes they agreed to keep the bluebird. And no we are not free to shop elsewhere. Most paying customers have consumer rights in this country. :ayatollah:

But Langston has not been paid of so the so called investment is Imaterial. But the debt i suppose would just shift over to the Malaysians at a guess. So if they ever pull out we will owe them !! Is that right?

The did not commit to the same badge, it could still be the dragon but with a small bluebird somewhere.

In respects to customers shopping elsewhere, I meant from this point forward. Those with ST's wanting a refund have the rights you mention, obviously.

No.

IF its INVESTMENT then it will be in the form of shares, therefore paying off debts we owe (mainly to them). Hopefully also some new cash for stadium work, players etc..

That would be a lot of potential refunds as we have sold (I think) 16000 thus far.

I think most of us are repeating ourselves, but I think the current badge needs updating. I would like a retro 70's bluebird and drop the daf and dragon (in this form)

But this doesn't sound promising.

I've hardly cooled to the idea

Adapt or die.

Don't believe that. The Malaysians statement confirmed that the proposed changes were not going ahead. Unless they are liars of course, in which case I can see there being uproar again.

How is changing your colours, for no reason that makes sense, adapting?

I don't want to be bullied by someone just because they have money.

If we're spending too much money, then stop spending money we don't have.
The debt has grown dramatically recently and that's due to bad management, and the board are looking for an easy escape.

This is really good news, especially about Malky staying. He must have been told something positive about our future, investment etc .
About the blue/red debate , we will be playing in blue next season ( but maybe not all our home games), we will always be the bluebirds , we will have a bluebird on our badge (somewhere) every away game we will be in blue except where there is a colour clash . If this will save our club then so be it. Also I would think we will be in red in all our pre season friendly's especially against Newcastle.

I'm completely for the rebranding and will be ecstatic if it goes ahead.

I think the majority of fans are definitely in either that camp, or the camp that says for the greater good, we will accept it.

----

I always have liked the idea of the change to red - even when it was canvassed by Sam over 10 years ago, and the dragon was the centrepiece of the badge we wore on the most important day in our history, so it would be great to see that as the main part of our badge again.

I would however want to retain the bluebird in some way on the kit, as I do think that is important as well.

I've always liked the idea of the dragon holding up a flag with a bluebird on it - that would be tremendous. :ayatollah:
