Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay linked with Norwich City job

May 31 2012

CARDIFF City manager Malky Mackay has been installed as favourite to succeed Paul Lambert as Norwich City boss if the Carrow Road chief leaves for Aston Villa.

Repair your Bad Credit - Apply to Vanquis
Lambert has offered his resignation at the Canaries and looks set to join Villa despite Norwich chiefs initially rejecting his request to leave.

And that chain of events has seen bookmaker William Hill today make Mackay their 3/1 favourite to take over at the Premier League club.

Mackay has strong connections with Norwich City, having spent six seasons playing for the Canaries. He also helped Norwich clinch the Championship title and promotion in 2003-04.

Bluebirds fans' favourite Mackay only recently signed an extension to his Cardiff contract until 2016 after guiding the team to the Carling Cup final.

The Norwich speculation comes even though Mackay is unlikely to know Canaries chief executive David McNally well. It was McNally who appointed Lambert manager at Norwich in 2009, having worked with him during four years at Celtic.

Mackay had already moved on from Celtic when McNally was appointed sales and marketing director at the Scottish Premier League club, while the two men were not with Norwich at the same time.

But some Norwich fans have already talked on social media websites about Mackay being the ideal replacement.

Lambert has been one of the most sucessful Norwich managers for a long time, taking the club from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons. They finished 12th in the Premier League last season.

McNally has been clear on his view, saying: "We would not welcome any enquiry for our football manager or any of the club’s football players. We’ll do everything we can and fight this as hard as we’ve ever fought.”

Other candidates high in the Norwich betting include Birmingham boss Chris Hughton, former West Ham manager Alan Curbishley and Brighton chief Gus Poyet.

A Norwich statement read: "The Club regrets to confirm that Paul Lambert has offered his resignation from his position as Norwich City Manager.

"We have fought hard to keep Paul at Norwich City and have not accepted his resignation whilst discussions with another club are taking place.

"However, whatever happens, we want to place on record our sincere gratitude for everything Paul has done for the Club over the last three fantastic seasons.

"When Paul joined us in August 2009 we were in 66th position in the English football pyramid and the Club was on the brink of financial meltdown.

"Today we are a Barclays Premier League football club, on a financially sound footing and with a stadium full to capacity.

"Discussions with Paul throughout the last few days have been professional and amicable. Paul has already earned his place in Norwich City Football Club history and, no matter what happens, will always have a friendly welcome at Carrow Road.

"Meanwhile, contrary to some media speculation, the Club does not need to sell any players and the finances are in place to substantially strengthen the excellent squad which helped us finish in 12th position in the Premier League last season.

"Rest assured that everyone behind the scenes at Carrow Road remains absolutely focused on continuing to help the Club progress."

Remember Martin O'Neil was hot fav for weeks for the Cardiff job.

I can understand why he is fav but I'd bet Norwich haven't even drawn up a list yet.
He has a 5 year deal so we have a right for good comp.

Of all the people our fans have listed I haven't seen one come close to MM that we could get.

Luke I honestly believe Malky is going NO where. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Interesting. We'll have to see what happens. Personally, I hope that Malky stays, but the fiasco over the last couple of weeks can't have helped. Plenty of people on this forum seemed to want him out as the season dragged on to its conclusion. Could this be a get out of jail card for us?

My gut feeling says no as well Annis but we have seen enough football to know anything can happen.

From MM press releases he seems happy with Cardiff and the set up here.

Norwich seems a bigger job but it can change so quickly.

Of course he is. Do you honestly expect loyalty in football these days especially when the opportunity is there to manage in the biggest league in the world, at a club you've an affiliation to?

For what it's worth mind, I don't think Norwich will approach for him as he's simply not good enough.

You speak from experience, different clubs.

When was the last time a manager left CCFC without being sacked??? Anyone?

Norwich are two good years ahead of Cardiff.

But in two years everything could change. We could find ourselves ready for the second year of premiership football and Norwich relegated to league 1.

Or Norwich could be in Europe and we could be in league 2.

It's all impossible to judge on things like that.

Personally I felt that Norwich were beginning to show signs of second season syndrome already by the end of last season. i;d expect them to struggle next year whoever's in charge,

Quite happy with Graeme Jones if he takes the job thanks. A typical Huw Jenkins managerial appointment of a young ambitious manager with something to prove.

His record of appointing managers is second to none.

I always feel it's a risk giving someone his first managerial job in the prem. the stakes are so high and if he gets you relegated through inexperience that may dent his confidence.

Took us to a higher position than Martinez. Every manager appointed since, and including Flynn have left with us in a higher position than when they arrived.

you seriously cannot be happy with wigans assistant manager, and you claim malky mckay is not good enough for the premiership
a jack season ticket holder I know actually suggested AVB with a straight face
definetly a typical huw appointment if you were a league one side still

Any appointment is a risk. Jones knows the club and will continue to implement the same style of play. I trust the judgement of the board who know him on a personal and professional level.

Someone really is bitter. What utter nonsense. You know nothing about MM, how he works or what he had to work with. Are there any bounds to your arrogance?

Remember Alan Curtis playing for us in the late 80s. He had a chapter called 'Bluebird' in his autobiography. He was a great player, and very popular here. His first loyalty is obviously to Swansea, but he's a top bloke. Somehow I could not imagine him following the rest of them to Anfield.
