Why did Cardiff City play at home in all white,

During the 1959/60 season?

Re: Why did Cardiff City play at home in all white,

Because the floodlights had failed and it was easier for them to see each other? :)

Re: Why did Cardiff City play at home in all white,

Because the delivery guy got Cardiff and Swansea confused.

No idea but it would make one hell of a quiz question ;)

Other than that surely 1948 is the man to ask?

:D The floodlights were erected ready for the 60/61 season.

I would just like an historical answer. Surely some one knows the reason/answer? Would we be happy for City to play in all white now? Let alone red!

I seem to remember promotion from the second tier that season so maybe we should change to white? I feel ashamed to be honest that I do not know the answer, I can't remember them playing white at all. :old:

Derek Tapscott would know but he died in 2008 so I can't ask him :old:

This shirt was our away strip during 1960 and I'd guess that we must have played a cup match at home, which should have been an away game and our opponents agreed to a switch of venue, as long as they played in their home strip, which must have also been white? :)

Good try, but what i really want to know is why we really played in white that season. No body seems to know,, even thoughs that claim to support Cardiff City from the 1940's...

Like I said I have no recollection of us playing in white that season, i'l ask around though and make sure I log on to post you what I find out.

The Welsh flag was given official status in 1959, maybe there is a tenuous connection between the two? :old: :old: :old:

Hang on, is this supposed to be a quiz, which you don't know the answer to, or do you know the answer and you're making it extra difficult for us fans, who were too young to know the answer? :)

During the 59-60 season we played in all white in the home game against Aston Villa. This was the biggest game of that season being a promotion decider for us against the other team likely to be promoted. As such the game was recorded for television - then a grainy black and white format which would not distinguish City's Blue from Villa's Claret. It was for this reason that City played in white although it was probably a very late decision - certainly the programme for that game has City listed as playing in Blue. It was also a dull dreary day so the TV company possibly made a a late request and only City would have had access to their alternative kit.

Re: Why did Cardiff City play at home in all white,

SOME HISTORY: All at Cardiff City hope this white away shirt can emulate the team of 1960 and gain promotion to the top flight. The adoption of white shirts as our alternative away strip for the 2011/12 season is not new in the Club's history. In several seasons during the 1950s, when City were in the original First Division (1952-57), white was the colour when City had to change if the home side wore blue.

Prior to the 1950s, the Bluebirds had worn red as their alternative colours as was again the case at the end of the 1950s. This time it will be white shirts with blue shorts - in the 1950s it was white shirts with black shorts, and older City fans who were following the Club in those years will recall the pre-season public-practice matches "Blues" against "Whites".

A Bluebirds win at Chelsea? - it happened in November 1952, in January 1957, in September 1962, and in all three games we wore white shirts. In the 1959/60 season, we wore all-white as our alternative away strip in what was a promotion year. In fact we wore that strip for two home games - the promotion-clinching 1-0 win against Aston Villa on April 16th 1960 when Graham Moore scored the all-important goal, and in the following home match against Plymouth three days later.

Re: Why did Cardiff City play at home in all white,

the answer is...

They didn't play in white during the promotion winning season of '59.

They had Blue shirts and white trim, White shorts and socks with blue trim.

The away was the reverse. White shirt with blue trim.

I know this because my dad was in that team.

Steve Gammon.

Like I said this all makes sense as I had no recollection of my beloved Bluebird playing an entire season in red, it appears the man who started this topic was very much mistaken and needs to read up on his bluebird history.

Thank you. I knew this was the only game played at home in white that season,, i just wanted to know how many other people knew. ;) Just out of interest, why was white described as our "lucky" Kit then?

Stephen George Gammon (born 24 September 1939 in Swansea) is former a Welsh professional footballer. A Welsh under-23 international, Gammon's spent seven years with Cardiff City before a broken leg ended his professional career in 1965.
Career

Gammon began his career at Cardiff City, after being spotted playing for Mumbles Boys Club at the age of sixteen. He was handed a professional contract on his seventeenth birthday, making his debut, alongside fellow debutant Derek Tapscott, soon after in a 4–1 victory over Grimsby Town in September 1958 and his performances earned him a call up to the Wales under-23 side. The following season he scored his first, and only, goal for Cardiff in a 4–4 draw with Stoke City and helped the club gain promotion to Division One.
In February 1961, he suffered a major fracture in his leg after colliding with Denis Law during a league match against Manchester City.[1] He attempted several comebacks after the injury but broke the same leg twice in the following three seasons and subsequently dropped out of professional football, joining Southern Football League side Kettering Town where he took over as manager of the side three months after his arrival.[2] Gammon went on to make over 300 appearances in all competitions for Kettering.[3] He left the club in December 1971, stepping down as manager after six years at Rockingham Road, being replaced by Ron Atkinson.[4]
