Bluebirds chase Burnley hotshot Jay Rodriguez
by Paul Abbandonato, Western MailMay 24 2012

CARDIFF CITY are ready to smash the Welsh transfer record in a bid to sign Burnley hotshot Jay Rodriguez.

Netflix Free Trial
Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay has pinpointed the England Under-21 cap as the man to fire the goals to send Wales’ capital city club into the Premier League next season.

Impeccable sources tell us Mackay is preparing a £5.5m offer for Rodriguez.

If successful, that figure would eclipse the previous best transfer fee of £4m paid out by the Bluebirds to Newcastle to re-sign Michael Chopra from Sunderland.

Swansea’s record signing is Danny Graham, bought from Watford for £3.5m, but there is talk they are ready to double that figure with a £7m bid to bring Gylfi Sigurdsson to the Liberty Stadium on a permanent basis from Hoffenheim.

Mackay, we are told, believes Rodriguez is amongst the best players outside the Premier League and has coveted his signature for some time.

Cardiff’s Malaysian owners were ready to give their manager a huge transfer war-chest as part of their planned £100m investment in the club, provided their rebranding proposals went through.

The club’s British-based directors are still waiting to hear what the Malaysians intend to do next, following resistance from some fans about the team colours changing from blue to red.

However, club insiders believe the rebranding could still take place and news of Mackay’s planned big-money bid for Rodriguez will fuel the speculation further.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan netted in excess of £84m when the shares of Facebook, in which he has a substantial investment, were floated on the New York stock market last week.

Mackay has made Rodriguez his number one close-season target as he seeks the goal power which would turn the Bluebirds from play-off candidates to genuine automatic promotion material.

Cardiff are just one of a host of clubs chasing Rodriguez’s signature with Everton, Fulham, Southampton, Newcastle, Norwich and Reading each also reported to have been tracking him.

Burnley are said to want £8m for the 22-year-old, who top-scored in the season just gone when he netted 21 goals. In doing so, Rodriguez was named by his peers in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, picked up front next to Southampton’s Ricky Lambert.

If Cardiff were successful with the move, it would be the club’s biggest capture since Craig Bellamy joined on loan from Manchester City the season before last.

Although still young, Rodriguez is fast making a name for himself in the game. As well as top-scoring for Burnley in 2011-12, he was also the club’s leading goal ace the previous season with 15 goals.

His form attracted the interest of England Under-21s manager Stuart Pearce, who handed Rodriguez his England debut in a friendly against Italy under-21s.

Meanwhile, Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall has spoken for the first time about putting pen to paper on a new deal for the Bluebirds, saying it was an easy decision for him.

The 27-year-old Scot has signed for another three years, telling cardiffcity.co.uk: “I was more than happy to sign and the process has been quite straight-forward from start to finish.

“It was an easy decision for me to extend my deal here. I hadn’t even brought up the prospect of extending at this stage with anyone, but Malky Mackay told me I was part of his plans.

“The gaffer was a big part of my decision to remain here. He gave me the chance to get back fit and prove myself back last summer and I appreciated that. I want to be able to repay him on the pitch and kick on again.

“It was a hard season which ultimately ended disappointingly at West Ham, but I think we put in a great effort on the back of so much change 12 months ago and by the time August 18 comes around we’ll be ready to go again.

“Hopefully a few new faces will come in as well to freshen things up as is often the case and the new season will come around quickly as always.”

We are going to make a bid, but! with all the premiership teams in for him there will be little chance of signing him, but! again Fulham had a bid of £5m turned down in January so we will offer £500k more, don't be surprised if we outbid the premiereship clubs as they will not pay much more then the £5.5m so if VT wants him then he will get him

The January prices are always inflated and Jay is now in the last year of his contract so the price Could reduce further.

However just like Sordell we will prompt the market and then lose out. It's great that we set our sights so high but if they always fail because of the profile of the player, why arent we looking at signings with a higher chance of success.

Because your owners have no intention of spending any real money?

Ah well, another free transfer from Wycombe Wanderers it is.

He's obviously a good striker but not worth that type of money. Myself I'd rather us look at getting both Nathan Tyson and Troy Deeney, both of whom impressed me when they played against us this season. :ayatollah:

With 21 goals last season sounds great, But yes there is always a But ! 5mil is alot for us and I just hope he can do the same here should he come to us. The But is ,that he got them 21 goals as the way Burnley play must suite his style of play. So many times we have seen strikers with lots of goals in there bag, only to move to another club and they dont even get half the goals they did with there other club. I just hope this guy suite our style of play, and I hope Malky makes sure this season that we keep and pass the ball around. We did well last at the start of last season , all the players even Whitts were goig in for the ball and we always had a man near to pass it off to. Then as quick as it started it all stoped . Whitts would only run up to a guy without going in for the ball, and as for going in for a header well you can forget that Whitts never does that.

I just hope that Malky does his best to get us players that are going to work off each other and for each other. I think we are all hoping for a special season ahead. :ayatollah:

He would fit in though wouldn't he.

Surely he'd be better than Joe f*cking Mason, what a f*cking joke of a player.

Hope Malky has a plan B, C D E and F on his striker shortlist for when Rodriguez signs for a Prem team, If we had done that in Jan when phillips, Noone and Sordell turned us down, we might be in the Prem now. Also don't blow the budget on 1 or 2 players Malky, spread it out a bit on 5 or 6 players methinks. And I would love Bellars back I really would, but again not if it eats too much into the budget.

Its all bollocks, even if we did put a £5.5million bid. We know full well that he'd go to a prem club, another smoke screen and propaganda by our club to boost profile and season ticket sales.

Why do these people insist on treating us like idiots, it makes my blood boil.

The fact that Burnley are price-tagging him as £8m and a few Premier League clubs are after him, I really can't see us getting him.

Another Matt Phillips i think. A smoke screen to keep the fans happy like they did in January and spend fook all. If they don't want to spend large amounts that is OK with me cut cloth and all that, but tell us the truth don't bull shit us. I wont believe any transfer until i see them with a City shirt on and saying i am glad i am here the Club showing ambition and the Fans are outstanding blah blah blah

I don't give a toss what Swansea do and I don't need tossers like you coming on here to give me an update. The moderators should get you slung off of here. Look above its a Cardiff City forum.

If just a fraction of that £5m had been spent on a decent striker's wages in march (Bothroyd?) we would be in the prem now.
