Exclusive: Malaysia tycoon plans IPO of football club Cardiff City -
May 24, 2013.

By Yantoultra Ngui

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian billionaire Vincent Tan is exploring an IPO of U.K football team Cardiff City for as early as this year, people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, in a deal that would follow the team's recent promotion to the Premier League.

A listing for the Welsh team would follow Manchester United's debut on the New York Stock Exchange last year, which raised $233.2 million (154.4 million pounds) in the largest sports team IPO ever.

The process is in its early stages, the people said, with details on the timing, size and listing venue subject to change.

Tan, who owns 36.1 percent of the club and is the former chairman of conglomerate Berjaya Group, has engaged at least one investment bank to lead the process, according to the people.

The initial plan is to list the club on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, one of the people said. The deal may be completed as early as this year, another person said.

Tan was unavailable for comment. He is Malaysia's tenth richest person with a net worth of $1.3 billion, according to Forbes.

Malaysia's IPO market, normally among Asia's quietest, sprung to life last year with several multi-billion dollar listings, lifting the Kuala Lumpur exchange to rank No. 4 globally for new listing proceeds.

PROMOTION

Cardiff City were promoted to the English Premier League last month after a 51-year absence.

Its recent fortunes run counter to another team owned by a Malaysian. Tony Fernandes, chief executive of Malaysia's Air Asia, saw his Queens Park Rangers relegated from the Premier League in what he called a "tragic" season.

Promotion to the Premier League is estimated to be worth at least 120 million pounds ($181 million) to clubs over the next five years because of access to a share of lucrative television rights deals.

Cardiff were on the brink of administration and escaped a winding-up petition at the High Court in 2010 after settling a 1.9 million pound tax bill.

Tan has sought to increase the club's marketability, especially in Asia, although his decision to change their traditional blue kit to red sparked controversy. Nicknamed the Bluebirds, having played in blue for over 100 years, Cardiff now have a red badge featuring a dragon.

Although revenues will rise, clubs like Cardiff will need to invest heavily in new players to ensure that they are competitive in the Premier League.

Whether I am believed does not matter in truth but that has been the intention of Vincent Tan for quite some time.

Sorry no disrespect intended but its not rocket science that things would progress that way. Man Utd already is and there could also be others who are also floated on those markets.

Carl, I've laways respected your views on virtually all things City, and I am genuinelly interested in what you think of the current position.

I know you've indicated you are not in favour of the changes, and I can fully understand that - its a fair and sensible position for many people to take, as long as its kept on a sensible footing without too much rage presented against the Malaysians.

I take a different view and can really see these changes making us massive on the world stage.

However, a sensible and balanced disagreement is one thing, but the extent of the anti Malaysian feeling that has been in evidence on both boards over the last 2 days could (it if continues and gets worse) alienate the Malaysians to such an extent that they really do leave the club, and I really do fear that could mean extinction for the club.

Even though you're against the changes, do you think there is a genuine chance this could happen? This seems to be the logical end situation that could be deduced from what Steve Borley is saying?

Or do you think there is no chance that this could actually happen?

These are genuine questions, as I am very worried about where this could end.

I've just being looking very closely at the exchanges on twitter with Steve Borley, and there's clearly an indication there (perhaps between the lines) that that could be a possibility, or at least that's my interpretation of what he was saying.

You obviously feel though that this would definitely not happen though, which encourages me, as that really would be a doomsday scenario, I fear.

If you look at some of the work the big management consultants have been doing, you can work out some of the other lunatic plans these owners have. Many of the parasites buying our clubs are American, so that gives a clue. But Asians are part of the same mindset.
The path is simple. We won't be the Bluebirds, a football club, or anything remotely related to what we have all created over the past 100 years.

Its like marrying Jessica Alba. Then she gets anti-sex.Then she starts wearing weird clothes, then gets made up as a Goth. Then has short hair. Then gets fat and dresses like a bloke. And finally has a sex change and grows a cock.

Most of us would have the sense to say no.

I don't understand what people are expecting this to achieve.

man united floated on the Asian stock exchange and had to slash the price of shares just to keep some interest, I think they made about £6m all in all. If Man United can only get moderate interest then what the hell are we going to get?

Only three days ago was a notable poster telling me that VT was 'clueless' and 'had no plan'.

I told him that someone like him would always have a plan to make money - and here we go, this is the first step.

This is a quote from the BBC article on it today:-

Champions Manchester United raised $233.2m (£150m) in the largest sports team IPO ever when they were listed on the New York Stock Exchange in August.

If by 'people' you mean 'fans' then the expectation is that enough money is raised to pay off debts to Langston and Tan himself.

I have no idea if we could raise as much as £100m (the assumed total amount of debt) but at the very least we might raise enough to pay off Langston (£15-24m)?

Our debt situation has to be addressed and even though it does feel a bit like selling the family silver (a quote from the 1980's) it does show that VT does have some kind of plan.

How many fans we have is irrelevant. Its businessmen that will be purchasing shares, we are a small fish with plenty of room to grow. Share price can only increase the bigger we get. So itts more of an investment with a bigger yield than purchasing Man U shares as they cant grow much more.

Vincent Tan is far from 'clueless' so the 'notable poster' is may be not so 'notable'

You can't learn everything from Googling but it is possible to get an insight. You don't have to gig too far to find out that buying failing companies turning them around and then floating them on Far Eastern stock markets is a well worn (& lucrative) path walked by VT on many previous occasions.

And hes made himself a billionaire, so its fair to say he knows what hes doing. In business terms.

Not sure about the Man U comment as I'm sure they will continue to grow.

However, I think you overall point about things being relative is a good one. We have always known it was VT's plan to make Cardiff City Malaysia's team in the EPL. So it make sense to float us in KL and as we become bigger and better know our growth will race ahead quicker than the more established Premiership teams.

I'm scratching the bowls of my memory now but wasn't there a creation of millions of unissued shares when VT came on board in 2010?

It would seem obvious to me that these shares would be sold first before any full scale floatation.

With the Man U comment, I mean we have more room to grow than them. So our share price can rise a lot faster than theirs if we are successful meaning big and quick profits for share purchasers. Man U are already there we are miles behind.

I thought something like this was in the pipeline when a new advertising banner "RHB" went up in the stadium after the New Year.

RHB or Rashid Hussien Bank is one of the top merchant / investment banks in Malaysia so why would they pay for an advertisement in the CCS, especially one which is next to the scoreboard and out of the direct line of TV cameras. :?

Another step in the VT masterplan for CCFC and with his track record who can say he won't make a success of it.
