Interesting (Birmingham fans)

May have been posted on here before, if so I apologise, Birmingham City fans opinion on the Carling Cup vs Relegation

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9674999.stm

From Palace fan, via text: "Re 1901. Would a Premier League team choose relegation and a Carling Cup victory over another season at the top of English football?

I guess we should ask Birmingham City fans that!?!

danm6038 on Twitter: "Re 1942. As a Blues fan that Wembley day is one never to forget. Definitely wouldn't give it up for another year in the Prem!"

From Sophie in Leeds, via text: "As a Birmingham fan, I can confirm that the answer is yes - winning a trophy is much better than being 17th in the Prem. Europa league is fun, too!"

ThomasStenson on Twitter: "Birmingham City season ticket holder for last 11 years, would 100% win the carling cup and go down then win nothing and stay up."

1950: A fairly resounding reaction then (there were more than just those three replies I've included below) from Birmingham fans who would choose winning the Carling Cup over staying in the Premier League. I recall several Portsmouth fans said the same about their FA Cup victory too.

History remembers winners, not who came 14th in the Premiership. I'd love to be 14th/15th/16th in the premiership but I want to win something more. Not expecting to win but once you do, no one can take it away from you. :ayatollah:

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

Just found it interesting that they weren't too bothered about not being in the Premier league, and that the cup win meant far more to them. After what I've seen of the Premier league this season I can sort of understand. I bet the Birmingham fans are also enjoying this season in the Championship far more than the constant grind of the Prem.

It was brilliant getting to the Premier league last season, but being in it is strange after years of trying to get there, in all honesty it's a bit of a let down. And as one of them mentioned, after years of pushing at the top of the other leagues, aiming for 17th place feels weird.

exactly, winning the carling cup and getting into europe is much better then getting to the prem and winning nothing. :ayatollah:

As it stands we're sitting pretty in the fair play standings at the moment, if the Premier league gets into one of the top 3 places you never know.

 I can see it now, both Swans and Cardiff fans getting all excited about Europe, passports and sunglasses at the ready and we'll end up drawing each other :banghead:

The first ever bubble trip in the Europa league

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

They all come from the group of teams who've been there and done it as well though. So in a sense they had the best of both worlds. A lot of the premiership involves playing the likes of Stoke, Wigan, Wolves, Blackburn, West Brom, Norwich, QPR etc, it's not all about the big teams but it must be enjoyable to be guaranteed playing the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, etc twice a year.

As said though in twenty years time the prime pages of the facts and figures books will show premiership winners, fa cup winners and league cup winners.

will you be sitting in the stands crying if you lose on sunday , will you f**k but loads of you were after playoffs , just keep telling yourself its more important than the prem you might eventually believe it

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

It is a poser that one. We want prem football but know what a grind it will be to stay there and we also know that cup games will be sacrificed to achieve safety. So little relief from the heartache of constant league woes. Most teams outside the top 6 or 7 will pick up some good scalps during the season, but it is the results against the rest that matter and they are all of a very similar standard.
I would give anything for promotion and tell my self that 1 season in the top flight would be great. But I know all too well what relegation battles are like and the numb feeling you get when you get the drop.

Don't get me wrong, there are many positives, and for my 12 year old lad, the Premier league is the best thing ever, but in my 28 years of watching the Swans, the Prem has left me a little bit disappointed. As I said, many, many positives, but I can see where the Birmingham fans are coming from. That said, I wouldn't swap our win against Reading for anything, what a day!

im blues.last season i would have said the prem is more important.that was prior to the day.the day though was 50x better than my wildest dreams.so if you ask me now then it would be the cup.cardiff aint going to drop out a league though they may not go up.not so much to lose as us but when/if you pick that pot up on sunday it will all make sense.lots of blues openly said glory over survival.on the plus side relegation got us chris hughton and a team to be proud of.im more proud of these guys than the ccwinning team.your a good egg scotsjock.great thread

the prem is the league to want to get into but the better craic is the np.i hadn,t been away for 5yr till chriss hughton took over.been away 4x this year.loved it

Ive heard quite a few fans of QPR say the same thing about the prem being not what its cracked up to be,For me supporting Cardiff is all about enjoyment and supporting the team through good times and bad,id love to see Cardiff play in the premiership but enjoy the trips to Peterborough and Ipswich as much as I would Chelsea and Manchester

correct on every level.this mb is a very good and fair one.it should be kept that way

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

There is no simple answer to this.

Football is all about the trophies and IF we win, and lets be fair its a massive IF. That trophy win will be ours forever. Just like the FA Cup. Nobody is interested in the 10-12 years we spent at the top level, but everyone knows we won the cup. So on that level it is.

On the other hand promotion will give the club week in week out top level football, but then maybe only for a season or 2. Could we guarantee we'd be competitive. It will also bring a huge amount of income into the club and a stadium extension up to around 32000, (read Maly today) -thats a big deal. The parachute payments, ridiculous that they are also mean that shuld we go down there is a good chance of getting back up again and it coud give us the much needed financial stability - although VT and TG seem to have given us that to a degree anyway.

By the way this isn't a comparison with the Jacks, much a sit hurts to say so far they have done superbly, but from me as a City fan I'd choose the Cup win first. After we lose on Sunday though we can go back to trying to go up.

By the way scotsjack seems a top guy, giving a well rounded opinion, much like a fair few of the Jacks who post on CCMB. The rest of the berks could do well to lose the chips and take a leaf out of his book.

Can't believe how wound up (t)waddle is getting over us having outr own opinion.

Being honest i would take premiership footy over the carling cup any day of the week, you would be daft not to in my opinion.

Why has it got to be one or the other though? i want both

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

Fri Feb 24, 2012 6:48 pm

i think if your aspiring to get to the prem/stay in for the first time its the prem.blues main aim under mcliesh was always survival.the cup broke up a dreary season league wise.this year for us id say prem over cups as we need to get the pot of gold to stave of money worries

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

Fri Feb 24, 2012 6:53 pm

If it was just about winning the league cup i'd take promotion every time but the lure of europe changes everything.
For 20 years it has been my dream to watch cardiff in europe (i was just too young last time).
I dont think we'll win sunday but if we do win, beating liverpool in a final and going to europe would beat anything the premier league could offer

out of interest how many swans fans do you know who could not afford season tickets but followed the swans home and away over the last 10 years but now cant get a sniff of a ticket for any home games.
trust me i know of a few in that position and unfortunately thats what the premiership brings to all clubs and its what it would bring to us as well.
i can understand scots jacks point of view and it would probably take about 3 seasons before the novelty of aiming for 17th place wore off.

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

I think we have been spoilt tbh. Most of us have never seen the club win a major trophy

- the biggest prob the league 1 play off final.

Id take the cup over promotion without a doubt

Couldn't agree more.
Win or lose it will be another fantastic day for our great club and it's all about great days and memories, otherwise what's the point.

Re: Interesting (Birmingham fans)

Its a toughish topic!

We have been climbing the leagues and trying for many years to get as high as we can, and to find out whether CCFC is really that sleeping giant people talk about. In order to do so, the ultimate goal has to be promotion to the Premier League, and to pretty much all of us, its been the number 1 thing on our wanted list for a good few seasons now.

The Carling Cup would be a great thing for us to win, but for me I would swap it for a place in the Premier League in a heartbeat.

Saying that im going to really enjoy Sunday, we are so lucky to have now played in an FA Cup Semi, Final and Carling Cup Final at Wembley, nobody can take that away from us, no matter if we dont get promoted this season.
