" WHO REMEMBERS ? "

Thu Feb 02, 2012 4:05 pm

George Wood.

He's got no hair  :ayatollah:

He is 60 this year and was pushed out by Dave Jones when he was a goal keeping coach at the City.

He will be down the City on Saturday with his Wife.

Be brilliant if the Ninian and the Canton stand sang his name. :ayatollah:

I remember us losing by 6 goals away to Port Vale and we cheered and sang his name as he left the field, he loved the City fans. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Luke,
George was our goalie for a few yrs, then went on to management, then came back, but there was an argument over his son, thats very true.

George Wood IS A fantastic Character. One of only a few decent keepers We ever had, I Put a cracking header past Him, He gave Gibbo (Roger) a right ear bashing, Woody let Me know in no uncertain terms that if I so much as thought about going anywhere near His area again He could possibly get sent off, His face was a fek'''n picture when I put the ball right in the corner with a 25yarder, He gave Gibbo SO much GBH it was funny as fook, at 2-2 We were given a penalty virtually last kick of the game Fair play Woodie saved the pen but the ball came back in the D for yours truly I pelted the ball just hoping for the best tbh, It would have ended up by the corner flag until Gibbo decided to knee it in off the post, George steam coming out of each ear, I thought what the fook was he like in Pro football if He got like that in a charity game, Then I found out that someone had Changed Woodies pledge of Tenner a conceded goal to a hundred and the organisers were so pleased He didnt have the heart to tell Them the sheet had been tampered with, But Fare play to Him He still got a round in which was even more impressive because most of the jocks I know always seem to have a drink in Their hand but always have problems with bar navigation!!!!!

IIRC, it was more down to Hammam than Jones, Wood was berated as his son went to Man City on a pretty good deal we couldn't match. Version from someone close to Wood was Hammam went ballistic, claiming George was disloyal for wanting the best for his son. Was talk of an unfair dismissal case, not sure what happened to that.

Nerd,

I can not give you the whole email of Georges wife, but he is a quote from her in the email.

" George loved Cardiff City unfortunately his passion for the Club was not the same under DJ, it's
back now and we hope they will go up this season under Macky." " Dave Jones wanted him out, they have a bit of history and basically Dave Jones hated him. "

Sam was a mate of George's and had a lot of time for him, if you get to meet George ask him.

You've seen the whole email.

Jones was a disaster for us, in more ways than one.

It's particularly telling that he now basically unemployable. He'll probably turn up at Rotherham or Shrewsbury or somewhere.

I remember George Wood. Back in the late 80s, promotion year I think, we had some goalkeeping problems. Played about four during the season? Remember Alan Judge, who was pretty good, on loan from Oxford, I think. But George steadied the ship.

He's got no hair, but we don't care, Georgie, Georgie Wood ....

Unlike Jones to hate someone and hold a grudge....

Never forget that Wood lost his place in the team in 1990 ish. He was loaned to Blackpool and was eligible to play against us at Ninian Park. George got a great reception from the crowd and was man of match-think we drew 2all but his heroics cost us a few points.

I had a few pints with George in the Hollybush pub in Church Village after the famous FA cup win against Leeds, we had a right celebration, he was part of Alan Cork back room team then.
