CARDIFF City will make an improved bid for Brighton wide man Craig Noone before the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday.

But the Bluebirds are resigned to missing out on Blackpool winger Matt Phillips with the England Under-20 cap set to join Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers.

Cardiff had a £500,000 bid for the 24-year-old Noone rejected by Brighton earlier this month.

But the Echo understands City will return with a better offer in the hope of boosting manager Malky Mackay’s options on the flanks.


Mackay is keen to add to his squad with a twin-pronged assault on Championship and Carling Cup honours in the second half of the season. Noone signed for Brighton from Plymouth for £300,000 a year ago and has become a fans’ favourite on the South Coast thanks to his pace and ability to beat defenders.

The former Liverpool junior dropped into non-league football after leaving Anfield, playing for Skelmersdale, Burscough, Southport before Plymouth signed him in August 2008.

Belgian club Royal Antwerp, Sunderland and Wigan have all shown interest in Noone, who helped Brighton earn promotion from League One last season.

But Phillips, the subject of a £1m bid by the Bluebirds this week, looks unlikely to move to South Wales.

Wage demands have proved a stumbling block for a 20-year-old, who has scored seven goals in his last six games for Blackpool, including two hat-tricks, and Bolton are set to step in.

Phillips made 27 appearances for the Tangerines in the Premier League last season, having joined from Wycombe in a £325,000 deal in August 2010.

But Owen Coyle’s Bolton are ready to step in and sign Phillips before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday.

Why was he never coming? I didn't think it would happen as he's been linked and will probably join a bottom half prem club!

is this guy worth upping the bids...only say cos i havent see nmuch of him to be honest ...but i dont want the club chasing guys and upping the price when he may not be right ,saying that im sure with malky he fits his plan...be good to see any others as well.

im sure Malky would not show much intrest in craig noone if he was a bad player. Im sure he is a good player. He is a fan favourite and brighton he is pacey and strong to get past defenders, he is a winger and i think it will be a good buy for 950k, he certainly was good against liverpool in the carling cup and he is only a youngster!
