" THE MARK HUDSON DEBATE "

Tue Jan 03, 2012 9:47 pm

For some reason City fans seem to like to have a fall guy and despite his excellent performances in more than a few games this season and last year, sometimes it just ain't enough.

Personally I think Hudson is a very good defender but admit that he does make the odd mistake but he is definitely a trier.

What I would like to know is, the fact that Hudson is now able to talk to other clubs as his contract runs out this June and there has been no talk in the press of a renewed contract, do you believe that Hudson will be a City player next season?

He is obviously preferred over Gerrard, who has another year to run on his contract after this season (my mistake last week when I read elsewhere that he is out of contract in June and posted it on here), but will Malky go after another Centre Half in this transfer window?

I would say keep him but try and get his wages down but if there is no joy down that route, go and get a footballing centre half on lesser wages.

This is where the signing of someone like wes Morgan would make good sense. Hudson has been great this season and him and big Ben are looking like our best pairing since loovens and roger. But this is all the natural cycle of a football club. Hudson is getting on too.

Hudson is on approx. £14,000 a week thanks to the Riddler, Charlton a relegated team were only paying him £9,000 a week.

At first I thought Hudson struggled, he got better and as time has gone on he is worthy of his place. Still makes daft mistakes though.Would not give him a new contract though, at most 1 year.

Think he has been excellent this season, he does make the odd mistake but at a guess I would say he does a lot more defending than others, he won't shy away.

Will he stay? I think no.
If on 14k I'd expect him to drop at least 4k a week

Dave Jones and Malky both defenders pick him and make him captain over several other options.

That's all I need.

Re: " THE MARK HUDSON DEBATE "

He was an absolute calamity when he first signed for us. Remember when we beat Sheff United away 4-3 a few years ago?

Everytime he went near the ball, he cost us a goal.

He's come so far since then and is now a solid centre back.

I'd love to see him get his contract renewed, but what he is getting paid at the moment is crazy, he'll have to take a paycut to stay, although if we get promoted, he'd get torn apart in the Premier League.

Malky must think a lot of him to keep him as club captain I would like to see him stay on another year at the most maybe 2 but no more.

Totally agree with your comments mate .I thought he and Ben Turner were outstanding yesterday and Mark Hudson has been a rock in our defence this season.

I agree about his contract situation. Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast these days as regards contracts etc.

In terms of him as a player; I definitely think that he's one of the better centre-halves in the league, and that his partnership with Turner has gone from strength to strength. Excellent leader of the team in addition to being a very good organiser at the back, and he's been in great form for, more or less, the past year or so. He's not perfect, he will make mistakes, but if he was flawless he wouldn't be plying his trade with us.

Keep it going Sparky :ayatollah:

I've often thought about that. Who knows - we'll only know when we get there I guess!

Hudson and Turner, with Marshall behind them, have been our best defensive option for a good while. The full back positions look pretty good as well. Kev is out, and Darcy steps in. Naylor covered Taylor well.

When you say 'a footballing centre half', wo do you have in mind Carl? In the Championship, more often than not, we are going to get high balls hoofed into our box, like at Forest, or Pompey for that matter. That's what we have to worry about at the moment. If we got promoted, then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Poncing about cost us a goal yesterday !

Yesterday looked tricky on paper. Hunt and Church are two very good centre-forwards who will give you a pretty hard game when on form. Hunt especially can be a nasty piece of work, but he was rubbish yesterday; constantly moaning, so Turner and Hudson didn't need to be in top gear. Church on the other hand was OK; nothing special, but to be honest neither of them received too much support/service from their team-mates.

I do like Hudson if only he had a bit more speed about him, but even Big Ben Turner is great and he is not what I would call speedy. he has a job to catch a player if he gets infront of him, but both great I just wish I could hear them shouting more to each other and players around them. Our player should be more vocal with each other, But not in a nasty way :ayatollah:

Re: " THE MARK HUDSON DEBATE "

I would offer him a new contract and up to tne club what they pay I think he is one of ne better central defenders in th league and if you look at his record as captain I bet you will find he has one of the best records of any captain of city over the years Certainly in my time of watching city I'm 37 years

Re: " THE MARK HUDSON DEBATE "

i suppose it will depend on how we finish this season to determine whether he will stay or not...

Re: " THE MARK HUDSON DEBATE "

I want to know how long Marshall has got left on his contract, as well as Tom Heaton, these two need to have their contracts extended. Its not easy finding goalkeepers, as we have experienced this over the past few years since the loss of Neil Alexander.

Thus far, Heaton and Marshall have been on great form.

 In all seriousness, with regard to communication between the pair, I think that will improve with time. And as I've said previously, if Hudson had more pace on him, he'd probably be in the Premier League.

As regards Turner; well he is pretty close to a complete centre-half. Excellent in the air, pretty good on the ball, great 'tackler' (the way he twice scythed down and completely munched Marlon King the other day will forever stay with me  ) and a handy amount of pace too. I remember he kept up fairly comfortably with Kebe at one point in the second half yesterday before shepherding the ball out of play for a goal kick. And he's still very young. Exciting stuff! :ayatollah:

Very much agree. Two quality goalkeepers :ayatollah:

Hunt was rubbish because Turner had him in an iron grip. Hudson seemed to be up against Church more, but got in early on him and snuffed him out completely.

I'd like to keep Hudson AND Gerrard, of course the wages need to be sensible though.

Hudson has been excellent for us, the odd mistake, but no more than most centre halfs at this level, but he's brave and reads the game well. He's also well-respected by the rest of the players and is obviously a natural leader if you see how many top managers have made him their captain.

He's also only 29 -younger than many think and has a fair few decent years left.

IF we go up though we'd need better. So its a tough choice for Malky with both of them.

Agree about Hudson.
If we can get a fee for Gerrard in jan I'd sell him tho

I'd have to disagree, I would sell the likes of Parkin, Keinan, Gypepes and Taiwo.

At present, Gerrard is quite useful, especially if one of the centre backs get injured, same goes with Darcy, wouldnt want to sell him either. But end of the day, Malky knows who he wants, and I trust his judgement in the transfer market.

With those 4 its sadly a case of 'offload' rather than sell as none would command a fee.

As pointed out we wouldn't get a fee for any of them, maybe a minimal one for Keinan.

Gerrard is out of contract at the end of the season. If we can get a fee for him we may be able to get a replacement MM wants.

If you're being specific in terms of who was marking who, then yes, Tuner should be given the credit for nullifying him. Hudson did go in early on Church, and like you said it worked to good effect. He does that to quite a few strikers he comes up against though; he tends to prefer nicking the ball off them more than anything else.

I believe Gerrard's contract runs out next season.

But at present, I believe the key is to extending contracts with the likes of Kev, Heaton and Marshall.
