This Is England 88

Mon Dec 12, 2011 11:17 am

If you saw the film, This Is England, or the series, This Is England 86, then you'll know what to expect.

This Is England 88 is on Channel 4 this week at 10pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Absolutely brilliant television. Watch it and remember what telly used to be like before TOWIE, East Enders and all the rest of the crap that we are now drowning in.

Personally i think its a pile of poo!

The Scottish 'version' - 'Neds' - pisses all over it, yet they never bothered
to make it a series

I haven't seen Neds. I thought 86 was better than the film, mind. Much grittier.

Give it a go, you never know.

That scene where the bloke raped his own daughter. Very powerful. What C4 used to be known for, pushing the boundarys, before all the big brother crap.

Very true Polo.

VERY excited for it. Each time the advert comes on, I'm even more excited.

It was gritty, and just like true life for all of us. Except you lot are a bit more
keen on plunging people. Gangs from different estates kicking off, the remedial
class, loony teachers, shagging birds in the park, big brothers, violent Dads.
There's bits in there we can all relate to.

This Is England for me was a bunch of dickheads dressed as cowboys and Indians
with an air rifle. Though a couple of the scenes were quite graphic and chilling

Loved the film and the 86' series.

They need to make more!

Personally I think This Is England pisses all over NEDS. NEDS is just a wishy washy copycat type version. Shane Meadows is a fantastic filmaker, every project of his that I've seen has been mindblowing.
What I like about Shane Meadows is he gives the actors a lot of freedom, hardly any of it is scripted. And Vicky McClure deserves a bloody Oscar, fantastic actress.

Do you need to watch the film or '86 first before watching this? never got round to watching either, now I'm in the mood to watch 88 after seeing the adverts and hearing everyone talking about it

Probably best to watch 86 before 88, so you know the background, but not necessarily the film.

Well worth watching the lot, in my opinion.

Shane Meadows is one of the most underrated directors and story tellers currently on the scene, Dead Mans Shoes is one of my all time fav movies, T.I.E movies and tv series have been awesome but I haven't seen Neds so can't really compare..

Problem I had with Neds was although I was eager to see film when I heard about it I was troubled when I found out the Era it was set in 70s or 80s I think whilst the term NEDS and Chavs are recently introduced and not commonly used in those foregone era's.

Neds is quality.

TiE the film was good. The series never lived upto it, not holding much hope for this tonight. But anythings better than that TOWIE shite...

I was disappointed, as well, but the reviewers have said that the 2nd and 3rd parts are a lot different, so worth staying with.

Looks like the 1st part was just setting the scene.

Yes, very slow last night, can only get better.

Didnt seem like 1988 either, was more like early / mid 80's. They should be all raved up now not still donning punk haircuts and harrington jackets.

Should have left it at TIE 86.

Pointless waste of time 88.

A few really powerful scenes (Lol visiting Combo, Lol talking to the nurse, then her attempted suicide), but disappointing overall. 86 was by far the best one.

That aside, still one of the best things you'll see on telly this year. My favourite so far was Top Boy.
