" IS FOOTBALL LOSING ITS APPEAL AGAIN ? "

Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:51 pm

Last weekends total attendances were 430,474 Hmm
exactly the same corresponding weekend last season 544,717 :ayatollah:

Both had Sunday games as well.

Not good .

WITH ALL THESE NEW STADIUMS, I THOUGHT THE CROWDS WERE SUPPOSE TO BE INCREASING ?

Ipswich had their lowest crowds for 11 years last night, just one of many clubs lately.

Prices keep going up and wages and numbers actually working keeps going down.

to be fair annis that is just a small snippet of data and unfair to say as a whole attendances are dropping.

interesting read from last season

The Football League celebrated record attendances in the 2009-10 season. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian
Attendances in the Football League reached a 50-year high last season as more than 17m fans walked through the turnstiles.

The Championship kept its place as the league with the fourth-highest attendance in Europe with a total of more than 9.9m fans, up 0.3% to an average of 17,949 supporters per match. Only Germany's Bundesliga (13.1m), the Premier League (12.9m) and Spain's La Liga (11m) have higher attendances, and the Championship still outstrips Italy's Serie A (9.1m) and France's Ligue 1 (7.6m).

The Football League chairman, Greg Clarke, said: "Attracting more than 17m fans into their grounds is an outstanding achievement by Football League clubs, particularly in the current economic climate. Our clubs are focused on attracting a new, family audience to football and those efforts are clearly working."

A total of 17.1m supporters attended the 1,656 league matches played during 2009-10, up 4.4% on last season and the highest aggregate crowd figure since 1959/60.

The Football League gates have more than doubled during the last 25 years to an average of more than 10,000 in the three divisions outside the Premier League.

I think the appeal is there just not the money. Id be interested to know if SKY games viewers have gone up. I think people would rather watch it in the pub or at home now and save a bit of money.

To be honest if I didnt have a season ticket every year I wouldnt go to every home game, match day prices are just to high.

haha its just something i found, i thinks its a very good debate and i would not be surprised if come the end of the season we are down on attendances.

then again the media would only draw negative things like the raw fact you gave without looking into explinations.

personally i think it will be even higher this year....purely because

we have teams like birmingham west ham leeds and brighton in the league with high attendances and lost the likes of scunthorpe preston and SWANSEA

i was listening to talk sport and west hams prices are massive and very expensive even for away fans, obviously to accomdate the high wages. so i wonder is leicesters prices have gone up??

i think thats why the likes of southampton and brighton have started well because they have low wages from a lower division previously and so when they come up with greater income they have a lower wage bill to sign the right key players at the right price and still remain in budget :)

QPR started off the same way, over pricing.
I personally think football is well over priced.

it is well over priced, im always surprised when I get a ticket for my dad down CCS at the price. Or basically most away trips it is so expensive.

i think it is ...im not a big fan of the premiership as its just money driven...dont get me wrong if we got up id enjoy it and the money that it brings the club...but i hate all the diving ,playacting and everything about the top league,it gets even worse for the champions league...which is what sky are only interesed in...i love th championship as its so unpredictable and would rather watch a league 1 or 2 game as its like old school football and crappy grounds.....i love new grounds but the new football is becoming so far replaced from what a lot of us grew up on and some of todays players really think there above the average joe which i cant stand ....if it wasnt for us there,d be no them !!!

Re: " IS FOOTBALL LOSING ITS APPEAL AGAIN ? "

You have to consider the fixtures as well, what teams were home and what teams were away? If most of the big teams with big followings were away from home this weekend, that will obviously have an effect on the overall attendance figures throughout the football league.

Re: " IS FOOTBALL LOSING ITS APPEAL AGAIN ? "

Anyone notice that SKY are using Sky Sports 2 a lot more for PL & FL games than at anytime I can remember, I always knock SS2,SS3 & SS4 off during the summer months to save some money. That usually means I still get to watch Test match cricket on SS1 but not even that was the case this season.

This weekend PL lunchtime kickoff Man City v Everton is again being shown on SS2 with the monster important Solheim Cup on SS1, I think this is actually SKY trying to get more of their customers to take out the full Sports Premium Channel pack without thinking that just maybe people are struggling to pay the £20 per month extra.

I had a phone call from SKY last Friday asking if I wanted to upgrade to the full Sports Premium Pack and when I asked the guy why should I, if sky stopped showing more football on SS2 than on SS1 I wouldn't have to. He claimed they don't but I soon put him right, anyway I told him if someone could call me by this Friday and explain why this weeks midweek Carling Cup matches are on SS2 while SS1 is showing a Gillette Soccer Special which is also showing on SSN at the sametime, and give me a credible explanation I would consider upgrading. No call yet and I'm not holding my breath.

Thing is for football fans be it your ticket for a live game or your subscription to Sky Sports it all comes out of the same pot and right now we all have less money in the pot to start with. I'm not sure if football is losing it's appeal but I do believe that money or the lack of it is becoming very important to people, especially those who have mortgages or young families. Football and those who are responsible for running it need to get on board with the financial realities facing people at the moment. We all know that clubs field weaker teams in the Carling Cup but still clubs like Leeds charge £38 to watch Man Utd reserve team and still pocket the SKY TV money, I don't know about you but I think it's a disgrace.

We all know both Cardiff and Leicester will have 2 competely different teams in the games this week, but at least the ticket prices have been reduced. This is such a change from when I started watching the Bluebirds because with the exception of injuries and suspensions you would have seen the same teams and the ticket price would have been the same for both games.

5p a match boy those were the days :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Annis, it doesn't help if you got laid off/can't find a job. The recession has hit everyone hard, bar the rich ones  . Like, I'd love to have gone to Blackpool but I don't want to spend all my money on City.

I've been told Swansea have lost their community spirit and closeness the last 2 years with their loyal fans, is it true ?

Re: " IS FOOTBALL LOSING ITS APPEAL AGAIN ? "

Tue Sep 20, 2011 5:35 pm

I gess a bit I supose,but success brings that.
You know your self in the 80s 90s when we both got crowds of 3k and 4 alltho shit crowds the atmosphere was better as most down ther were real fans, and working class and old men in flat caps, these days its new stadiums and all new rules.
If we had 6 k down the vetch it was bouncing, for a long time most of our support came from within the city and we had a good set of lads who new eachother and so but now alltho big crowds and biger fan base its just not the same, probably the same for you.
