Is it right to take the mick out of anyone then? Surely has to be the same for everyone?

if your going to a comedy show then you have to expect everything and anything to be mentioned, if your easily offended then maybe your in the wrong place.

I take it the ones saying yes have no disability themselves or any of their immediate family !

Disability is always funny then, but when it happens to you or your family, it's not quite so funny !

Earlier this year Jimmy Carr cracked a joke where he said the upside of soldiers returning from Afghanistan with limbs blown off was GB would have a brilliant Para-Olympic team in 2012.

Is that funny or sick? I believe it is sick because it is direct ridicule of an individual’s suffering. The same principle has to exist when it comes to making fun of someone who is disabled and ridiculing them for their disability.

However, if the ridicule has nothing to do with disability, just say they are ribbed for their choice of football team, then yes they can be treated the same as anyone else.

My dear loving Mam who is no longer with me always brought me up to never "poke" fun at people as what comes around goes around, and honestly all her life she taught me this "NEVER, EVER "POKE" FUN AT PEOPLE"...and you know what, I never have..If someone has a disability and you are "poking" fun at them, then I tell you what...It speaks volumes about the type of person you are.

I would hazard a guess that most people have laughed at racist, Maddie Mcann, catholic priest, gary glitter jokes. Not to mention the jokes about Jade Goody and Michael Jackson among others.

I can see why some people would be offended but aslong as everyone sees the joke for what it is, a joke....I don't see the problem

It does sound awful but watching the likes of Frankie Boyle tell these sick jokes.....I do laugh. It doesn't mean that I make fun of people more unfortunate than me on a daily basis and that I don't feel sympathy for them.

OK, let me ask you a question, I walk into your pub/place of work etc and start saying "jokes" about your disabled son/daughter/friend. You would probably want to knock my block off, but then I say it's ok I'm a comedian................................................still want to knock my block off?????? :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I'm sorry I just don't see how you can laugh at jokes about returning soldiers have had limbs blown off, I could never see that as just a joke.

These are extremely brave young men who have sufferred terrible injuries that will affect them for the rest of their lives and only the most cowardly would make fun of them and other serverly disabled people.

Sorry but the sense of humour of soldiers even the ones that came back injured i bet they roared at that.Perhaps those with lads or lads themselves who went to Afghanistan can say if that is true or not.

My dear loving Mam who is also no longer with me was actually disabled. Well the arthritas that she suffered with for 30 years made her disabled and eventually took her. So for me the answer is a definate NO.

However, there is a saying and this came from one of the great comedians ever, Robin Williams. His explanation of comedy is tragedy plus time. Today its not funny but it could be later on.

I never said that I laughed at jokes about squaddies. Personally I wouldn't laugh at it because I come from a military family with both my brother and father serving in warzones. However who am I to judge someone if someone laughs at the joke when I know I have laughed at a maddie mcann joke or a racist joke. People have different senses of humour.
Its all pretty irrelevant in this country anyway....we have freedom of speech and if people want to laugh, they can. No matter what you think.

My wife is disabled and the answer is that it depends on a number of factors, including whether the comment personal, is deliberately detrimental and offensive or malicious in its intent....

As in all groups (such as the Irish, the Americans, blondes, gays, large people, gingers, etc) the disabled, in the main, have a sense of humour and are open to a certain amount of banter....despite what the PC Brigade would have you think!!

However, there are LIMITS and it is for the individual to know where the boundaries are in each case....

Unfortunately, as with most things, there are always those who go too far....and THAT is when it gets offensive!!

to me it depends on context.

i went to see jimmy carr last week, he told alot of jokes mainly sick ones, but i laughed along with about 3000 other poeple. i knew what i was going to see, and i paid to see it.
on the other hand if i saw someone going into a pub and bullying a disabled person id feel like punching them.
but im pretty sure jimmy carr for example wouldnt wank into a pub see someone with a disabliltity and think aahh il go and take the piss out of him. im sure he is a very down to earth friendly family man. who makes a living telling jokes along with all other comedians.
if all comedians walked on and told jokes about chickens crossing the road, who'd laugh apart from me

its all about situation and context.

excellent post milly.
re. the returning squadies joke.
my brother-in-law has done several tours of northern ireland, where he saw friends blown up, and 2 tours of iraq, where his best mate lost his leg by being blown up. i can tell you that he laughed at the joke. squadies have a wierd sense of humour, they've got to with all the shit they go through.
i am disabled, my son is classed as special needs and we have both laughed at jokes made by comedians aimed at our problems, the point is the comedian is making a joke to thousands, some will laugh some will be appalled, on stage. he is not having a go in the street, in a pub or anywhere apart from his platform.
life is too serious to be offended at everything, take a step back and laugh at yourself.

I think the word Disabled says it all, if some one has a disability then they already have a life that is ,well shall we say under the quaility of any other person who is classed as non disabled. That make life its self more of a hardship, and god we all know life is hard as it is,without putting more problems in the every day to day life of a person that is not Disabled.
