Cardiff City leading race to sign midfielder

Mon May 18, 2026 10:30 am

Cardiff City are currently leading the race to sign Charlie Savage, The Reading Chronicle understands.

Reading FC midfielder Charlie Savage has garnered a lot of interest ahead of the summer transfer window with Championship sides Cardiff City, Lincoln City, Blackburn Rovers and now recently relegated Sheffield Wednesday all interested in securing the former Welsh international's services.

In January Savage's future at Reading FC was in question as a host of clubs showed interest in the 23-year-old, with local rivals, and recently relegated Oxford United, seeing a bid rejected for the midfielder.

The Yellows reportedly tried to buy the star Reading FC midfielder for a fee of £500,000 which was swiftly rejected, The Reading Chronicle reported at the time that Reading FC held firm with their valuation of Charlie Savage being well over £1.5 million, and that they would not let the midfielder go unless a club matches their own valuation.

It is understood that a fee of £800,000 would be considered enough to secure Charlie, with only another year left on his contract with Reading.

I don’t know too much about the lad, but looking at that list, us and Blackburn are the biggest clubs reportedly in for him?

Doesn’t inspire confidence at £800k but he’s who BBM wants, I’ll go along fir the ride! :ayatollah:

What i have seen of him he is like his father in lots of ways not just welsh but that's in our favour also, but he looks a good prospect works hard in the same ilk as Joe colwill ,but if i was going for a mid fielder it would be if it could happen Jordan james on loan from the French club but perhaps that's to complicated but what a signing he would be now Leicester are relegated .
But happy with savage he has my vote.

BBM knows a player and wht he wants, if he wants him, that's good enough for me.

He's box to box and decent in both attack and defence. Young, has done his time in L1. Go get him.

I just went on cardiff city tv and watched the game at home vs reading where savage played the 6 role , go back watch the extended 25 minute highlights as I was impressed with his performance

He has got a bit about him, much like his dad had and quicker than his old man.

If he signs, then BBM must rate him; otherwise its just paper talk.

We do have a plethora of central midfielders; do we need another?

If Wintle goes, we need a top-level championship or a lower prem level loan, not a lad that done OK in L1

I would guess that Savage would be a replacement for either Wintle or Turnbull.

If they both leave, we'll need another midfielder in addition to Savage. Maybe there can be a loan in that position.

JJ on loan would be nice keep filling up the club with welsh youngsters

The 6 is the most critical position in the BBM system. Robertson has never convinced me, more of the second receiver at the top of the pivot.
If Turnbull goes then great, young Savage offers more mobility and aggression, but we need a genuine 6 to cover the defence

Something to point out is that Man Utd have a very significant sell on clause for Savage.

So if he does leave them for £800k, potentially only half of it is going to Reading - probably explains why they initially overpriced him.

I think Man City put in a 40% sell on clause for Robertson.

I wish we would buy him outright he would be great with the other welsh team mates and could be a city legend but that's upto bbm to ask the question to tan.

But bbm may not want him.

100% agree, I’d say it’s the most important positions we cover this summer. If we want to challenge top-6 that is.

Jordan James stood out in a side that was relegated and was probably the outstanding midfield player in the Championship. He was Championship Young Player of the year. Be great if we could get him but I cant see him going anywhere but the Premier League to kick on his career or- God forbid- to Wrexham for a huge fee and wage deal.

This is where Tan could do some good, by buying james.

I have been a big fan of him since i first saw him for Brum and was surprised he didnt sign for a Premier League club rather than go to France. I watched him last year and his form couldnt have gone unnoticed by the Prem clubs. Even if we could afford him I would be very very surprised if he came here.

Looking more favourable for us to sign savage as lincoln will not compete with the valuation.

I haven't seen much of savage but I rewatched the game against reading at our ground and savage played the number 6 role and was the best midfielder on the pitch , was good in possession and stopped a lot of our attacks and really did a job keeping rubin quiet, so on that 1 performance he was very decent
