About AFC Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon were formed in 2002 as a phoenix club, following the scandalous approval to move the original club to Milton Keynes.

They were first promoted to League One in 2016 and stayed there for six years before relegation in 2022. They returned last season to the third tier.

They are currently 15th with 39 points from 30 games.

Club Connections

Neal Ardley, who played for us and coached our academy, spent six years at Wimbledon between 2012 and 2018.

In that time, he took them to the third tier for the first time in their history. He was also in charge for both their first game and first win against MK Dons.

The Opposition's Manager

Johnnie Jackson was appointed Wimbledon manager in May 2022.

Last season, he guided them back to League One via the play-offs.

He also had a spell in charge of Charlton.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Marcus Browne has eleven league goals this season.

Steve Seddon has been a consistent high performer in defence for them.

Referee

Simon Mather will take charge of this game.

He has refereed 24 games this season, showing 79 yellow cards - an average of 3.3 per game. He hasn't sent any player off.

This is the second Cardiff City game he's taken charge of this season, with the other being our 1-1 draw at Stockport in September.

Head To Head - Last Five Meetings

We have only had three previous meetings with AFC Wimbledon. The first was back in 2015 when we beat them in the EFL Cup.

The other two were this season - we won away there in the league and lost at home to them in the Vertu Trophy.

Team News - Predicted Line-Ups

Cardiff City: Trott, Ng, Osho, Chambers, Bagan, Robertson, Colwill, Turnbull, Tanner, Willock, Kellyman

AFC Wimbledon: Bishop, Tilley, Ogundere, Johnson, Seddon, Nkeng, Maycock, Smith, Hippolyte, Browne, Bugiel

Last Game

We won 3-1 at home to Luton on Saturday.

On the same day, AFC Wimbledon drew 3-3 at Barnsley.

I am more worried about this game than the Luton match, Wimbledon will come and be very direct and physical, I'm interested to see how the false 9 goes in this one as its the type of game Ive been thinking we could struggle without Salech, if we pass this test with flying colours then I'll be a lot more relaxed if Salech is out for longer than expected

We were very lucky in the away game against them. Expecting them to sit in frustrate us and play a very physical game

Always had a bit of a soft spot for Wimbledon because of the scandalous decision to move the original club to Milton Keynes.

Good to see them away from the relegation picture at the moment.

But hopefully we can get another home win after yesterday's great result.

I think on the face of it you’d want Salech to be there to help with the strength they’ll have at the back, but on second thought, they would expect that challenge and have prepared for it.

How we currently play without him, is more about movement and pockets of space, I’m a big fan of his but we have another way of playing when he’s missing, and Kellyman does seem to have the knack to nip in behind.

I think against these big lumpers of centre backs the type of player they’ll least look forward to is Kellyman/Robinson/Davies. They’re well equipped to play the muscle game, less for the mobile forwards

Can't believe we've got the same ref again who did the Stockport game.
Lets give him some stick!

No reason why Cardiff shouldn't win again, although I expect the manager will freshen the team up with two or three changes.
I'll guess 2 -1.
But, make sure you eat before entering the ground!

Cardiff won their only previous league meeting with AFC Wimbledon back in August. The last London side they did the double over were Brentford in the 2017-18 Championship.

AFC Wimbledon won 5-1 at Cardiff in the EFL Trophy earlier this season. The only team they’ve beaten twice on the road in a single campaign as a Football League side are Fleetwood Town in 2018-19.

Cardiff are looking to avoid losing multiple home games against the same opponent in a single season for the first time since 2011-12, when they lost twice at home to West Ham.

AFC Wimbledon have won just two of their seven Football League away games against Welsh sides (D3 L2), though one of these was their most recent visit against Newport County in January 2025.

Small crowd tonight I think.

Been in the Canton concourse since about 6.45pm and it's been very quiet in terms of numbers. Unless everyone is coming in five minutes before kick off.

Little half-chance early on for the Dons after Ryan Wintle concedes possession to Omar Bugiel, but he gets back and recovers well.

All Wimbledon so far. Another burst down the right from Wimbledon precedes the ball falling to Alistair Smith, who drills a shot straight into Nathan Trott's hands.

Chance! Lovely work from Perry Ng as he ghosts down the outside and stabs a cross to the back post. Bishop gets a finger on it and deflects it enough to send Chris Willock's header off target.
