Cardiff City begin their pre-season friendlies in front of fans with a game against Malaysian side Johor on Wednesday at 6pm (UK time).

The match will take place in Murcia, as will the game against Southend a few days later.

This will be Cardiff City fans' first chance to see how the team will set up with Brian Barry-Murphy in charge.

Johor are the reigning Malaysian champions. They have won that title a total of 11 times.

They also won the treble last season for the third time.

They have won the continental AFC Cup once, in 2015.

Johor's current manager is Xisco Munoz, who also had spells in charge of Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.

They are the most supported Malaysian club and the second most supported team in Malaysia, behind Manchester United.

Just a word of note - for anyone taking banners to the ground.

Johor, as Malaysian Champions, are often quoted in the Malaysian Star.

Take from this what you will :)

Hope so Monty, because I'm not going over there.

I think they normally make friendlies available to watch online but sometimes it depends on if the venue/opponents allow it.

CCFC Opposition:

Johor Darul Ta'zim, known as the Southern Tigers, are owned by Tunku Ismail Idris, the Crown Prince of Johor.

They play in the Malaysian Super League and have been crowned champions for seven consecutive seasons, along with completing the treble by winning the Malaysia Cup and the Malaysian FA Cup for the past three seasons.

As champions, the Malaysian outfit qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite, where they advanced to the round of 16 but were defeated by Buriram United 1-0 over two legs.

In the 2024/25 season, the side went unbeaten with a remarkable record of 23 wins and one draw.

The quality of the Malaysian football league, also known as the M-League, is facing significant challenges and is generally considered to be on the decline. Factors contributing to this include a lack of competitive parity, declining fan interest, and financial instability. The standard is very poor and fans are turning away from it.

Here's a more detailed look:

Lack of Competitive Balance:

The league is often dominated by one or two teams, particularly Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), which has won most of the major trophies in the past decade. This predictability can lead to decreased fan engagement and make the league less appealing to watch.

Declining Fan Interest:

There's a noticeable drop in stadium attendance and viewership figures, which is partly attributed to the lack of competitiveness and the dominance of a few teams. Economic factors also play a role, as the cost of attending matches can be prohibitive for some fans.

Financial Instability:

Some clubs face financial difficulties, leading to unpaid salaries and other issues that negatively impact the league's overall quality.

Other Issues:

The league also faces issues like poor refereeing, uninspiring play from some teams, and the increasing trend of fans watching highlights instead of live matches.

The club have confirmed that the matches against Johor, Southend, QPR and Notts County will be available on Cardiff City TV.

Each match will cost £5.

If you live outside the UK and have an international pass, these four games are included in that pass.

They must have just released the international pass option as it wasn't there on Monday when I checked.

Who do we think will captain the team tonight? I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything at this stage. But could be an indication of who is likely if no others come in with better attributes/experience/leadership etc.
I believe it will be Chambers or Wintle tonight

I assume Chambers is the first half captain, him or Horvath probably.

Were still playing the ball out from the back fannying about in our own penalty box.

I had hoped this tactic would disappear.

Most teams do it and with small room for error. Which is why if u do it u need to do it right. With his man City history always a chance he would do it.

Even start.

City had an early chance with Etete, only just went wide.

Johor have had a few shots but nothing to worry Horvath.

Their standard is Lower than low:

From City fans their:

Same shit kicking back to keeper stupid mistakes and bbm saying nothing like riza the other team like top prem team, yet TNS probably better.

Tan must be telling them what to do again:

It’s a friendly so I won’t take it to heart .

Friendly

He wants them to keep the ball, but they just need to learn what to do with it.

Expected early on in preseason, as long as we see progress throughout the summer.

These players are used to dinosaur football, will take some time to play with zip and flair.

Tsunoda looked very good until he got injured. I know it's only pre season so can't read too much into it, but King and Mafico looked way off the standard we require. Very disjointed as you'd expect and no decent football, but at least football is back.
