Venue Ninian Park
Cardiff City v Chelsea
A day for the Terrace lads on both sides,
Biggest mob ever to come to Ninian Park,
Swamped us from early doors with huge numbers though Cardiff did put up good fight back.
All parts of Ninian Park their were battles, Chelsea even tried to take the Bob Bank:

Villa at home 1969
Birmingham at home 1970
Leeds at home fa cup 1972
Leeds away fa cup 1974
These games were right up there for trouble along with the Chelsea and Man utd games, been some mental times watching the city.

Cardiff are facing the camera Chelsea have their backs...thefence is nowhere to be seen but Chelsea didn't make a move later photo shows fence closed...Chelsea didn't have it all their own way that day...but as for size of mob and organisation they were very good...

It sure was. As a young skooligan i went in very early on the train from Barry to Cardiff General as it was then called. Soon had a rude awakening. Leeds weren't boys like me and my mates they were men and chased us down Ninian Park Road and later on Sloper Road but couldn't keep up with us youngsters. It was the first time I had seen men in their thirties and even forties getting involved
Later on my mate got arrested in the ground and led down the tunnel by the police as they used to do then. He was just kicked out of the ground. He was in trouble Monday morning in school as his teacher was in the grandstand and saw it.

He later joined British Transport Police and used to travel on the train in an official capacity to away games

Thought I was being clever and joined my dad in the Grandstand for that game.
Still got a piece of wooden seat in the back of my head.

I was a skinny 16 year old who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag, but I had Olympic speed. And boy, did i need it down Ninian Park road

Didn't stop running until Cardiff market, then got accosted by an Ely mob believing we were Chelsea as we were "well dressed". The ultimate compliment for a couple of Llanedeyrn kids.

We must have been the same school year.
I was an Ely lad..... never too late for an apology, so, I'm sorry for the mix up.

Another glorification of the so called' good old days'.The actual football match was great as well.Chelsea were top of the table and we were struggling. We were 3 nil up at half time and Chelsea came back to draw 3 all.

I was scared to death, they had Stanley's, they weren't tossing around.

Agreed, it was a good match and we were robbed by the ref giving Chelsea a very dubious penalty behind the chelsea fans (think he would have been mobbed if he had not given it).
Getting home was a nightmare.

I was in the grandstand too. Thought it would be safe til a huge mob of Chelsea clambered up from the enclosures. Time to go!!

Genuine question, well before my time, but was it "just attack anyone" in opposition colours ? or were regular fans just left alone ? and how could they identify who was who ?

I started watching city 1974 i think Everton in the fa cup should also be on that list it was mad that day in the bob bank.

I went to the match with my dad. Terrifying scenes. Fight everywhere and in jubilee park opposite the ground. The Chelsea nutters were even attacking the monstrous Alsatian police dogs. Mental.
Tue Jun 10, 2025 4:02 pm
3-3 game?
Tue Jun 10, 2025 4:32 pm
Chelsea got a right kicking on the bob bank , just in front of us
After the game there was a number of Chelsea coaches with their windows out through in the car park and fans in Chelsea tops getting first aid
Two ambulances turned up to their supporters too
I think Chelsea are a bunch of tossers personally and they certainly didn't expect to be on the end of some right nutters down here
A Chelsea coach from Brighton made the mistake of getting stuck in traffic outside The Ninian Park Pub too
They regretted that
