A forum for all things Cardiff City

Cardiff City have compiled a shortlist of managers to be interviewed.
It is now believed that two of them are Des Buckingham and Ian Evatt.
Wouldn't be disappointed with either, but Buckingham would be my preference.

Either of those surely have to be better than the last two clowns that relegated us.
Tue May 20, 2025 5:44 pm
I don't know enough about either of them but whoever it is will get my full support.
Tue May 20, 2025 5:46 pm
That’s mad that.
Wonder if either will get offended by having to interview.

I don't think either would be offended to be honest.
Evatt left Bolton in League One so would have expected interviews for other League One jobs.
Buckingham may have thought he had a shot at lower Championship jobs but we do have a bit of a pull, being one of the biggest clubs in League One next season.
You know more about Buckingham than I do, but he would be my preference - although I wouldn't be disappointed with Evatt either.

i like the look of buckingham but wouldnt be disappointed with evatt

If it’s out of those two then it’s Des Buckingham for me. Very unlucky to lose his job at Oxford when they were pushing for a play off spot. Their form dropped when he left.
Would love to see who else was considered.

Ian Evatt looks the better option on paper for me. He’s done it with Barrow and Bolton with a decent record.
Tue May 20, 2025 6:27 pm
Ned, just out of interest, where has this come from and how reliable is it?
I’d be happy with either but slightly more drawn to Buckingham, as I feel he’s better placed for the championship if and when we go back up.

Got to be evett buckinham not any better than Riza has done
Nothing much lost a lot more games than wins sacked by oxford i know that does not make a difference but his stats are terrible

I feel the opposite one has championship experience and promotion from league 1 the other hasn't been higher than league 1.

This has got to be a wind up surely.
No better than Riza and ‘hasn’t done much’ - he was the one to get Oxford promoted from the league we are going to be in…
With all due respect that comment is as silly as some of the things you say during the transfer windows.

I can’t imagine Buckingham doing anything other than impressing if he does get interviewed.
Bolton were a bit of a team of bellends under him.

Agree:
Crazy comment.
Record at Oxford was 20 wins 16 draws and 23 losses. Overall record as a manager is 43% win rate.
Shows your knowledge of football is equal to your record of calling transfers.

They are just about to drop into relegation zone. Their form improved significantly when Rowett took over.
However, Des was very unlucky with injuries.

Beale looks as if going to Hull!

Every manager needs to be judged against the sqaud they have. Without checking My GUESS is Oxford had players with more championship experience than Bolton, so they were probably better.
Schumacher hadn't really improved Bolton after Evatt had left perhaps 8th is as good as that squad can get.
Rowett got a bit more from Oxford after he took over, but maybe that was the kick up the backside they needed.
They are both young managers, it is about who has reflected and improved the most.
I am happy with either

That’s a fair assessment. I wouldn’t be against either of them. Ian Evatt points per game and win ratio is a lot higher than Buckingham but Buckingham has been at a higher level. Difficult one.

Players with championship experience at Oxford under Des were
Matt Phillips
Shemi Placheta
Ciaran Brown
Mark Harris
Will Vaulks
Only Vaulks had played regularly.

I saw that Football League World reported it and asked someone.
They confirmed that Buckingham and Evatt were being interviewed.

What I like about the Des Buckingham potential appointment is that he's also got a record of getting a tune out of players and turning their career's around casing point Josh Murphy was a key player for him when they got promotion.
Also winning a big one off game like a play off final is a big tick.
How many times were we nearly men under Dave Jones.
Played some amazing football but when it really counted, we folded like a pack of cards.

Evatt has a better win percentage by around 50%. Has more experience
Tue May 20, 2025 9:05 pm
I don't know much about either of them, but I'm amazed that the selection process has been this quick. Usually the powers that be procrastinate over their decision until it's too late for the new manager to get settled and sort out the team they want.

Was thinking exactly the same.
Out of the recent names mentioned I’d rather go for Seles.
Tue May 20, 2025 10:29 pm
I'd be happy with either, both experienced at league one level.
Buckingham would be my gp to though if I had a choice, I feel his ceiling is higher than Evatts.
Tue May 20, 2025 10:39 pm
Think after digging into both, starting to lean Evatt now.
“ Evatt prefers an attacking, possession-based style that aims to dominate the game through ball control and quick transitions”
Id be happy with that, been a while since Cardiff can keep the ball and attack.
Also seen he likes his team to press high and win the ball high up the field, which I love to see.

Des Buckingham is hardly anymore experienced that Riza was - if anything Riza had more experience in the English game.
Managing in South Asia/New Zealand hardly counts.
If people want an experienced manager then it has to be Evatt for me.
