I saw Sham 69 at the Top Rank, about 78. both Sham & the Upstarts had a massive West Ham following. My brother did a bit of drumming for the Oppressed, great band.

Also saw SLF in Grannies, above what is now the Prince of Wales, the place was dodgy as f**k, but the atmosphere was great.

I used to live a few miles from Hersham, where Sham 69 came from and which spawned their song Hersham Boys. I had a beer one night in the company of one of their former members. Don't know if this is true or whether it was a drunken wind-up but they all had chisels tattoed on their forearms

Great bands
Not old enough to remember them when they first came on the scene but when I was I was growing up I use to hang around with a older punk and use to listen to punk music all the time and still do.
I went to the SLF 30th Anniversary tour, London Astoria in 97 which was Awesome
I also love The Clash

Saw all of the above in my youth. Was at the very same Sham 69 gig at the Top Rank which Rick mentioned.
The Stowaway in Newport was another great venue and I loved the trips over to Bristol to watch bands at the Hippodrome. The fighting afterwards beat anything you found at football matches

Saw SLF a few times in the punk years at the Top Rank or whatever name it went by in those days. It seemed to change it's name every week.
Also saw The Clash in Sophia Gardens and I remember they were supported by Peter Tosh.
Loads of bands came during the punk years. At one gig at the Top Rank (may have been The Damned but not certain) you had to take off your belts and braces and collect them from a box on the way out.
I also remember a concert where anyone wearing Doc Martens had to take the laces out before they would be let in!

Remember the stowaway well, saw some good bands there, i remember at the 999 gig, there was a big fella at the bar, with loads of gold rings on his knuckles. some said his name was Tiny, from Millwall. Don't know if it was true, but the fella wasn't "tiny" if you know what i mean.

Never missed many gigs at the Stowaway in the late 70's early 80's saw 999 there and the only big fella I remember was Nubsy from Trowbridge .

I remember Grannies Rick and you're right it was a shithole.
I saw Spandau Ballet there in their "teatowel" wearing early days.
To Cut A Long Story Short - they were absolute shite.
