BREAKING STEVE MORISON: ' FRIDAY 4TH MARCH 2022 '

Thu Mar 03, 2022 7:02 am

:bluebird: :bluebird: “ STEVE MORISON WILL UPDATE CARDIFF CITY FANS “ :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 4th March 2022

Steve Morison says he would like to keep some out-of-contract players, but it might be taken out their hands.

STEVE MORISON:

"Everyone knows there are financial constraints that weren’t in place before for the club. We are going to have to change the market we are in."

Reduce the wage bill in summer?

"Yeah, of course."

How is it looking for QPR?

Everyone is back in. Will and James Collins, who missed the game through illness, trained yesterday and will train again today.

Everyone is in a better place, but it’s the staff now, we are on our way out! We are struggling, us lot. But we don’t need to run around, we’ll be all right.

Morison

Squad reaction to your appointment?

It’s been fine! A couple of texts because I didn’t see them after the game.

I had a meeting with them to thank them yesterday. I wouldn’t be sat here for a longer period of time if it wasn’t for them and their efforts.

I told them I respected them all anyway but I respect them even more now. They could have not bothered with me, not bought into it, not trusted me, but they have.

Morison

Steve Morison himself has said that recruitment will be the "biggest key" in ensuring the long-term success of the club moving forward and few would disagree with him.

While much of that will centre around which players will be signed in the summer and beyond and how big his budget will be, there are important conversations to be had regarding players who are already at the club.

YES, there are 10 players who are out of contract in June and those talks will be hurtling along at a rate of knots in the coming weeks, no doubt.

But there are also eight players who are currently out on loan:

Josh Murphy (Preston North End), Gavin Whyte ( League 1 Oxford United), Ciaron Brown ( League 1 Oxford United), James Connolly ( League 2 Bristol Rovers), Chanka Zimba (League 2 Northampton Town), Keenan Patten ( Lower non league Hereford), Tom Sang (St Johnstone) and Kieron Evans (Linfield).

Murphy's contract is up at the end of the season and he is unlikely to be offered a new one. The same can also be said for defender Brown.

You can now decide and sort out which players you would like to keep and give new contracts to?

Had a week or so of this, so tomorrow first time to select from a full squad for a while?

Yeah, we got through it which shows the character of the group. They put their bodies on the line.

The boys know the job they’ve got to do and we hope they carry it out.

They were playing for your future as well as the club’s?

I said that to them.

I shared a pitch with a lot of them. So standing in front of them and asking them to do a job, I’ve got the utmost respect for them.

They’ve managed to get me an extended period in the job. I’m really grateful and thankful to them.

My View: Steve Morison has deservedly earned a years contract in what he has achieved with NO money. Kept Cardiff City up and improved our football vastly :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Pleased to hear Tan say we are going to build a competitive squad this summer under Steve Morison, I look forward to this summer and Steve Morison getting a good budget :thumbright: :bluebird:

Owner Vincent Tan:

“I’ve been very pleased with the way Steve has improved our style of play and has helped get the best out of our younger and more established players.”

“Steve deserves this opportunity following the hard work that he has put into driving the players forward on and off the field.”

“I am confident that he is the right person to build a competitive squad over the summer months and I look forward to our continued, honest and positive working relationship.”

STEVE MORISON:

Gap to the relegation zone now, how much are you able to focus on planning next season?

It’s always in the thoughts. It’s always been a process.

Ultimately, we still got to win games of football, no one wants to lose no matter where you are.

That’s got to be our main focus. Let’s just carry on what we’re doing.

Outside of that, we are planning on the future, hence Isaak Davies’ contract, others in the pipeline.

Then we start putting down and nailing down other areas of recruitment.

STEVE MORISON:

Players out of contract playing for futures?

Yeah, they were always playing for their futures.

They’ve got someone in place now where there is not much uncertainty around it.

Those conversations can be more finalised now, deciding where people’s futures lie.

Everyone knows there are financial constraints that weren’t in place before for the club. We are going to have to change the market we are in.

It’s really exciting.

STEVE MORISON:

After the Rams win, Morison said of his contract:

“It happened really quickly. They offered it to me yesterday. It was something you (media) all knew I wanted. It was a case of getting it all sorted.”

"We did that throughout the course of the day. I've been acting as if I was going to be here because you can't sit here and wait. The things I'm putting in place will help the football club long term.”

"We need to evolve as a football club, we need to move away from where we've been because the game's changing. We've got to move with the change - recruitment and scouting teams know what type of players we want. It would be the same if someone else was here.”

“ "I was asked to help out and do a job. Done that to best of my ability while learning on the job. I've made some mistakes, made some really good decisions, had a really god transfer window. There is always a fear they would turn round and say 'Thanks, but we're going to do this' which I was fully prepared for as well.”

"You hope the results on the pitch help. I was very hopeful but until you sign that paper it hasn't happened. I've done that now and put it in a drawer somewhere."

STEVE MORISON:

Would you like to keep some out of contract?

Yeah of course. There are discussions to be had. Things might be taken out of our hands.

They are all senior players who can all walk, regardless of what we offer.

There are going to be some difficult and honest conversations. What will be, will be.

It’s never a nice thing when you are coming to the end of your contract and there is uncertainty.

With everything the way it’s going, there has to be a sense of self-awareness of where the club is now.

That’s where the conversations are going to be easier maybe, because players might say ‘I can’t stay for that’, or whatever.

But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Re: STEVE MORISON:

STEVE MORISON:

Reduce the wage bill in summer?

Yeah, of course.

But people need to not just take us as a single entity. That will be across the league.

That doesn’t mean we will be at a massive disadvantage, everyone will be the same.

There will be a few outliers, teams who have come down from the Premier League, but that will be the general consensus across the league.

There won’t be a sudden influx of money in the league. You look at Derby, Reading, clubs like that. We just need to be sustainable.

That means it’s an easier place to work.

Ryan Wintle: Morison has given us more belief

Midfielder Ryan Wintle believes Steve Morison has given the squad more belief since coming in as manager.

Morison was keen to bring Wintle back from his loan at Blackpool at the beginning of January and he has made a massive difference to the Bluebirds engine room.

The manager has spoken about evolving the football club and getting it more align with the top teams in the Championship. The shift in playing style has definitely helped with that.

And Wintle hopes Morison and his coaching staff can build on the foundations which have been put in place over the last few months.

RYAN WINTLE:

“It’s great for everyone. It’s great for me because he’s been playing me and I’m really happy with that."

"The results have improved so he deserves it. Hopefully, we can win a lot more games next season.

“I just think he’s given us more belief and making sure that we know that we’re good players, to get the ball down and pass it to each other, because that’s ideally how we want to play.”

STEVE MORISON:

Excited about the future?

Yeah I am really excited.

But there is a sense of realism. We need to get the next bit right, that’s going to be the key to it.

We have got the players who have done really well this year. They will be so much better than that next year. We will help them grow.

STEVE MORISON:

Isaak Davies sorted, his rise has happened quickly?

Yeah. He has done excellently.

I had him in the under-23s and he did very good. His pace was always going to be a super strength of his.

There are other sides of his game he needs to work on. He said he needs to realise that his pace is an added extra to the rest of his game. He needs to work on the rest of his game.

He needs to learn to calm himself in the moments. It’s getting the consistency and then he will be a top, top player.

Re: STEVE MORISON:

Thu Mar 03, 2022 12:09 pm

You can now decide and sort out which players you would like to keep and give new contracts to?

STEVE MORISON:

"I'm sure now it's a conversation I can actually bring up with the board," Morison said of the contracts situation. "I can ask where we are going, what we are doing, what the budget is.

"Is there anyone I want to keep? How do they fit into what we want to do? We can start having those conversations now."

"Hopefully, we will get some new contracts out to some people and that can all escalate a bit quicker now."

From that last sentence, it is clear that Morison does at least want to keep a couple of players heading out the door.

He has spoken highly of Joe Ralls when asked about the midfielder's future, while he also said he has held early talks with the board over Sean Morrison, too - quite what the contents of that conversation was is uncertain, though.

"Joe is one of the main players i would like to keep here for next season."

But it is all part of what promises to be a huge summer, arguably the biggest transfer window for the club in a decade or more.

Morison has proved with his January recruits that he knows what players he wants, how they fit into his system and they have all made positive impacts.

That will have to be the case this summer, too, and Morison knows it.

He wants Cardiff City to catch up with the top dogs in the division and that, he said, all boils down to the club's recruitment this summer.

Get it right and that, he says, will hold the key to Cardiff's success.

"The things I'm putting in place will help the football club long term," he added. "We need to evolve as a football club, we need to move away from where we've been because the game's changing."

"We've got to move with the change - recruitment and scouting teams know what type of players we want. It would be the same if someone else was here."

"The reality is there is more pressure now. We've got to produce a squad of players and get them going in the right direction. The pressure has ramped up now."

"The main thing is we can't relax and settle, we need to keep pushing and raising our standards. That starts in pre-season and having a whole pre-season."

"We've got to nail down a culture, accountability and expectations on the group. The biggest key to this job is recruitment and getting that right. If we get the recruitment right it'll make what happens on the pitch a hell of a lot easier."

QPR going for promotion, what are you expecting?

They are doing excellent, they are still in the play-offs.

We are just going to spoil the party!

That’ll be our message to going to teams at the top, can we ruin their day?

I was really disappointed when we lost to them in the second game of mine. They had one moment and scored.

STEVE MORISON:

Style and culture can attract players?

Vision is the biggest one. What they are coming into.

The structure, the setup, the opportunities. Being a part of something new and exciting, we just need to make sure we sell that.

We just need to get the right people.

I’ll say it now. If someone is coming here because they just want money, that’s not someone we want in the building.

That’ll be how we want to work it.

Security in contracts, length etc, rather than money?

Of course. For me you never turn down a contract.

Ultimately, everyone has their own agenda and want to do their own thing.

There’s no point getting stressed about it because we are not the only team in the league, there are 92!

Yeah, 100%. When you ask me about it I just tell you the truth.

His statement backs that up. We had a conversation about it again yesterday, like we do.

It’s really exciting just to hear everyone on the same page.

You see things from afar and hear about what happens at other places, when everyone is going in the same direction it makes this job a hell of a lot easier.

It’s really pleasing from my point of view.

Re: BREAKING STEVE MORISON: ' FRIDAY 4TH MARCH 2022 '

Davies an example?

All of the youngsters need to shake off the sense of entitlement.

The hardest thing in football is staying at the level you are at. You get there and then just go ‘Oh I’m here’. The best ones keep going until you can’t get any higher.

The hardest bit is maintaining, you don’t realise you have to keep your levels so high.

Just because you have had a couple of games and scored a couple of goals, it’s half the job.

Isaak, as an example, just gives his all, all of the time. He runs himself into the ground. In training, in games, he has been so engaged.

I’m really pleased we’ve got him signed up.

That would be my message to all the young players - the hard work actually starts now.

If you decide you’ve worked hard enough and don’t want to work hard, we’ll move past you with someone else. That’s the harsh reality of football.

If you don’t keep trying to improve, I experienced it as a player, they are always trying to replace you. As soon as you get to a certain age, they are trying to replace you with someone younger.

It’s constantly having that mentality to be better.

Mark McGuinness has had to play every game, still only 21, how has he managed that?

It’s a tough one, we speak about it all the time.

He is someone, we think the same, it would be good to take him out at times but we haven’t managed to do that.

But we will be able to.

He is a nightmare because even yesterday he wanted to go out and train again and it’s just like, ‘Look, relax, just train tomorrow’.

He wanted to train properly because he felt good. It’s just getting him to realise we want the best for him.

He is a big lad, I forget he is 21 years old. We will look after him and he will get his time out and bring him back in as and when needed.

Not that he’ll be happy with that!
