BREAKING STEVE MORISON: 'FRIDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 2022'

:bluebird: :bluebird: " STEVE MORISON WILL UPDATE CARDIFF CITY FANS " :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 25th February 2022

STEVE MORISON:

“Every game is a test, including against top teams who are flying, but they’re tests that we’ve stood up to so far. I expect the team to do that again this weekend."

STEVE MORISON:

Any knocks and bumps?

Yeah plenty of knocks and bumps! Nothing that will rule anyone out though.

Everyone is alright.

Steve Morison

What’s the overriding feeling?

Just got to realise that Saturday is nine out of 11 in this run.

For 80 minutes they were excellent, kick in the teeth at the death.

It’s just dust yourselves down and go again. Morale in the camp is fine. The staff are all good.

No travelling on Saturday!

Steve Morison

Fulham, Ultimate test for you?

Liverpool was the ultimate test!

Fulham are beating teams 5-0 or 6-0. Every game is another test, especially the top teams who are flying and have confidence.

These tests are ones we’ve stood up to so far and I expect us to do that this weekend.

Steve Morison

Back at home, need all the support this weekend

We have got as good a chance as anyone has. It’s a game of football!

Ultimately we can top the 20,000 mark, we’ve got huge games every week.

It’s great. It’s a great place to be.

We are definitely not thinking we can’t get anything from this game.

Plenty of positives from Wednesday?

Excellent performance.

Do we want to be more like Huddersfield? Yes. Can we be more like them now? No.

Things take time.

You look at them a while back and where they are now, you believe in the process that’s where you can get to.

Lots of positives. Tommy got a goal, lots of good performances.

I told the players, don’t let that affect what you’ve been doing up until now.

Fulham?

They’ve been fantastic haven’t they?

They should be where they are. They pay more money than anyone else, they have a bigger budget than anyone else.

They have the best striker in the league and they’ve got fantastic players all around them.

It’s a great challenge, a great test. We will put a plan together to nullify them as much as we can and use our strengths to hurt them as well.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 2 CARDIFF CITY 1

Cardiff manager Steve Morison told BBC Radio Wales:

"For 80 minutes, it was the perfect away performance, then they get their moment after a mistake at the death and we lose the game.

"We're doing really well. I'm really pleased with the boys. The result is all that matters - I totally get that.

"They [Huddersfield] are on a really good run and it was really disappointing we didn't manage to end that run because I felt like we could have done. They weren't really hurting us - they had a lot of the ball but didn't get many chances.

"We can be proud of our showing tonight. The whole team can build on that."

They are on their way to title Fulham?

Credit to them. Scott Parker has done a great job there and they’ve carried on with a new head coach.

Fantastic players, fantastic team, but we need to make sure we carry out our job.

Re: STEVE MORISON:

STEVE MORISON:

“We’re frustrated that we didn’t see it out away at Huddersfield,” he began.

“As I said to them at half time, it looked perfect in the first half. We defended well, I don’t think they had a shot, we had all the chances and didn’t take one, I just asked them for more of the same.

“Huddersfield changed three or four times in the second half, their formation and tactics. But we were quite comfortable and then got the goal, which was a really good one.

“They did all the football, then scored their goals from long balls into the box, which is really frustrating because we should be dealing with those, especially the second goal.”

Steve went on to speak about the post-match mood in the dressing room, before looking ahead to Saturday’s encounter with Fulham at Cardiff City Stadium.

"It was a perfect away performance, up until the last 15 minutes, which is all that matters. It’s pleasing that the lads are carrying out the jobs they’re asked, it means they’re right on board with what we’re doing.

“The most pleasing thing is seeing them in the dressing room being so upset and distraught about it, because it means a hell of a lot to the lads that we haven’t got something from the game."

He concluded, “My job now is to pick them up, because we’ve got Fulham on Saturday."

How do you stop Mitrovic?

Top of the goalscoring charts, a fantastic player. He’s been amazing for Fulham.

He is a top-drawer player. He has broken records for Fulham and we have to limit his service and the opportunities he gets.

It only takes one for him to score. It’s a big ask, but they’ve got to stop us as well. It’s only a game of football.

Huddersfield staff tried to get Hugill sent off?

When asked whether Huddersfield's coaching staff were trying to get Hugill sent off, Morison replied: "Yeah, basically.

"He caught him. He didn't mean to catch him.

"Yellow was the right decision. I spoke to the ref and he said he didn't mean to do it, he just caught it, leant back, put his arm up, didn't make a movement towards him.

"It's one of those flashpoints, everyone has got their own opinion. They are trying to get him sent off, we are trying to not get him sent off."

Flint v Mitrovic - confrontation the way to tackle it?

He’s so much more than that.

We have to stop the ball into his feet. He can go longer, win balls in the air.

He is only one of 11 or 14 they might use. Let's hope it’s not the Mitrovic show.

Ryan Wintle, he has been a constant force for you?

He has been excellent since he came through the door.

He did excellent for Blackpool and they didn’t want to let him go.

He is really enjoying his work. He just gets on with his job and goes home - he’s been excellent.

It was different when he came back - a different person in the manager’s seat. I had a couple of conversations with him to come back.

He has come back and it’s a fresh start.

How was the journey back?

Long! You just relax. Food, recover, just trying to recover. We got back at 3am and you just pray your kid doesn’t wake you up in the morning - but they do! At 7am!

It’s just about coming back in and getting smiles on the lads’ faces.

We will do a lot of video work on Fulham now.

We are in a nice place at the minute because they know what they are doing and it’s just about picking the right personnel for that.

Re: STEVE MORISON:

Thu Feb 24, 2022 5:01 pm

Are conversations happening with players?

STRVE MORISON:

It’s more of a club decision, to be honest.

From the club’s point of view, we have had conversations but they are all hypothetical and not set in stone.

No one has come knocking on my door and asking about contracts, because everyone knows we are right in the middle of a fight we need to get out of. Once that happens I’m sure things will escalate a bit more.

I’m sure if I signed a contract tomorrow then those conversations would happen even quicker.

But that’s just where we are at the minute. It’s not a conversation I can overly have with the players.

STEVE MORISON:

You can trouble teams now, like Fulham?

Respect them, respect what they’ve done and are doing, but they give up chances and you have to take those chances.

Players, fans, everyone can’t get frustrated with it.

We had nine chances in the first half the other night and they had none.

They had to change what they did in the second half. That second goal, Flinty takes a step backwards and heads it away and we finish the game 1-1.

They knew they had got away with one there because they knew we did a job on them.

I was proud as punch after.

It’s just about being respectful but it’s our job to try and stop that.

Corberan: Win was like Man Utd Champions League final

Huddersfield Town boss Carlos Corberan has likened the Terriers' win over Cardiff to Manchester United's famous Champions League win over Bayern Munich in 1999.

In Barcelona 23 years ago, it was Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, once of this parish, who were the heroes for Sir Alex Ferguson's men. On Wednesday night, it was Josh Koroma and Jon Russell with the late heroics.

While, of course, there was less on the line, Corberan praised his players' mentality to fight for the victory until the death.

“I remember Bayern Munich were winning the game,” he said. “And Manchester United scored two goals from set-pieces in extra-time and won the Champions League.

“This of course is not the Champions League but one of the skills you need to have as a player is the skill to not give up.

“So, I am pleased because the players fought to the end.

“That is one skill in football if you don’t have it is difficult to compete. Every player needs to have that mentality.

“It was more about that desire than the tactical side, but the players appreciated the situation.”

"I'm really, really pleased for him," manager Steve Morison said of the goal.

'STEVE MORISON:

"He said he hadn't scored yet as he was walking out! So he was due a goal.

"It was a really well-worked goal. I knew we would have the moments, like we did in the first half, it's just a shame a couple didn't fall to him in the first half."

ICYMI: Josh Murphy nearing return

Josh Murphy has opened up on his difficult spell on the treatment table up at Preston North End.

The Cardiff City loanee has been out for months owing to an ankle ligament injury but is finally back training fully and hopes to be in contention for selection soon.

“It’s been tough, because it’s ended up being so long,” Murphy said. “I think this is the start of my 17th week being injured, so it has definitely been tough physically and mentally, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel which is great.

“I’m out on the grass now, back with the boys, so it’s now about building that fitness and being able to be ready for the matchdays and to hopefully be in the manager’s thoughts.”

Murphy went to Deepdale largely because he knew then manager Frankie McAvoy. However, Ryan Lowe has since taken over and he hopes to impress his new manager and get straight back into action as soon as possible.

“When a new manager comes in you want to impress him straight away and you can’t do that from the gym or the treatment room, so that has been disappointing, but it’s something I’ve been looking forward to," he added.

“You can see how the boys have been playing. He’s kind of galvanised us and we’re playing a lot more attacking football.

“Everyone’s playing with a lot more freedom and I think I can thrive off that, so I’m really looking forward to working with him and Marshy [Mike Marsh], and hopefully I can get into his thoughts sooner rather than later.

“I’ve had a couple of good chats with him about the way he wants to use me, and it’s really promising for me.

“He wants to play attacking football, which obviously I want to do, so I think it could be a really good fit. I’m just so excited to show what I can do.”

STEVE MORISON:

Team can roll up its sleeves now, plays tactically and technically now?

Yeah, that’s what it takes.

Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and your ego. If you go toe to toe with certain teams you’ll get hurt.

It’s about having a game plan and carrying it out.

It’s about people buying into it. That’s the most pleasing thing for me, they all believe in the process.

It’s some shift they have to put in to do it.

The numbers they are putting up, data-wise, from our point of view is through the roof.

We’ve got to carry that out more often than not to get results.

Fulham or Derby more important?

STEVE MORISON:

The biggest thing we’ve got to look at is this is game number nine of 11 we have had in a run.

Once we get to QPR it’s actually a free week before Preston.

It’s a case of getting through the next three games in the best physical shape you can.

You look at Fulham and the players who didn’t play Wednesday and the players who can come in on Saturday… that’s why they are top of the league!

Derby are quite a depleted team as well. Derby will be a huge game, but everyone is in the same boat.

Derby and us, the squads are quite evenly matched. But the only plus point is that it’s two home games and no travelling.

Toney or Mitro better?

They’ve had incredible seasons. Mitrovic has done it more consistently than Toney.

Mitrovic in the Championship has been phenomenal. Normally the best strikers play for the best teams who score the most goals!

Mitrovic, the biggest challenge for him is replicating it more when he goes up to the Premier League.

It was fantastic and they are a credit to the football club. Us as players and staff can’t thank them enough, they are there through thick and thin.

We all appreciate it.

The fan numbers have been creeping up at home as well. Let’s hope we can creep up the table as well.

Had any managerial advice?

Not overly. We talk in the office a lot.

I don’t want to get clouded by other people’s opinions on stuff. Everyone has their own opinion.

You can start having so much information you are struggling to find your own opinion in there.

Lots of people have opinions but they don’t want to talk to you about them - even if they have your phone number.

There are people I can ring and I have snippets, text conversations with people. But when it comes to football information, what goes on, what’s really difficult is that people don’t actually know what’s going on in the building.

Ex-managers, people you know say things but there is always context to what’s going on.

Have you changed since you got the job?

I wouldn’t say I have changed.

The biggest thing is there is more on your decisions now than what there was previously.

The loss of control, once you step over the white line, it’s something you have to internally deal with.

But in terms of the way I act, the things I do, not overly. You do have to try and be true to yourself.

Have I learned anything? Yeah. I can’t be too honest because it upsets too many people! I’ve still got to get that balance right but I’ll get there.

I still deal in facts. That’s what I’ll always do.

If I’ve done something wrong I’ll apologise for it - if not, I won’t!

Vaulks has stepped up?

He’s been excellent. It’s been tough for a few of them, Tommy coming in and Ryan coming back meant there was more competition and change is difficult for people to deal with.

People react in different ways, but from Will’s point of view he has been patient and he has been good every time he has come in.

I think he has been excellent.

And what about Vaulks with Wales?

It really disappoints him when he doesn’t get selected. So it’s a good thing that he cares.

All he can do is play and do well. We are on Wales’ doorstep, so he is here and can see him playing.

If they see him doing well there’s no reason he shouldn’t be in there.

Steve Morison says Huddersfield Town are Cardiff City's template as he urges patience over style and recruitment

The Bluebirds want to see themselves shoot up the table in the coming years and believe the Terriers are an example of how best to do that

By Glen Williams Junior Journalist

Friday 25th February 2022

Steve Morison believes Cardiff City can take inspiration from Huddersfield Town's rise over the last year

Steve Morison believes the rise of Huddersfield Town should be an example to Cardiff City and the direction in which they want to move in the future.

The Terriers had a torrid time of it last season, constantly flirting with relegation before finishing 20th in the Championship table.

It was unexpected that they would embark on such an incredible run this term, with their midweek win over the Bluebirds representing their 14th successive game in the league in which they have gone unbeaten.

They now sit in fourth place and are arguably the form side in the whole division, just two points off the automatic promotion spots. They have the Premier League in their crosshairs and the mood in west Yorkshire is bouncing.

That, Morison said, is what Cardiff ultimately want. After such a disappointing first half of this current campaign, it has been a constant battle to stave off relegation.

Exactly one year ago, Huddersfield were under pressure from fans, with many calling for manager Carlos Corberan to be sacked. Sources at the Yorkshire club had to confirm to news outlets they were fully behind the manager and the process.

Now, the results are there for all to see and Morison believes that should serve as motivation for Cardiff in the months and perhaps years ahead.

STEVE MORISON:

"Do we want to be more like Huddersfield? Yes. Can we be more like them at the minute? No," Morison said on Friday morning.

"You look at where they were a while back and where they are now, it shows if you believe in the process that’s where you can get to."

Morison hopes he is the man to oversee the squad rebuild, of course, but whoever it is who spearheads the recruitment drive this summer will have the biggest opportunity in years to reshape the squad for the better.

Morison concedes that, with the players he inherited and the limited time he has had to get immediate results, it has been nigh-on impossible to conduct a complete overhaul - although they have certainly made decent strides in a positive direction.

When pressed further on the desire to replicate Huddersfield's success and even playing style, Morison added: "It's just everything. They have bought into a process with the manager they brought in.

STEVE MORISON:

"I think he was close to getting the sack at one point.

"Do we want to go in and nullify the other team the whole time? Or do we want to go and stamp our authority on a game? Of course we do, but that takes time.

"We haven't got time to start being really expansive and over the top with what we do and then stand on the side and say, 'Oh, it doesn't matter. We were trying it, but we lost.'

"It's more about getting a result and what suits the players we have got in the building.

"It's no surprise if I said we haven't got wingers. So we have to play in a certain way, because we haven't got those players to be able to start playing with two wide men, like Huddersfield did or like a Fulham will do on the weekend.

"A lot of what we do going forward will come through recruitment and change of personnel, having the ability to be able to play a three, play a four (at the back), play three up top, play two (up front).

"At the minute, we feel as a staff and as a team, because it's something we spoke about as a group, this is the best way for us to get results.

"Yes, we will have to sacrifice things at times, like the ball in some games, but then we will have games like Peterborough when you are on top and can dominate both sides of the game.

"It's just about being patient and realising there is a bigger picture to it."
