Wed Feb 16, 2022 10:13 am

I was their with My Grandfather on the Bob Bank at the age of 9, just stood watching continual missiles flying back abd for from both ends, outside, we had to stand by the wall and stay their for at least 30mins until the trouble went further away from Ninian Park.

I wasn’t at that match Ian, I had only just started watching Cardiff in 1972.

Definately the worst at a Cardiff game, ahead of the Chelsea games and the Crystal Palace v Swansea game(grange skins battering the jacks on the Bob Bank). This game is probably one of the worst cases of violence anywhere, let alone at a Cardiff game.Mayhem from early morning till deep into the evening, and the battle at Astey's was unbelievable!!

I usually stood behind the goal in the Grand End. I arrived 2 hours early to see the stadium was practically full already. Myself and my mates were forced to stand on the Bob Bank right on the corner to the Grand End. To my left on the Grand End corner were thousand of Cardiff fans taunting Leeds fans who were just behind me. The Leeds fans had just made their way from the back of the Bob Bank to confront the Cardiff hoard. They were well outnumbered.

All Leeds could do was sing "United United" while we taunted them with "Colchester Colchester". The season before Leeds got knocked out by Colchester 3-2 and was recorded the biggest shock in FA Cup history then. All of the sudden the Cardiff broke rank and it was like watching an Ant army coming down a hill. Thousands ran pass us and up to the Leeds who made their exit. We ended up being forced to watch the game from the half way line.

While waiting for the game to start a number of Leeds fans made their way onto the pitch. Fair play to then they were doing a good job mocking us. These days away fans consider it a victory by hiding away in a pub miles from the stadium. These Leeds fans were right in our faces on the pitch. this resulted in a reaction from us.

A couple of our lads made a beeline for a couple of isolated Leeds. They had a long City scarf that they both carried. They wrapped the scarf around one of the Leeds lads and forced hi into him into his mate. Then fisty cuffs started where everyone started cheering on the City lads. The Police being the snails they were in those days stepped in and escorted the lads across the pitch and into the tunnel. That was the best entertainment of the day.

Considering Leeds brought a big contingent all of them must have been escorted out of the ground. Leeds won the game 2-0 and when they scored you would have heard a pin drop. 50,000 were in that crowd, the following week it was back down to 10K ad Iwas back in my spot.

Great read, Cheers Ian.

Tank tops and flares - those were the days  - Love the picture of the granny(?) with curlers on outside her front door! Wouldn't want to mess with her ;)

For me it was the Chelsea match , if. Steward hadn't locked the gates at the Bob bank I genuinely think it could of been a Hillsborough

They then let Chelsea fans out at the end , then Cardiff fans then Chelsea , we were surrounded.

Took a battering

Think it was 80s

Millwall in 1976 wasn’t a picnic. The 2 sets of fans “agreed” to get out of the ground to have a chat.
Bricks coming onto Sloper Road from the top of the railway bridge.

Might well have been but was almost certainly the worst ever fashion at a Cardiff City match - those flares!

If you wore those flares in the rain the damp would creep up the legs until almost everything below the knee was soaking. Also tank tops were banned in school back then.

I was 11 and remember pleading with my father to take me to the game but having seen what went on I was pretty glad I stayed at home drinking Corona pop and reading my Scorcher comic.

Probably in terms of scale and numbers. I also remember the Millwall match in 76 outside the old cafe under the railway bridge. So many occasions in the 70s with no real segregation. But, most scared I have been was Wales vs Yugoslavia in 77(?). Horrible atmosphere, real mood of older fans encouraging younger ones and eventually it all kicked off. Could have been much worse.

Does anyone remember the City v Everton FA Cup tie of 1977 ? A big crowd exiting Ninian along Sloper Road when Everton fans started to bombard City fans from on high with stones from the railway line. A very scary experience.

I remember that United were a good side but I don't remember any trouble. The only time I was ever involved in trouble was after City's 1-0 win over Spurs in the 76/77 season. God knows how many of them attacked me but I was battered and bruised afterwards.

That was my first game at City, I was 11 and couldn’t believe the amount of violence that day, I was with a mate and his dad, the dad kept us behind for a bit waiting for it to die down, as we left all we could see was city fans chasing the Everton fans up and down the railway line, it was like something out of a keystone kops clip thinking back on it now, but at the time as an 11 yer old it was quite frightening, however I couldn’t wait to go back to the next game.
