About Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town Association Football Club is an English professional football club based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Founded on 15 August 1908, it entered the Football League in 1910. The team currently compete in the Championship, the second tier of English football.

Huddersfield became the first English club to win three successive English league titles in 1925–26. The first two league titles were won under manager and pioneer Herbert Chapman, who also led the team to an FA Cup win in 1922. They have been runners-up in the First Division thrice, and FA Cup runners-up four times. Town were the second team, after Blackpool, to have won all three divisional play-offs.

In the late 1950s, the club was managed by Bill Shankly, and featured Denis Law and Ray Wilson. Following relegation from the First Division in 1972, Huddersfield spent 45 years in the second, third and fourth tiers of English football, before returning to the top flight in 2017. They were relegated back to the Championship in 2019.

The team have played home games at the Kirklees Stadium since 1994, which replaced their former home of Leeds Road. The club colours of blue and white stripes were adopted in 1916. Their nickname "The Terriers" was taken in 1969. Huddersfield's current emblem is based on the town's coat of arms. The team have long-standing rivalries with nearby clubs Bradford City and Leeds United, with whom they contest the West Yorkshire derby.

Prediction - plus Paterson coming back ?

Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:56 am

Hudders 1 - City 3

When Sheff Weds get relegated which is looking more likely by the week - I wonder if Patterson will put in a transfer request and maybe Mick should put out the feelers about getting him back. I think he would be a McCarthy type player.

What is the latest team news?

Cardiff City will be without Joe Bennett after the left-back suffered a horrible ACL injury during the midweek win over Derby County.

The Bluebirds defender has been a mainstay all season and his loss will be a big blow. However, it will likely represent a run in the side for academy prospect Joel Bagan.

Lee Tomlin missed this week's under-23s action due to illness, so he will be unavailable again as he continues his recovery from a groin injury which has kept him out for most of the season.

Jordi Osei-Tutu is due back with the first-team squad next week after recovering from his hamstring problem, too.

Max Watters and Ciaron Brown missed the midweek game with the Rams as they each played a full 90 minutes for the under-23s against Charlton on Monday, but they are now both back in contention.

Isaac Vassell is still missing, though.

For Huddersfield:

former Bluebirds striker Danny Ward will be missing with a calf injury. He has played a full match just once for the Terriers all season, the 3-0 defeat by Cardiff back in December.

Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Carel Eiting (knee), Jonathan Hogg (calf), Josh Koroma (hamstring), Christopher Schindler (knee) and Harry Toffolo (back) will all also miss the clash.

Match facts:

In all competitions, Huddersfield are winless in 14 meetings with Cardiff (D4 L10) since a 1-0 victory in the third tier in January 2003 under Mick Wadsworth.

Cardiff have won three of their last four league visits to Huddersfield (D1), as many as their previous 33 such trips beforehand (W3 D9 L21).

Huddersfield are looking to defeat both Cardiff and Swansea in the same league season for the first time since 1994-95, having beaten Swansea 4-1 in February.

Cardiff have won none of their last nine away league games played on a Friday (D4 L5) since a 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in December 2012.

This will be Mick McCarthy’s 1000th career game as a manager, including both club (922 inc. this match) and internationals (78 games).
