A forum for all things Cardiff City

Cardiff City yesterday signed Jonny Williams on a FREE (not what some of the media put out).
City took the injury prone midfielder contract over from Feb 1st till May at £50,000 (just over 3mths).
Jonny Williams wanted to come to Cardiff and wanted to play for his old manager Big Mick McCarthy and as Jonny Williams said "I played my best ever football under Mick McCarthy at Ipswich Town."
Williams had been a semi-regular starter for the Addicks this term and netted two goals for the League One side.
Jonny Williams through the years has averaged 14 games a season( many as sub).
My View:
Was it a risk, my honest view, I cant fault Big Mick as for me we virtually cant lose especially after all the Committee have wasted over these years, not thousands but £millions.
A brilliant signing for his wages by City in my opinion
Well worth the gamble in my opinion & a bargain
JONNY WILLIAMS: "I'M FIT & RARING TO GO."

On paper a Welsh bargain..

Averaging about 14 games a season, he should have bags of energy..

Definitely a gamble but worth risking.
I've seen Williams play a few times and he can be a handful on his day. Lets hope we see a few of those hands.

I would say bargain and worth a punt. We need a change to our midfield. The Sunderland til I die documentary section on him is revealing. He's definitely an 'arm around the shoulder' player and maybe McCarthy has got that father figure way of motivating him. If he plays 14 good games for us and keeps us up, he will certainly be a bargain.

So, to clarify, is Williams a free agent at the end of the season then ?

It's an interesting transfer, Jonny Williams on a short term deal to give us a bit of quality up front while we climb the table. Jonny Williams long term will be a replacement for Wilson when his loan ends? Especially if MM stays after this season.

all his stats are much poorer than who we have here, my concern is Mick will play him ahead of better players..

Lee bowyer stated it was a good deal for them?,if it’s true,we just paying his contract, how is that a good deal for charlton?

I like the guy but I can't see him being anything other than a 20 minute impact option off the bench.

On 4 January 2019, Williams joined Charlton Athletic on a contract until the end of the season. This ended his 17 year association with Crystal Palace.[20] He made 16 appearances for the club for the rest of the season, helping the club to achieve promotion to the Championship, defeating former loan club Sunderland in the play-off final.
Despite this he was released by Charlton at the end of the 2018–19 season.[21] However on 18 July 2019, Williams rejoined the club on a one year deal, with the option of an additional 12 months.[22] In October 2019 he underwent knee surgery.[23] He scored his first goal for Charlton in a 2-0 win over Portsmouth on 31 October 2020.[24]

This may be a novel idea, but let's give the boy a chance?

The issue with our midfield is that they are all similar. They are disruptive players who offer little creativity. Williams definitely offers something different. As long as he isnt played instead of wilson, I wouldnt have an issue with him replacing 1 of our midfield 3....if he can stay fit. Allows us to rotate the CMs as well.

I’m lost for words. First MM. Now this. Ffs.

think thats my point mate...we have signed a creative player that creates less chances, scores less goals , has less assists and wins less free kicks than what you call our disruptive players....he wasnt not getting in at Charlton because he is creative... in fact Bowyer has commented a number times of his frustration at Jonnys LACK of goals , assists and creativity.. flatters to deceive and has done for 10 years...
as said above my concern is Mick will play him ahead of better players and cost us dearly.... if the boy had done any of the above well even if 5 or 6 years ago..id buy it... but he hasnt.. and on top of that he doesnt tackle or intercept often is very lightweight and generally is blowing out of his behind before the hour mark... so its swap less tackles less defensively minded ..for...also less creativity.....

Let’s be honest...our midfield is Bollux so to have a worker there, someone who has passion I really welcome.
Never had so much welsh contingency..lol
I like the thought of OJo, Tomlin With Jonny wider and Wilson in the 10 role...
Tue Feb 02, 2021 9:41 pm
Good bit of business in my opinion.Knowing our luck he will play well and someone else will nab him off us.

I tend to see him this way too but he could be a very good off the bench player running at the opposition and wining free kicks around their penalty area. As some have said he gives us something different. Mick has seen him play plenty so he knows what he can do we need to trust his judgment on this. If it is wrong it hasn't cost us much. My slight worry is although Charton fans like his attitude they don't seem at all bothered about him going don't think it will make any difference to there season.

Mick loaned him 4 times for Ipswich.. made a total of 16 starts and 12 apps as sub over the 4 loans.. but did score 2 of his career 5 goals there...

Nah! more likely with our luck he will play well, we offer him a long term contract, and he spends the next few years in the treatment room. I’m happy to have here though, and think it’s a good bit of business.

Short term contract and not costing much money.
It's as close to risk free as you'll get in professional football.
Happy with the deal and if he does well he will earn a longer term contract, as is the case with the manager.
Not sure that anyone can make a legitimate case for it not being a good deal.

My beef is not so much with Williams but that we're still lightweight up front (if Moore gets injured) and at RB.
WTF is happening at our club? It's being run by clowns
