Reports that Watford are set to sign Joe Bennett for between £1m to £1.5m.

Joe Bennett
Cardiff City's Championship rivals Watford are reportedly interested in signing Joe Bennett this week.
Sky Sports now report that Watford, who were relegated from the Premier League last season and are doubtless trying to reinforce their squad to mount another promotion charge, are keen on taking him to Vicarage Road.
The Athletic report that the player would cost around £1.5m.
The Bluebirds do not want to lose any more players without replacing them, but are well-stocked in the left-back department.
They have Bennett and Republic of Ireland international Greg Cunningham within their ranks. However, the two men will be over 30 years of age and out of contract next summer.
Harris, too, has spoken fondly of academy prospect Joel Bagan in recent months and many insiders believe the 18-year-old can be a player who can graduate into the first team. But they would ideally like for that to happen next season, rather than in this campaign.
The domestic transfer window shuts at 5pm on Friday, October 16 and it remains to be seen if Watford come in with an official bid that is suitable to Cardiff.
Bennett was previously wanted by the Bluebirds' promotion rivals Fulham and appeared on the brink of leaving, but he chose to stay with Cardiff.
Seen it on sky sports how much do you think he would go for

Surprised at this.

Not been overly impressive last couple years more of a steady player are we getting value for his wage bill in the current climate

Great left back. £1.5m is a steal. Terrible business if we sell.

Knowing Cardiff they would want 900k just to get his wages off the books. I personally would sell him for £2.5 Million but selling him would be the very least I would do unless there is a player to replace him already. I love Joe to stay at our club and selling him would be painful not just for fans and the team themselves but for Joe who seems settled at Cardiff.

Decent player but seen better days

Only worth what anyone is prepared to pay..
Mon Oct 12, 2020 6:56 pm
At his age might be tempted to sell for 2 million will be on good wages

I would sell him for anything over £2mill and buy a midfielder
Cunningham is arguably a better left back anyway and we also have plenty of temporary cover for that position. Right back is more of a issue.
Hes been a good servant to the club and is a good player but he's not a world beater and is replaceable without spending a lot of money.

Cunningham could well be on same wages or even more mate as we signed him when we got to the Prem.

Always a liability and caught out of position and finger points blame at everyone else. Can’t pass or cross a decent ball.
Mon Oct 12, 2020 9:21 pm
No probs, Cunningham will do. 1 mill with addons if they go up
Mon Oct 12, 2020 9:32 pm
Our weak link last year ,let him go

I don’t want Bennet to go but Cunningham was one of the best left backs in the league before his injury so we aren’t in to bad a position. The problem is the overall strength of the squad is going down massively the more we sell and either don’t replace or replace on the cheap.

Id drive him there myself lockdown permitting.poor distribution and always caught out of position.

Unfortunately in the current conditions players who are on high wages will not command a big fee as once was the case.
The selling club will look at how much they will be paying a player over a period of time and put it against a realistic fee.
The PL might be able to sustain stupid amounts of money for players however from the Championship down the future will see smaller fees and less wages for players. The time players ruled the roost has gone.
There will be lots of players struggling to get employed including big names as their wage demands will no longer be met.
So £1.5m for Bennett would be a realistic fee.

I expected either him or cunningham to go at the start of the season. Both solid defenders who wouldn't be happy sat on the bench. Both on decent wages as well.
Cunningham is more than capable as first choice so wouldn't be too disappointed if Bennett left. Only concern is we would have get a replacement in before Friday as cover.

I wonder what the player makes of it?
Seemed quite settled in Cardiff and as said he turned down a move to Fulham previously so I wonder if it's another Marshall situation where the player is being sold against his wishes, perhaps being told that any new contract in the future would be on lower wages?
Or maybe he's seen the writing on the wall at Cardiff and decided that his chances of promotion would be much improved at Watford?

He leaves now and he gets another 2-3 years on a similar/improved contract to what he's on now, a nice sign on bonus and realistically a better shot at promotion and all the salary bonuses that go with it. Hes 30years old now so probably his last opportunity at a big pay out. Or he stays with us and accepts a lower salary with us or another team next season. Personally think he'd be mad not to want to go to be honest.

We have got to be pretty busy in the next day or two just to replace what we scrapped otherwise what we got is not going to get us through a long championship season thats why other clubs are building there squads with x cardiff.

its a decent point...and doesnt just effect Joe...any player staying with the club he is currently at is unlikely to be offered an extended contract as things stand and even less likely to be offered one on improved terms.. where as if you are head hunted you can secure your future without fans and even the club chairman { who has just agreed the move } going on about you taking a cut in wages..

Bennett has been a great left back. He still has a good few seasons left in him, doesn’t get to many injuries. He’s been consistently a good performer for us, proven by the fact he’s started so regularly under different managers. It would cost us more than £1.5M plus his wages to replace him with someone younger with potential. Amazed people are saying Cunningham is better. He’s done absolutely nothing for us since he signed. Wouldn’t be surprised he’s on wages not fat off Bennett’s. I think Cunningham is better than he’s show but how long do we have to wait. Like Murphy, he’s failed to live up to expectations.
If Bennett won’t sign a new contact on reduced term (not many teams will be offering improved terms for senior players) then I guess we have to sell but selling for £1.5M to a rival isn’t great.

I like Joe and he has been a good servant to the club but we don't need him and Cunningham. One if them needs to go and it is a buyers market so if there is interest at a reasonable price the club should let him go. As someone else posted is his last chance for a decent payout as well.
