For me Ian,like you we have seen owners come and go since the early 70's.

But I will put these 6 in order of how I rate them and just a quick paragraph by each.

!. Sam Hammam / Woke the sleeping Giant(Cardiff City) up and came in when we were rock bottom and no one else would, made mistakes along the way and has admitted he did. Some say left us in debt, but we were in debt when he bought us and had no assests, once Sam left we had a debt, but our squad and outline planning out wade the debt. We went up from League 4 to the Top of the Championship under Sam, Crowds went up from 4,000 to 20,000m what Ninian Park held and he modernised Ninian Park.

2. Rick Wright / United our fans and made watching Cardiff City in the lower leagues unbelievable happy times, but could not take us anymore forward.

3. Vincent Tan / could of been our greatest ever owner after two promotions to the Premier League, but stripped our club of its identity & pride and to this day turned fans against each other sadly maliciously on some occasions. Put money in our club, but wasted so much due to No knowledge of football and we have not gone forward due to this. Tan paid nearly £6mill for us just before the play off final v Blackpool, gambled, but not really gambled as he for that agreed the debts, but inherited a stadium worth £60mill and a healthy squad of players. We were odds on fav for Prem league, which could of netted £100mill.

4. Tony Clemo / many disliked him as they said he took money from our club and had no ambition, totally wrong, Clemo invested but our crowds were so low in them days no matter what we did in the old 2nd div (Chamionship) Clemo could never go forward with home crowds of 4,000-5,000 witn no ther monies coming in.

5. Steve Borley / tried his best, but never had real funds and was way out of depth.

6. Peter Ridsdale / got the stadium finally done, but wasted beyond money and put our club in debt beyond.

7. Kumar Brothers / pure conmen, from day one. Even sowed their own sponsor in their factories over old sponsors and put them on sale. Put no money in the club, fans were united on getting rid of them.

Thanks to Eastleigh Blue for that list.

Now I would like to here from anyone what there feelings are on the owners that have been around while supporting Cardiff City:

1964-1972 Fred Dewey - Blamed for leading a board with no ambition. Sold Toshack

1972-1975 David Goldstone - Did nothing for the club

1975-1977 Stefan Terlezki - More of a politician

1977-1983 Bob Grogan - Know very little about

1983-1986 Jack Leonard - Know very little about

1986-1992 Tony Clemo Know little about

1992-1995 Rick Wright - Very popular guy but had no real clout to push the club forward

1995-1999 Samesh Kumar - Conman

1999-2000 Steve Borley - Saved the club going down but was not the guy to take us to the top, little finance

2000-2007 Sam Hammam - Best owner yet and sad he could not finish the job off.

2007-2010 Peter Ridsdale/PMG - One of those combinations that will keep your club above water but at a big cost usually to their advantage.

2010-Present Vincent Tan - Had the chance to become a top legend but blew any chance of that with the hated Rebrand.

Re: ' Cardiff City Owners '

Someone has forgotten possibly one of the worst...? Jim Cadman?? Tried to turn it Into a business with no money...

I started supporting the City in 1974. Without a doubt the top 3 in reverse order were, Rick Wright, Bob Grogan, but for me there is no denying that Sam Hammam was the first EVER owner who I believed could turn us into the team I had dreamed of. And he stands out as Cardiff City's best owner.

Without Sam, we could very easily be where Wrexham are now. Sam had a dream; sold it to the fans and pursued it vigorously. We were nothing. Absolutely nothing, Sam changed all that.

Sam was denied the chance to take us to the Premier League. Had he had that chance, his dream would have become a reality. I believe Thats when he would have really flexed his muscle.

I for one am sad How things turned out with Sam, but I'd bite your hand off to get Sam back, and make us THE only team worth supporting in Wales.....

Re: ' Cardiff City Owners '

for me our worst owners were the Kumars as just took took from our club and achived nothing and best Sam as he took us all the way up from nothing to the top of the Championship :bluebird: :bluebird:

Jim Cadman, Cardiff chief exec, left, with Michael Boyce, Cardiff chairman and Brian Simpson, centre, of Windmill Printing and design who donated the original 1927 Cup Final programme to the club

Remember When Rick Wright had a pay on the gate price for where we were in the league, higher we were if went up and the lower it went down.
Don’t know how season tickets faired tho.

My top three:

1- Vincent Tan

Saved us financially when he took over and we were on the brink of collapse due to previous chairman's financial mismanagement.
Has overseen the most successful period in the clubs history on the pitch.
Pumped in multi millions into the squad and club as a whole.
Hired some of the best and biggest name managers we've ever had including Warnock and Solskjaer.
Broke our transfer record multi times with fees in excess of £10mill.
Over saw the upgrade of our new stadium with the new stand.
Presently has us in the best position financially that we have been in decades
Has pretty much kept every promise he has made to the fans including making good the one mistake he made regarding the rebrand

2. Ridsdale

Did the impossible by keeping this club going long enough to find a buyer after taking it over with massive debt and financial issues.

It was a bumpy ride with him but he got the job done and allowed us to keep trading and be competitive on the pitch.

Made mistakes along the way but in reality it was needed.

3. Sam Hamman

Started a short period of success then left us in huge trouble financially with unmanageable debt for years until Vincent tan arrived and put everything right.

The others were small time club owners who never really made much of a impression. Rick Wright maybe more than others. The club before the turn of the millennium was small fry for years.

Re: ' Cardiff City Owners '

Sat Oct 10, 2020 2:40 pm

This is a great thread and bound to divide opinion of the best and worst of City Chairmen/owners

For what it's worth, here are mine good and bad...

Top 5:

1: Sam Hammam

Love or loathe, he started the current success

2: Vincent Tan

Saved our club and took us to the Premier League for the first time in 50+ years and twice to date

3: Rick Wright

Showed what was possible and kept his word but sadly no one listened, so he kept to his word

4: Bob Grogan

City were on the rise under him and finally the future looked bright until his sad and premature death

5: Walter Parker

Oversaw what was arguably City's best ever period of an FA Cup win, another final, Division One runners up by the tightest ever margin of 0.02 of a goal and a Charity Shield win

Bottom 5:

1: Jim Cadman

Many will right ask "Who...?" and that would just about sum him up!

2: Jack Leonard

His Kenton Utilities group undone all the hard work of his predecessor, Bob Grogan, and they left City high, dry and clinging on fur dear life)

3: Fred Dewey

Led the Board that sold Toshack in my first full season and cost the club promotion without shadow of doubt

4: The Kumar Brothers

Came in full of talk and hope after their work at Birmingham City but achieved little before leaving it all to Joan Hill (she was okay IMHO) to hand over to the next trier

5: Mehmet Dalman

Current Chairman rather than owner and a man who blows smoke up supporters backsides with his carefully chosen rhetoric rather than complete openness and honesty

Note: No room for The Riddler on either list, as he simply did his best in very trying circumstances and (by the skin of his teeth) found a saviour in Vincent Tan; albeit via TG

Thomas blue what are you talking about ?. Tan shut the club down for 2and half years .most successful period in its history lol. That was 1920s and half of the 1950s .most of the rest has been mediocre lower league shite.

I was just going to put up a poll asking that same question but I realized have no idea how to do it so if anyone would care to do so I would appreciate it

1920s
1950s
2010s

Thanks

1920s for me.

You are talking about nearly a century ago. Even then it was a
league runners up medal and a fa Cup win mixed with a few Welsh Cup wins

Tan has over seen us:

Championship winners
Championship runners up
Fa Cup finalists
League Cup finalists
Play off finalists
Play off contenders 3 times

Actually your right , what the hell am I on about because 1 Cup win 90+ years ago is better than our clubs recent successes.

He never shut the club down you just disagreed with a decision he made which was wrong. He made good on that mistake in the years since

Not sure why you mentioned the 50s that was a few years in the top flight.

1999-2000 Steve Borley

2000/8 Sam Hamman

2008/10 Peter Ridsdale/PMG

2010 - Present Vincent Tan

Ha ha no bias in those paragraphs at all. Love it.

Neil, just honesty , prob shocked you me making Tan No 3, many would of thought I would say last.

Where is your comments on all of them?

Or just another dig at me?

Stop being so sensitive hardly a dig.

But it’s massively biased against Tan and pro Sam. But that’s fine Sam is a good friend of yours. I would expect nothing less from someone as loyal as you are.

The club last won a major trophy in 1927 had a top 10 finish in the top flight in 1954 . Tan got Cardiff red promoted finished bottom got bluebirds promoted finished bottom. If you think that's success I'm glad your so easily pleased.

Sam quite clearly got us going and invested more than he intended which I think was because he caught the bug. Towards the end he was quite divisive. Maybe even before that with the coach loads of fans he took to Mansfield. However it can’t be argued that we all enjoyed the ride. Anyone who says differently is a liar. It’s my favourite period supporting Cardiff. For all the good of being one of a couple of hundred it was much better being one of a couple of thousand.

Improved us massively on the pitch and improved Ninian Park but when he left we were still at Ninian Park and he couldn’t deliver the stadium without help which was his downfall and people took advantage of his desperation. He had also sold most of our biggest assets by the time he left.

Raised our profile considerably however I think it was the FA Cup Final that really raised our profile so that the Malaysians got interested. However we wouldn’t have got to an FA Cup Final without the momentum started under Sam.

I think he left us better off as we were an established second tier side and we were top of the league when he was ousted but we knew that wasn’t going to stay like that without investment.

The Riddler also caught the bug a bit and Probably was instrumental in delivering the stadium. However, as he did at Leeds, he paid for today by taking what he hoped was part of tomorrow’s money. When that became all of tomorrow’s money it meant we would end up in court. In many ways though we became a lot more professional under the Riddler despite his constant lies to the fans/players/high court etc.

Tan started amazingly saving the club. Then got the bug I think and got carried away with the red. That was the most divisive act in the history of the club. I honestly don’t think he meant to offend the fans though. My thoughts on this are well documented. The real kickback from the thousands started when we started losing. Most were quiet when we were winning the second tier.

Has made a lot of mistakes as he has been very badly advised. If he and Sam could work together I think it could be a dream ticket. Shame it never will.

He has corrected his one massive mistake and we have made undoubted strides on and off the pitch. When the training centre is complete it will match the stadium as a huge asset on the books. He has also promoted to make us debt free and has not given me a reason to doubt that he will do that.

It’s not the roller coaster that it was under Sam but we aren’t selling our captain to other teams to pay the wages or in the high court every month for unpaid debts like we were so for that I appreciate Tan.

We are a solid championship club now.

Tan our best owner by a mile!
then Sam for seeing we had the potential to be a big club (bigger than Barcelona!) but didn’t put his own money into our club!

I picked Wright over Ridsdale partly due to sentiment as it was one of my fave eras of supporting city.
