Neil Warnock: Middlesbrough boss warns of Covid-19 danger after recovering from coronavirus - BBC Sport

BBC

Thursday 1st October 2020

Neil Warnock was appointed as Middlesbrough boss in the closing weeks of last season
Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock wants the public to fully appreciate the seriousness of coronavirus, having recovered from the illness.

Warnock, 71, had to self-isolate away from the Championship club for 14 days after he tested positive for Covid-19.

The government has brought in tougher lockdown restrictions in the north east in response to a rising number of cases in the region.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"It's life and death with this horrible virus," Warnock said.

"That's why it annoys me when I see 200 kids having a party. It's not so much what's happening in their vicinity, it's what's going to happen in the wider area when they go and speak to somebody else and somebody else.

"They must have grandparents and parents that are older and have got problems. There's just not enough thought going on at times in certain areas, which disappoints me at the moment."

Warnock will return to the dugout for Saturday's game against Barnsley, having watched his side draw two games from afar.

"I was very fortunate I didn't get anything on my chest," Warnock added. "I just started with a little niggly throat and then lost my sense of smell and taste, and for the first few days (I was) absolutely shattered and wanting to go to sleep every minute of the day.

"You've got no option but to look after yourself. My son was with me as well, so he had to isolate as well, so it was strange.

"I didn't feel too bad (about being absent for) the games, if I'm honest, because I had conversations before, half-time and at the end, but it's nice to get back on the grass. It's always nice to have contact with your players and start talking about how you see the next game, etc."

What's with the fans turning on him? And the laughing smiley quote all about mate? You saying that's not true? Because that's exactly what happened.

The fans did turn on him 100%, the word 'turn' can be interpreted in many ways but when he went there were not that many complaints and most people thought his time was done.

I'm fact lots of people thought he should have gone the year we got promotedand NW also said he would go when he felt he was no longer wanted on a few occasions

I'm not saying any of these things are right but they are facts nonetheless.

I agree mate I don't think it was a majority but with these sorts of things it's always the discontented whos voices seem louder.

After we went down there was def a turn amongst the fans and then those two games against Swansea and Bristol City turned more against him and he walked the day after the Wurzels defeat. I reckon at that point after the shocking performance against the Jack's two weeks before and the defeat against the Wurzels the support amongst the fans for stay or go was about 50/50 and he knew it was time to go.

Re: “ NEIL WARNOCK “

Warnock was backed financially and things didn't work out. The football was shit and we were heading to the wrong end of the table. The fans had a good reason not to be happy with him. Him leaving was the correct decision as harris took us from 14th to 5th.

Quite ironic that the people who moaned about fans turning on warnock and hounding him out of the club are bashing harris left, right and centre

Glad he's recovered and wish him all the best at Boro - exept when he plays us of course.

It was certainly not the majority ! Don't recall any "warnock out" chants at either of them games you mention.
Secondly, if it's the calls of the discontented are heard the loudest, how is tan still here?

He had wrung every last drop out of the squad he could, saw it was no longer working, and walked away.To say he left because of some fans turning on him,I saw no evidence of fans turning, except on here, and if he walked because of a fans forum,I'd be dissapointed in him.
Anyway, glad he has returned to fitness,no doubt his hectic lifestyle at 70,helped him physically. :old: :bluebird:

I'm not getting into an argument with any of you about it, I never said it was the majority quote clearly in all my posts but there were a lot of people in our fan base wanted him gone.

As I said the word 'turn' can be interpreted in many ways but I can tell you with absolute certainly that when I walked out of Craven Cottage the talk amongst the fans was generally he's lost it and its time to go. That only grew stronger in the new season, there might not have been any Warnock out chants as fans still respected him but that didn't mean they didn't want him gone. If you don't think that's the truth then you either didn't go to games or had your heads stuck in the sand.

At the end of the day Warnock did not leave his job because the fans were posting on a forum nor because fans were moaning amongst themselves.
He knew his time was up he was struggling with an overpriced squad he assembled and walked before getting the boot.
He did us well and im glad he's better after his illness.

Thats how I see it as well. Definitely agree about the Fulham game. I was there and, like many, was absolutely fuming for days after that game. That was a game we should have took to Fulham and won. They were shit. Seemed warnock went there with a must not lose approach though and we only started having a go after they scored and it was too late.

When it was announced he was staying i was 50:50 on the decision. Especially after all the Burnley model bullshit he and the club came out with. Caught between thinking who better to get us promoted again and that we should use two seasons of parachute payments to go in a different direction. Clearly didnt workout with warnock staying but that was the gamble the club took. Now we are stuck in an awkward place of having a limited squad, trying to change that but having to cost cut at the same time.

Don't agree that he was hounded out of the club (not your words) though due to what fans were saying on a forum. He knew it was time to go so he walked before he was pushed. I think people need to move on.

Name me 6 managers with that many games under their belts, in fact make it easy for the slaters, name 2?

indeed, but he is not stupid.. and as chairman knew we had downgraded.. as the whole world bar a few with extreme expectations knew... we sold reid and Zohore who arnt exactly superstars and didnt even leave for a higher level { which really should spell it out } and funded a complete rebuild out of the money. the Burnley model ? ... was mentioned ..yes a do it on the cheap model.. only ours was cheap ER and required a much greater change in personnel , outside of our club.. people i talk to are bemused by the ridiculous expectations and the Warnock out campaign... as were many of my Cardiff supporting friends.. no doubt Dalman hoped we would be doing better, i did, but the expectation from the loonies...waw..

1500 games and 40 years tells you he knows when to say "goodbye".

All recruitment whether that be a manager or player is a gamble, every time. Neil hit the jackpot in the first two season far more often than not.

Last season the transfers which on paper should have worked just didn't. He probably looked at the assembled squad and thought "bollox this is going to take some cash and more importantly time to sort out" and i want my xxth promotion and this lot won't be doing that, I am off.

There was no hounding, the fanatical adulation he had got very used to was a little muted in those last few games, but that is all.

Its one of life's skills knowing when to leave the party, My Warnock has that.

I think the perception that people are against Warnock is when there is the constant criticism of Tan (on here especially) who backed Neil and a lot of those transfer haven't worked. Shit happens, but with covid we have to clean up.

He was getting replaced whether he wanted to stay or not. So yea he quit before he had to leave.

He wanted to leave before things soured-his words not mine. They are not words of manager who thinks he can turn things around. Like all managers there comes a time when change is needed. He was great manager for us but it was definitely time for him to leave. That doesn't mean people didn't appreciate what he did for us though.

no idea why people are making out there was a very embarrassing and quite vicious anti Warnock campaign... it happened..
as for backed...im certainly not anti Tan . but that does not mean im going to say black is white either.. backing to me means improving.. not down grading.. if you look at the 3 promoted sides last season then look at how many we lost and replaced inadequately..well..2 of them even bought players off us.

One thing bugs me about modern day footbal besides the fact they are treat us like cash cows; and it is the word bounce effect.

Never mind how good a job you've done in the last 18 months if you have some ropey results you rarely get a chance to ride it out and come out the other end . Directors always looking for a new toy to throw to the players or fans for bounce. Ffs......
