Premier League? I’m not bothered...

Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:03 pm

Am I the only one?

Genuinely not bothered about promotion this season, I’m enjoying being in the top 6 with everything to play for, but the prospect (especially with our current squad) of being the whipping boys next year doesn’t excite me....

In my opinion, we are a similar sized club to Wolves or Leicester, but we haven’t got access to their levels of investment, so our budget next season would be far more similar to Norwich or Bournemouth.....

I would honestly prefer to playing at the top level of the Championship with a decent cup run, than getting hammered by Liverpool, Man City etc every week next season...

If by some miracle we get promoted, we’d need 8 or 9 players and would simply be looking for those 38/39 points all season long......

Agree dude but love the roller coaster

When I started watching Cardiff in the late 70s we would struggle to score

Never mind win.

To see us in the premier league last season for the first time (I don't include the red dabacle), was something when I was following us in the dungeon years ie Rochdale, Torquay, bury, Oxford, Maidstone etc i thought i would never see.

Fa cup final
Carling cup final
Was absolutely amazing to

So for me whatever happens now I'm happy.

I tend to agree with what you say. But there are loads of clubs, including a lot in Europe I'd say, who'd sell their grannies to play in the Premier League which is one of the best leagues in the world.
We've had 2 goes at it and I have to say the novelty wears off when you're getting mullered by the lower end clubs, never mind the so called top 6. There's the odd moments of course, but all in all the championship is a cracking league and another season there is no great shame.

Totally,

It's all memories

First away win in Prem at Leicester was a memory il cherish forever.

Don,

I don't think the Prem is the best league in the World. It's the richest. That's all.

We got half a dozen huge clubs. The rest are just glad to be there and reaping the financial rewards.

The best league is the Championship.

Couple of reasons to go up, the Sala money, and cash for the next couple of seasons after relegation. Unless the club invests to stay up, it’s pretty pointless for us and the players.

I think the last sentence sums it up really.

It's highly unlikely that there would be any meaningful investment in the playing side of the club if we went up. The players that were with us last year have proven that although they give everything they've got unfortunately they're just not good enough to keep us in the Premier League and none of this years signings have done anything to suggest that they would be able to cope at a higher level.

The gap between the teams in the top half of the Premier League and the bottom half is growing all the time and like last time we'd really be looking to get enough points to survive from about 26 games with the rest of the games really being write offs before a ball is kicked.

The money would definitely help with the outstanding debts though!

I've not particularly enjoyed either season we went up bar some exceptions (Leicester away, Bournemouth/West Ham home and a couple others) but during the current situation and the financial issues a lot of clubs are predicted to have getting promoted would be huge to keeping the club competitive over the next few years and in the long run, 5+ years, could give us a decent advantage over the majority of championship clubs.
I would happily see us win the play offs and finish 20th next season as I think overall it will be advantageous for the club

Hate the whole premier League thing so much I gave up my ticket when we've been there.
The diving, The tantrums, The obscene wages, Same few teams winning every year gets boring imo, Top end Championship and have a good FA cup run for me all day.
Saying that although back in the day we were crap there's not many who can say they didn't enjoy it back then. :ayatollah:

Tend to agree with all that’s been written. Someone once said to me if we could win the Championship but stay in the Championship the following season he’d be happy. However, we could really do with the money that comes from being in the Premiership next season as it looks the crowds and the money they bring to the club willI be missing again next season.

As long as we finish above the Jacks I'm happy.

Championship next year with some exciting players and possibly bring through some academy products too.

Been watching/supporting the Bluebirds longe than I care to remember; mainly through thin and thin...

But foremost in my mind doing all the dark days that seemed to accompany my unerring support, I wanted my club to be playing in the top division against teams only ever saw on Match of the Day

With today's Sky-infested schedules (sometimes it works in our favour but mainly it's put me off watching as religiously as I might have in the past) it may be hard to understand when I say that part of growing up was dreaming of watching my team on MotD, a decent cup run (we seemed to have plenty of those) and avoiding the standard school joke on a Monday morning, i.e. "I don't know why you bother to go watch that sh**e, they never come to see you wen you're bad...!"

It's a Knockout before the FA Cup Final was always a highlight, too! :laughing6:

Latterly, since Sam thankfully instigated the modernisation of our football club, we have (tax issue apart) had it pretty good and for us to be moaning we're not embedded in the play-off places after one defeat in five, is a sign of our actual progress

Bring on the Premier League I say; it's where any ambitious club and its supporters should want to be! :ayatollah:

Well I’m bothered.

I see absolutely no point whatsoever in not trying to get as high as you possibly can. Be that in playing or watching football.

I see absolutely no point in being happy treading water be it in 6th place or mid table.

The OP may be happy but I think it’s a nonsense just staying where we are and happy plodding along with zero ambition.

I agree with what you say, it isn't that exciting getting hammered every week. Just to pick up on the Bournemouth comparison, I think you'll find they have invested heavily over the years to be where they are

I do agree, without ambition what's the point

But

Watching us week in week out getting smashed last year was not pleasant.

Without money, the top 10 in prem is out of our reach for a good few years

But, bring some young blood through, build a team of youngsters who are 100% dedicated

Harris, look at our youth set up, scouting system, without that being improved we have no chance, unless
MR Moneybags buys us.

And a mid table ish prem side we could be if we sort the youth, scouting system,

give our youth a chance and it is attainable

Ps dont forget I had the worst life ever ever ever ever ever :D :D :bluescarf:

The whole point is to try and be the best, which means being in the best division which is the Premier League, even if/when it feels unrealistic, the dream is still there?

I want to see us play in Europe, do I think that's achievable, absolutely.

Stoke, Burnley, Bolton, Wigan and some other small team I forget their name have been there so why not us.

Who would have though Leicester would go on to do what they did and become what they are that night we beat them in that Play Off Semi Final.

If I ever feel like I wasn't bothered if we went up or not I'd probably stop going.

Each to their own though,

Depends how its done really.. to survive without investment requires a possession game, which we dont fully play. I just remember seeing the Players faces last 6-7 games(especially Morrison for some reason), and regularly getting done by better players was taking its toll..because to be fair the players did work their knackers off, notably Arter.

I don’t mean I never want us to go up, but this season with the current squad would definitely be a challenge for any manager...Leeds, West Bromwich & Fulham all have squads capable with a couple of additions, of surviving in the Premier, we would have no chance.....

Supporting City for me was never about expecting us to win, TBH when I 1st starting going in 85 we were shocking for most of that time but we all look back fondly on those times now....

It’s not that I haven’t got ambition for the club, of course I want to see us play at the top level, as long as we ain’t getting tubbed every week by clubs with 20x our budget....

Re: Premier League? I’m not bothered...

No the premier league and winning trophies is not for cosy little Cardiff. Its for footballs powerhouses like Swansea Bournemouth and Wigan.
I can imagine you all wetting yourselves with anticipation with the prospect of the visit of either oxford or Wycombe rather than Liverpool or Manchester United.

Doesnt matter if we have a Mickey mouse team getting promotion is the holy grail no matter what league you are in for any club or player..... people saying we are better off staying in championship certainly don't understand what promotion means to a club or player .. what's point of playing if happy to be stuck in a particular league not wanting promotion because think not good enough? If you get promoted you were good enough thats it..

i totally get where your coming from because i had so little enthusiasm for some games last season...having said that.. 1985 ? means youve seen us have 4 or 5 lower league relegations and a few bottom 4 finishes in the bottom division... think maybe the good seasons are more memorable than the crap ones which was most of the time...i know they are for me ..but maybe being tanked by Manchester aint so bad as being tanked by Maidenhead ?

Re: Premier League? I’m not bothered...

One of the few things Sam Hamman said that made sense was that getting to the Premier league would be more fun than being there.

Think you need to take your chances in life when they come and we do have a chance again now that none of us thought we would though I'm not going to lose any sleep if we don't.

The football, even just on the TV, has been a welcome from all the covid stuff.

There does only need to be three teams worse than us to survive a PL season and then there is a chance to consolidate.

And as someone has said, we are as likely to get beaten at home by Wycombe on a wet Tuesday night in November as by either Manchester side.

The real plus of chamionship is four more games most of which under the lights
