Worst ever signing?

Thu Jan 09, 2020 5:49 pm

For me Madine must be our worst ever signing; paid 6 mill, zero goals returned and then subsequently released.

With the fee involved, as well as his wages and the amount of game time he had (enough to score at least a goal), I think he goes down as our worst ever signing.

Cornelius from the top of my head would be the best challenger. However, he didn't get much game time, we did get some kind of return when he left and was used as a bit of a scapegoat.

Whose yours?

Madine for me, I don't even know how he made it as professional footballer.

What fee did we get for Cornelius again?

My vote would be for Acorn

Really? We signed Cornelius for just under 8 million and got 3 million back for him. He was here for around 6 months in total.

We paid 6 million for Madine and got nothing back. He was here for around 18 months.

I'd say the financial hit on Madine is likely to be larger, he played roughly 3x more than Cornelius and provided the exact same goal return, including a missed penalty.

Madine did play a part in some goals, like Bacuna’s this season against Stoke for one. Acorn was hardly on the pitch to play any part...

6 months he was on loan to Sheffield utd tho and they paid his wages and we got a loan fee coz they went up

Also Madine set up Pilkington to score and help us win , against Sheff Utd I think .
If we had lost that game who knows if we would have got promoted ????
So it's got to be Acorn , by a country mile .

Re: Worst ever signing?

Acorn by a mile considering that was out big striker we need for the prem that year and Malky doubles the money on him.

Murphy might end up their if he doesn’t pull his finger out of his arse. ATM £11 million to have one good game vs Fulham last year.

Surely that header in a1-1 draw was just making up for the point we didn’t get due to his missed pen v wolves at home

The pair of them are shite.

Between them, wages and fees, agents and Madines promotion bonus probably sees our club in it for £20 million. A ridiculous sum of money for the goals return.

Got to be Cornelius. Ridiculous fee paid, massive agents fees (a lot of rumours about Malkies involvement) and also £35K a week !!

I remember him coming on at Anfield and thinking he looked like a parks player and not a very good one at that !!

He has done a lot more then one good game against Fulham.

Hasn’t been up to scratch this season though to be fair.

Acorn , something wasn’t right from the moment I first saw him Many others including from my two favourite city managers Eddie and Jonesy. But Madine ? To not even get a fee for him? Dear me the guys confidence must be shot after this, or maybe he is relieved, wonder how much Warnocks signing him actually cost us in the end with his contract termination and all.? Surely our 30k a weekreserve keeper has to be bombed out next? Well angry with all this consistently terrible player recruitment .

Godfrey Ingram by a country mile.A striker who missed sitters from 3 yards out.

Some short-term memories on here and the oddest ones are those (shall we say experienced supporters) who supported City in the real dark days when you could pick a City XI of poor players who would make Gary Madine look like a world-beater!

Your completely right Sven. But we weren't spending millions on them and we weren't looking for players good enough to get us to PL and gave a crack at staying there.

I was making the point that 6m for an assist was soon cancelled out by costing us a point anyway. The net result was 0 points from his contribution (unless there is another assist there somewhere)

What about OGS?! Clueless

Re: Worst ever signing?

Fri Jan 10, 2020 5:37 pm

It’s tough to say who exactly has been our worst signing as there has been so many in recent seasons. I think our scouts and transfer committee has a lot to answer for.

Recent times it has to be Madine, an awful footballer with an awful attitude towards Cardiff City and so glad hes left this club :bluebird:

OGS is a good shout. One player can't actually do that much damage other than be ineffective whilst collecting his wage. The manager on the other hand has the ability to bring in multiple people to be ineffective whilst collecting their wage.
