Racism is horrible but what heavy punishment is appropriate for name calling. I believe all this identity politics has driven this apparent spike in racist behaviour.

is there a real spike ? I know there are more being caught on TV.
but is it a case of players being encouraged to report every incident where as maybe they would not have previously..
add to that the amount of cameras at football and easier identification of offenders and numbers can look as if they are going up even if actual offences are going down.. I don't think it can be judged until the procedure has been in place for some time.

I do think you're right in that many more incidents are publicised nowadays because of improved CCTV and players willingness to stand up against it which is obviously a good thing. But I also think there is an overall increase in people willing to bring race into what they would, wrongly, describe as "banter".
For 10-15 years there was hardly any of that reported in the Prem/Championship but lately it does seem that people are using both casual and direct racist abuse at games that perhaps wouldn't have been tolerated a few years ago. I don't think it's solely a football problem but they certainly need to set an example and deal with it strongly when it happens on their premises.

A few years ago some English fans said they wouldn’t cheer a goal if the player was black, Mark Walters was bombarded with Bananas by Celtic fans and Millwall sang they’re rather be a P@ki than a Scouse. Racism is a tiny problem these days, that’s being overblown by these anti racist groups. Think of it like this, how many Cardiff fans do you know that don’t want black players in the side, I don’t know one.

Anyone who goes to matches on a regular basis knows that racism is a very, very, very , rare occurance at football matches these days. A damn less prevalent than in society as a whole. Unfortunately this doesn't fit the anti - racist cliques agenda and so every perceived racist incident is blown up out of all proportions and willingly spotlighted by the media. Kick It Out and the like are causing far more damage to race relations in this country than some isolated - and I mean isolated -idiots who abuse a black player. We now even have a situation of these people scrutinising the TV to try and pick out people in the crowd who they think are being racist. That scares me.

Agreed, from where I am everybody’s bumping along just fine and these anti racism groups are doing more harm than good. Throw in fekkwits like Stormzy and Lily Allen constantly moaning and you could easily believe we’ve all cut holes in our pillow cases.
