The severe demise of the ayatollah

Wed Dec 11, 2019 8:03 am

Having been a regular from 1988, from 1999-2014 I probably watched a handful of games through working away in different parts of the world, but on my return it was evident that the once symbolic ayatollah was in severe demise.

Could it be that in today’s image conscious society people are unwilling to tap their heads?

Bring back the ayatollah! :ayatollah:

It’s definitely on its last legs from what I’ve seen.

Whether that’s due to the image or the PC of it all I don’t know but it’s a shame because it’s unique to us when most other things in football is shared between clubs.

:ayatollah:

Agree mate. In our latest promotion season, I was stopped at traffic lights when we scored a last minute winning goal away from home. The guy behind must have been curious having witnessed my elaborate celebrations and switched his radio on, before following suit. We exchanged ayatollahs and drove our separate ways shortly afterwards.

The new generation are probably realising how stupid it looks. That’s not me having a go at you, it really is ridiculous and has been a figure of fun for years. Especially THAT video

The fact it’s roots are from and named after Ayatollah Khomeini, the man who brought suicide bomb terrorism to the west and led an Islamic state in Iran... probably doesn’t help.

Me and a mate were walking through Macclesfield a few weeks ago, he had a city shirt on. Toot toot. Ayatollah from a bloke driving past!!

I see Mark Hudson often as he lives up here. My 8 year old always ayatollahs him, he gladly returns the favour!

I think it's great... Will always do it.

Had it done to me recently in Asia by a German football fan of Munich!
It’s a bit of fun and unique.

Asia? :D

That’s not a true story is it. Who on earth would say “Asia”?

It was a bit of fun and meant to look silly, just like turning your back when a goal is scored. Most things seem to have a limited life span, and there are hardly any chants or songs sung at the CCS that were sung at NP in years gone by.

That video is an absolute belter in all fairness. :laughing6:

I was unaware of the links to a man who brought terrorism to the west, but will happily take your word on it.

Having spent the last 21 years serving my country in different parts of the world, I don’t do it in support of any terrorist, but more as an opportunity to inject some fun and maintain something that is unique to Cardiff City Football Club from a football perspective.

Fair enough mate. Maybe many others don’t realise either and do it innocently enough.

Probably needs to die out now though under the current climate.

Good on you for the 21 years, tough tough job.

Could just - I don’t know - start something new ideally with a less controversial name.

Fair point on the current climate and thank you.

In hindsight, I’m glad my wife refused my proposal of Ayatollah for my sons middle name. My Daughter isn’t best pleased with Ninian for her middle name, but maybe one day she’ll warm up to it.

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Is this below the belt insult aimed at me? If so, I’ve made nearly 500 posts on this board and I can’t ever recall one that has been negative regarding Cardiff City. I’d be willing to be proved wrong.

This was merely a civilised debate based on an observation at how the clubs fans and society in general have changed over the years.

The same guy who is offended by Christmas. After all it is named after a guy who has been responsible for the starting of wars and the death of millions! Chill out, it's a bit of fun and unique to us.

Absolutely correct mate. I met the German guy on a tiny island in the Philippines before travelling around different parts of ASIA.
Was funny, him doing the ayatollah on a small boat in the middle of the ocean with me in a wetsuit and him dressed in his replica kit - scuba diving!

Like I say I don’t engage with pricks like him but will gladly answer other posts from proper people like yours.

Right, then you would still say where it happened. It’s a key sign when someone lies, they give as broader stroke as possible.

Someone came up to me when I was in Monaco and had a Swan on my car, they did the Michu celebration. Very memorable. I would never say someone did it in Europe.

I’m yet to meet an Asian who says “I’m from Asia”. And there are many in this part of the world. Just as I dont think I have ever said I am European.

Not really innocent, it was clumsy in its conception. It was after e funeral of an Islamic leader and that sign was used to our him homage. You guys copied it and named it after him.

He was the instigator if mass suicide terrorism in the West. To pretend it wasn’t is ridiculous.

no..to pretend its anything but innocent is ridiculous..
take a long hard look at the video link you posted... does that not look innocent..
the name ayatollah was convenient and maybe it is clumsy but its football not university challenge..
the head tapping is nothing like the funeral , has never been associated with violence and has zero to do with terrorism or suicide vests...im not really a big fan of it either..but get a grip.

Eh? I’m not following you here.

It is literally copied from people paying homage to the Ayatollah at his funeral. Not only is it copied... it is named after him. He always was the leader of an Islamic State in Iran who essentially invented suicide bombing and made his followers use it. This isn’t something that was found out afterwards.

Whether people have fun doing it, isn’t the point. What if people have fun doing ‘the Bin Laden’ and copy chants and dances that people did to honour him? Acceptable if it’s done for fun?

You don’t need to go to university to know it’s origins. And once you do know, then in the current climate there isn’t really an excuse not to stop what is a very silly thing anyway.
