EFL TO IMPOSE 'ROONEY RULE' NEXT SEASON
Football League clubs will have to interview at least one Black, Asian or ethnic minority candidate for a first-team manager's position from next season.
It follows an 18-month trial period, which saw clubs make a voluntary commitment to the rule.
The 'Rooney Rule' is an NFL policy that requires the league's 32 teams to interview BAME candidates for head coaching and senior operation roles.
"The EFL has today made a further commitment to improving equality in first-team football by introducing a recruitment code into regulation in order to help address the under-representation of BAME managers," an EFL statement read.
Sol Campbell is one of only three BAME managers among the 72 EFL teams

Football League clubs will have to interview at least one Black, Asian or ethnic minority candidate for a first-team manager's position from next season.
It follows an 18-month trial period, which saw clubs make a voluntary commitment to the rule.
The 'Rooney Rule' is an NFL policy that requires the league's 32 teams to interview BAME candidates for head coaching and senior operation roles.
Sol Campbell, manager of Macclesfield, Keith Curle, manager of Northampton, and Dino Maamria, manager of Stevenage, are the only three BAME managers employed by the 72 EFL clubs.
"The EFL has today made a further commitment to improving equality in first-team football by introducing a recruitment code into regulation in order to help address the under-representation of BAME managers," an EFL statement read.
The EFL has also introduced a new rule to stamp out teams observing each other's training following the 'Spygate' scandal between Derby and Leeds this season.
Leeds were fined £200,000 by the EFL after a member of their staff was removed by police from the perimeter of Derby's training ground. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa said he had sent someone to observe their training.
The new rule states: "Without prejudice to the requirements of Regulation 3.4 (that each club shall behave towards each other club with the upmost good faith), no club shall directly or indirectly observe (or attempt to observe) another club's training session in the period of 72 hours prior to any match scheduled to be played between those respective clubs."

Shouldn’t the criteria be the skills for the role irrespective of colour or race. Could this not be classed as discrimination against white mangers who may miss out on being shortlisted and interviewed.

Forced equality is no equality at all.
Any manager on a short list should be there for no reason other than there ability to improve a football team. Colour (or sexuality or even gender for that matter) really should not be anywhere in that decision.
Despite the undoubted good intentions, any form of affirmative action is always a bad, bad idea.

The world has gone mad with all this equality bollocks, the same as getting women pundits on the BBC, ITV and SKY.

Soon EFL clubs will have to interview women I expect. This is the world still going mad.

And when one doesn't get employed they will be screaming racial bias and inequality? Next step will be only appoint bame staff to get equal numbers bit like politics now where parties are looking at getting 50/50 split on gender .....

Should'nt they stipulate that at least one white candidate must also be interviewed, otherwise they could be accused of race discrimination. Surely race, religion and all the rest should not even be a consideration. It should be all about selecting the best person for a particular role, and if either white applicants or black applicants or any other colour for that matter are not deemed good enough, then tough luck.

Exactly, my wife is Asian but I dont expect her to have to be interviewed because she is of other race. Madness beyond words

What's the point as most clubs know exactly who they want before they sack the one they have ... more pc bullshit.
Fri Jun 07, 2019 3:03 pm
This is a f*cking joke.
I’m claiming discrimination on this one.
I’m going to do my coaching badges just to apply for a job to get knocked back.
I will then have a court case with the FA....
Football has gone mad. All time low.

If your good enough regardless of colour religion or sexual orientation...your good enough in my eyes.
just because your your a gay black Muslim vegetarian tree hugger, shouldn’t automatically get you on a short list or fast track you.
If your crap , your crap end of.

You're right and this will not help the cause at all, as fingers will now be pointed regardless of the qualities of the candidate
Racism is abhorrent but the tough but simple fact is that clubs have a right to choose whosoever they want to interview and employ as manager/coach

For arguments sake....
A club is sacking their existing manager.
They've made an unemployed manager their target (For arguments sake he's middle aged and white).
Interviewing one candidate as he's the one they want.
They bring him in agree a package and next day he's announced as new manager.
Will that club not fall foul of the new rules and what will happen to said club punishment wise?
Fri Jun 07, 2019 3:23 pm
If you're good enough you will make it if you're not you won't, what a load of PC bollocks!!!
What next complaints because there are no transgender Managers?

Agreed most of them are shit, there is one really good woman journalist on the Sunday Supplement, and one good pundit on Sky can't remember either name, but they are as good as the men and there on merit, the rest IMO are there just to be PC.

My thoughts exactly. The majority of managers are appointed when a club seeks out one person who they have in mind. Warnock being a case in point. Are we now going to be in a position where a club is not allowed to go out and get the man they want without first having to draw up a shortlist of 3 or 4 with a black candidate amongst them.

what you have described there is our appointment of Warnock, Trollope, Slade , OGS, Malky { all be it after the Shearer nonsense } , DJ, Lennie , Cork , Gould ….in fact I can not remember the last time our club were last actually looking or didn't get who they targeted..

It's counterproductive it will mean shit black Managers having to be interviewed for jobs they are not good enough to do due to their previous managerial jobs, it's wasting everybodys time!
Fri Jun 07, 2019 4:05 pm
This is a circus!! So when Warnock leaves Cardiff. They have to interview somebody black or Asian? How many clubs will be pulling in ethnic minority back room staff and saying they had an interview. This will change absolutely nothing!!!
Fri Jun 07, 2019 4:11 pm
Daft isn't it.
I bet loads of us have been there though, I just have myself, went for a job I knew was mine and was interviewed with 8 others for the tick box part.
I do feel sorry for the other 8 but I'm sure the same has happened to me at some point when applying for jobs.
Fri Jun 07, 2019 4:14 pm
Just interview the best people. Does one person have to be white?
Fri Jun 07, 2019 4:35 pm
This is a joke. Equality of opportunity yes but that doesn't mean equality of outcome.
Fri Jun 07, 2019 4:53 pm
Do they interview a white person for every managers job in Nigeria?
Fri Jun 07, 2019 5:08 pm
Can anybody answer this please .
I am the owner of Cardiff city, I am looking for a new manager and I have to abide by these new rules.
Apart from Chris Hughton who out of this section of people is good enough or has proven themselves to warrant a interview at my club ?
I cant think of any if I'm honest.
That's not a racist thing I just dont want to take a gamble on a unproven manager.
Which former top level black players are trying to get top level manager jobs and why do they think they should get a interview just because of the colour of skin
Fri Jun 07, 2019 7:13 pm
We already have the equality act so if someone feels they were prejudiced when going for a job they are entitled to lodge a complaint
I do not believe in positive action like this it’s actively racist putting a candidate for an interview just because of skin colour, if that isn’t racist against other better candidates that should have got an interview in their place I don’t know what is
I have been involved in recruitment in retail sector for years if I was told I had to interview 10 people of ethnic minority I would refuse stating that I would be breaking equal opportunities and the equality act by selecting people based on their skin colour and not on their merits of the application form they supplied
World has gone mad with the money in football won’t be long for another manager puts on a claim against the FA or a club they apply to saying I’ve won this and this but I didn’t get the job cos a BAME manager got it when they had no right for interview in the first place
Fri Jun 07, 2019 7:28 pm
What if there isn’t any you want, or don’t see as a fit for your business?
I think it’s a slight to black people. Who would want to get a job that way..
