Since following the City since 1960, I have come up with a list of what i think are our 20 best players since then who all played a significant number of games for our club. Please feel free to point out any gl
glaring omissions and who you would personally remove from my list. In no particular order :
Ivor Allchurch
Ian Gibson
Ron Healy
Brian Harris
Michael Chopra
Phil Dwyer
Derek Tapscott
David Marshall
John Toshack
Don Murray
Billy Ronson
Willie Anderson
Brian Clark
Phil Stant
Tony Evans
Carl Dale
Nigel Vaughan
Mark Delaney
Dave Bennett
Alan Warboys
Peter King.
Mark Delaney.

Cohen Griffith, Nathan Blake, Danny Gabbidon, Aaron Ramsey, Peter Whittington, Kevin McNaughton, Rob Earnshaw and Andy Legg..... just 8 players you’ve missed out, surely a few of these names deserve to be in the top 20 best players???

Before anyone starts, I've just realised I mistakenly left out the great Peter King. Goodbye Mark Delaney

Many of my favourites there but then it dawned on me picking any XI from that list would only give you a championship standard team at best.

Ramsay ? Nowhere near enough games. Cohen not good enough nor Gabbidon in my opinion. Wouldn't argue with the others though.

Always liked Peter Sawyer.

Don't you mean Ramsey? Also your original list totalled 22 - including Delaney twice

Remove Nigel Vaughan and replace with Jason Koumas but Ramsey was better than both even at a oung age
Whilst I understand our affection for Stant a true warrior in dark times at the club but he wasn't in the class of Bothroyd and for that matter whilst Dale scored goals he wasn't in the class of Earnshaw or Hemmerman
You do have Dave Bennett who is my all time favourite! but I would always find a place for Peter Whittingham in any all time CCFC team

Leighton Phillips was a classy footballer.
Also, Nigel Rees was an incredibly talented youngster who had to leave the game through an injury which would only have kept him out for 6 months if it happened today.
On his day, Willie Anderson was unplayable.

Jason Koumas. 40 odd games does he qualify?

Think you mean Peter Sayer.
"Best" is a bit vague - Phil Dwyer was a very good servant for Cardiff but not necessarily the most gifted.
a few to add to the mix....again these played in some very different divisions and at different Stages of their Careers so not necessarily the most talented.
John Lewis
Keith Pontin
John Buchannon
Steve Grapes
Kevin Bartlett
Geoff Hemmerman
Danny Gabbidon
James Collins
Alan Curtis
Nigel Vaughan

How can you omit John Buchanan 231 appearances 54 goals!
Including the screamer against the Jacks.

think this is more a list of your favourites than the best players......many of my favs from different divisions and different eras in there too..personal favs missing for me Blake...Gary Bennett....Doug Livermore..
but been in the prem twice now yet only 1 prem player makes the ;list..?????????

These are always a bit of fun but a lot depends on the number of games you would expect people to have played before considering.
At one end of the scale Robin Friday was the most naturally gifted player I've ever seen in a City shirt but I would never put him in any list before Whitts. Similarly, Gary Medel was just outstanding for us but didn't hang around once things went pear shaped !!
Two omissions for me would be Clive Charles and Adrian Alston in the 70s. Neither played for us for long but both just oozed class.
In more recent times I don't think Stant, nor many other forwards, would get anywhere near Bothroyd in terms of ability.

Gary Bell
Thu Nov 01, 2018 2:28 pm
Jason (Psycho) Perry, 281 appearances, local boy and never gave anything less than 100%.
Thu Nov 01, 2018 2:31 pm
Koumas, Bothroyd and Earnie definitely deserve to be on that list! Bothroyd was the most naturally talented striker we've had down here in years!

Maybe. But he was never really our player which is why I left him out

Buchanan was very good with a great shot but I prefer the others I mentioned

Another excellent player for us. I can understand how he'd be in your top 20 if not in mine

I didn't choose on effort. Otherwise Ronnie Bird would have featured

I included Nigel Vaughan who shone in a dire side. Of the rest, I rated Curtis, Gabs and Hemmerman. But not the others especially Grapes who was rubbish

Well, Barry Jones I'd have thought was an obvious omission . Les Lee - was he in there somewhere or not ? I'd also say Ronnie Bird was one of our most spectacular players, even though he rarely got on the field for long.
Was Squires not worth a mention in goal ?
Not sure I could agree with Gary Bell in this context but we remember him well and fondly , in which spirit we've surely got to mention his partner ( in the old fashioned sense of that word), Dave Carver, and Mel Sutton.

Friday, like Greg Farrell, had bags of ability but wasn't with us for long. Unfortunately Farrell did not produce the goods often enough. I agree Alston was a classy player but again not enough games
