Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock reveals his latest transfer window plans after appearing to miss out on Liverpool's Marko Grujic

Saturday 4th August

Neil Warnock revealed his latest plans for the transfer window following the defeat to Real Betis

Neil Warnock admits a central midfielder remains at the top of his transfer shopping list as he admits he's almost resigned to missing out on Liverpool's Marko Grujic.

The Serbia international spent the latter half of the 2017/18 season on loan with Cardiff from Jurgen Klopp's side, helping the Bluebirds clinch promotion into the promised land of the Premier League.

Warnock was eager to bring the 22-year-old back to the Welsh capital on a loan deal for the duration of the upcoming campaign.

Ahead of his side's pre-season clash with Real Betis, the Yorkshireman conceded his pursuit of Grujic looked all but over.

But Warnock admits he's still determined to sign a new midfielder before Thursday's deadline, as well as bringing in a new striker to bolster his attack.

Speaking after Cardiff's 2-1 defeat to Real Betis, Warnock said: "If it's not possible then we'll go with what we've got. We're a bit thin with injuries but I've got one or two ideas to supplement the squad.

"They might not get in the team but I've got to bring in a few bodies in to supplement the squad."

And when asked if he was still eyeing up a new forward, Warnock responded: "Yes I think so. We didn't play with one today and I thought we did alright.

"We had two smaller lads and I thought we played quite well doing that. We had a bit more threat and movement so
The Bluebirds went ahead against La Liga outfit Real Betis through Josh Murphy's fifth minute effort.

But the visitors struck back with goals from Lorenzo Moron and Cristian Tello to clinch victory.

Joe Ralls and Callum Paterson started the match in the centre of midfield, with Sol Bamba also venturing forward at times having occupied the role in spells during the Bluebirds' promotion-winning campaign.

And Warnock admitted that he won't be overly concerned if he fails to land another central midfielder this week.

"I'm disappointed that we haven't got one or two but that's life," added the Cardiff boss.

"I won't worry about things like that. Sol (Bamba) will probably end up being the best midfielder in the league.

"Next week is all about increasing the squad. We've had knock-back after knock-back. I won't sign anybody for the sake of it, I'd rather use the boys I've got in the squad."

Very concerning, why bring people in if they aren't going to play. May as well keep Pilks and Tomlin if we aren't going to be getting players of a decent quality.

Doesn't send a great message to those players he now approaches either.

Is it a smoke screen? Surely he won't bring in players just to make up a 25 man squad? To say that is totally ridiculous and not very reassuring to fans :o

I was just thinking something similar myself. Warnock always seems to be playing a few moves ahead of most of us. We shall see...

I really hope he’s bluffing with these comments, hopefully to make Tan release more funds.

I think the funds are there. We are just meeting the next generation of greedy players picking and choosing where to go. It's called welcome to the big world!

NW is a wisely old fox let's hope he gets who he wants as imo there are still a lot of players to move before now and Thursday

Not the time for smokescreens, time for action, get players in that make a difference and an impact on the first 11 or come clean about what's going on, we are part of the richest league in the world, time to release funds or go straight back down.

I cant believe the under estimation of Warnock people on her really think they know more than him . he knows what he is doing ffs which is more than a lot on here concerned about why

Just enjoy it as it was a joke years ago that Cardiff city be in top league we are there because of Warnock as he is a craft old bugger and he will do us ok this year

NW has always suggested he doesn't like the attitudes of players and agents in the Premier League and I reckon he's probably being reminded exactly why he dislikes it on a regular basis at the moment.

I have never been so depressed as I was after hearing Warnocks after match interview tonight,he seemed to suggest that it wouldn't matter to him if we didn't get another midfielder signing over the line,he even laughingly suggested that Bamba could be the best midfielder in the Premiership he also said that any new players coming to the club will not necessarily be first team players but just to make up our squad of 25 suggesting that he would be happy for instance starting with Paterson and Bamba in midfield really you couldn't make it up,he once said he love's nothing more than saving Tan money, news flash to Warnock,Tan is a billionaire he doesn't need you to save him money,I know I will be accused by the usual suspects that I'm being negative but I'm beginning to believe that Warnock is a very good Championship manager but he will find managing in the Premiership as alien as the dark side of the mòon,I want my detractors on here to believe me when I say I sincerely hope I'm wrong

Get real Warnock is not stupid enough to tell every man and his dog if we are desperate for players, he is just letting agents and players know that we will not pay inflated prices for any players, and if we don't get any then he is quite happy with what he has got (although truth be told he is not)

I don't agree with all that but at times warnocks attitude does concern me, maybe it's a game to take pressure off the team and also him. Firstly last season it was he doesn't like the premier league and doesn't want to manage in it etc. Then the whole thing about how we need him more than he needs us and he could go anytime and get a job in the championship. Maybe it's just me but I keep thinking it's bad signals to send out.

I almost feel like it's all said in some way in that if it goes wrong it isn't his fault. He can blame the budget (of which he says he hasn't spent yet)

It wouldn't surprise me to see him turn it around the next week and get in the players we need as well

But i understand fans being concerned as at this time the squad looks thin in key areas and lets be honest warnock isn't proven at this level, this is his chance but as it stands I don't think many would say he has made the most out of money he had had with midfield so bare.

Where are the Etheridge and NML of last season being brought in. The signings almost have sense of predictability about them. I'm not saying bad signings in fact I'm happy with the player we have brought but only if the budget allows.

Warnock deserves his chance to manage in the Prem and gets my full backing but this week is huge for him. If we don't sign a central midfielder capable of starting I'm massively concerned.

Just keeping his cards close to his chest as usual. We are not the only club in this position. My view is that players and agents are stalling trying to get the best deals. As prem managers finalise their 25's watch out for loads of deals on the last day.

To be honest it doesnt really matter to me if we are in the premier or the championship as long as i got a club to support, in a lot of ways i prefer the championship, more games cheaper tickets ect but thats another debate, my point was getting depressed cos we arent spending huge amounts of money or cos warnock is leaving things a bit late to bring a couple of players in is a bit daft, and the hate towards warnock from a few on this board, the man who took an average team.to second in the championship to get us where we are, is starting to annoy me, as i said relax and enjoy we could go out and spend another 50million and still go down, everyone can see we need a couple of players hopefully we get them if we dont, as dave jones used to say, we go with what we got

I give up, you are missing the whole point, please read my post again and think about it, I am saying that what he is putting out there is that he will not be held to ransom by agents or players, so if they try and blackmail us into signing players, with inflated fees, It is not going to happen. Do you now see the point? Yes I have every confidence in him keeping us up.

These arguments will never be resolved when you have fans who have a totally different expectations from following a team.

You are obviously in it for the success and that alone. Others see it as a calling and something that is meant to elate and frustrate at the same time.

Your following the wrong club if it's all about the spend and the success.

Many years in the doldrums of the 80's and 90's gives you a feel for what we have now achieved.

I'm certainly not depressed at the thought of watching Cardiff playing in the PL. I seem to have spent most of my life watching us playing in the bottom two divisions in front of a handful of people, or more recently treading water in the second tier of English football. This is a pleasant change for me, and I suspect most other fans as this is only our second appearance in the top flight in half a century. Going to enjoy it for however long it lasts as I had serious doubts that I would ever get this opportunity during my lifetime.

Excellent post ,lets enjoy the ride and maybe we may just suprise ourselves.
If not the club is now finacially secure,no more boom or bust.
Even after 50 years watching , another few seasons like ollie or slade was driving me to despair.
Hopefully never again.

The people who are claiming to be depressed and slagging Warnock off need to get real, what is the matter with some people, we are in the Premier League FFS, if you had said 12 months ago that is where we would now be, most would never have believed it. It has happened and we are there so enjoy it and as for the doom merchants f**k off.

Why don't you 'f**k off' and just respect peoples opinions for what they are

Some people don't just want to be in the 'Premier League', I would rather see us be competitive in League 2 than get smashed off the park week in week out in the EPL.

Maybe those who seem happy 'just to be there' are subconsciously more excited about seeing the opposition as I can't for the life of me understand the 'just enjoy the ride' philosophy. Whats to enjoy if your losing every week other than watching the 'superstars' of all the other Clubs.

We need to be competitive and to be competitive you need to invest in the playing squad, that's all people are saying.

Spot on. Plenty of dealing to be done on deadline day
