Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Wed Jul 25, 2018 9:41 pm

Losing to rotherham is a wake up call for tan and neil. Invest and spend some money on the quality needed asap, 2 top quality midfielders and 1 top quality striker needed or we are down simple as that. Been saying it over and over for ages now but tonight proves it even more. And people saying ohhhhh its only pre season its about fitness bla bla bla are diluded and need to wake up imo... wolves fulham and every other team in the prem would have beaten rotherham tonight id say.

Win lose or draw pre season this is my opinion on our squad, drawing to torquay and losing to rotherham drives it home for me

I am guessing this is a joke. A year ago today we lost to Shrewsbury in another pre season training session. Had no bearing whatsoever on what we did when the real business began. The only priority is to get up to full match fitness and avoid injuries. If a club is that desperate to win a game, they are not going to make a stack of changes during a game.

teams have had fantastic pre season results then flopped at all levels.
they are training games..he made 9 changes, started with an experimental formation..
we all know we are up against it but its got zilch to do with training games.

On this reckoning if we had won all our friendly games we will be ok in premier with exactly the same players we got now! As for going down that's to be expected given it's same for teams newly promoted to the premier league. So no surprises if we are relegated more of a surprise if stay up  :o

I can only assume the ones getting worked up because we lost a training game have never played pre season friendlies themselves. If the had, they would know exactly what they are all about, and that no player who is given a run out during the game is going to lose any sleep over a defeat, or get all excited if they win. More fun than a routine training session, but no more important to the players.

You need to calm down

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 6:40 am

i questioned the decision to face the type of pre season that we have.
i came to the conclusion Neil wanted his boys to go into season on back of confidence.

Torquay and Rotherham results will have Neil Concerned, if it doesnt .... then we all should be concerned.

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Obviously you dont realise that pre season you try new things.
Not only did we play 20 players. We Also tried 3 different formations.

I have to agree with both RhiwEbbwBlueBird and Wez on this one. As I said on another Topic on this forum recently -"I have a lot of confidence in NW but he can't walk on water!! Unless there is a pot of money yet to come to light to spend on 2 or 3 decent players (as opposed to the Grujic's and Brysons of this world) then there is only one place we are going and the "wait until Christmas" brigade down the road will have a field day"

Surely even for those on here who totally choose to ignore the results in the only two pre-season games against what should be far inferior league opposition; it must be difficult even for them to identify 3 EPL teams who have inferior squads to us. Yes - we turned over the promotion hopes of a couple of teams last season who invested more into their squad than we did but this season every other team in the EPL appears to be investing more than us into their squads - wages and transfer fees. No - I don't expect us to be able to spend like the top 6 but I expected us to match the bottom six and we are not!

Spot on. We won't be using 20 different players when the real business starts. We got beat by Shrewsbury just before the start of last season, don't recall that having the slightest bearing on what happened when the league season kicked off. Within a few weeks we were beating the likes of Villa & Wolves.

We are going to have an uphill battle for sure this season, but losing a kickabout against any side will not play any part in how we perform in our league games.

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 7:51 am

What's up with all the negativity. It's pre season for a reason, it's for fitness these player ain't gunna put there neck on the line for pre season. They are just pacing around and getting back in shape. When the real season starts I guaranteed every player will cover every blade of grass and putting bodies on the line because they will be playing to stay up. If in pre season we were to play out of our skin and end up having injuries we'd be screwed. Let them pace themselves through. I do agree we need a couple more signing, but I'm more than optimistic about our season I feel we are gunna be okay we are gunna shock some people. But let's not judge the way our team are playing in pre season.

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 8:23 am

Don’t panic. Warnock’s trying out different systems at the moment, bound to be some teething problems. Also there’s still 2 or 3 players to come in, might be the Prem experienced players, we’ve been crying out for.

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 8:52 am

This thread is exactly why I don't do pre-season and other 'friendly' games at club or international level...

People just take far too much notice of the outcome and their mood changes on the back of it!

Pre-season is not a competition; it's a preparation for the long slog ahead. Despite what we're told, the players are never going to be at 100% commitment until the 'business' starts, which in our case is at Bournemouth-on-Sea on Saturday 11th August

Just be patient...because our season will ultimately be judged on 38 Premier League games and not a few 'warm ups' where our very capable management team are simply looking at their squad and the options available to them

Have some faith! :thumbright:

We already know this season will be tough, so don't write it off before a Premier League ball is even kicked! :ayatollah:

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 8:58 am

Fulham and Wolves might of spent alot more but what if their still relegated anyway we know from last time you can't just throw money at it they have to deal with these transfers and wages to meet FFP

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 9:21 am

Some of the comments in this thread just show that if we don't get off to the best of starts in the league some fans will quickly turn on the Manager and players.

Personally I'm fairly happy with the business that Neil and the club have done and will enjoy the upcoming season regardless where we finish. Staying up for me will be like winning the league with the amount Neil has spent so far. If we do get relegated the club will be in a far healthier position than it was prior to Neil's arrival.

It's going to be a good season regardless and I'm going to enjoy every game with us being the underdog and hope the majority of fans are like minded which will help in generating a cracking atmosphere for both home and away games.

I always want us to win but I've seen enough preseason to know the results pre season don't always reflect how your going to start the season.

Irrespective of any results preseason to me its clear we are 4 good players short in key positions.

No doubt we need to strengthen, and to be fair it looks as Warnock is trying his hardest to add some quality to his squad. I will enjoy this campaign whatever, because to me it is already a massive bonus that I will be watching top flight football for at least the next season. I never thought for one minute that we would be good enough for automatic promotion last season, and while I thought we had an outside chance of a play off place, I was convinced that this season would be another one in the Championship. Already on to a winner as far as I am concerned by being in the top flight for only the second time in 50 odd years, and if we avoid relegation, an even bigger bonus. :bluescarf:

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:23 am

I have seen City lose 5 pre-season friendlies and been promoted :bluebird:

And I have seen the other way around as well.

But I have said since May, City will need to sign some quality Premier League players if they are going to survive.

Re: Great loss and wake up call we needed!

Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:33 am

We absolutely need a quality midfielder and striker. Look at the way Wolves and Fulham are strengthening by signing internationals. I notice we started with a back five for the first time. It never seems to work with us. We aren't used to it and it doesn't suit our fullbacks or centrebacks. Let's get back to our best defence, with Bamba/ Morrison as the pairing.
