Does anyone else think this? (Connolly)

I want to say this because I find it bizzare. I would never be so negative about first team players etc because it doesn’t benefit anyone. But I need to ask you guys

The past 2/3 seasons whenever I Watch Matthew Connolly play, he is standing on his heels, hands inside his sleeves and just looks so helpless and out of place. Doesn’t matter where he plays, but I’m also stating this as if he’s a Center half, never mind Right or Left Back where he is even worse somehow.

But he jogs at BEST, never shows any urgency, is always losing headers, weak in the air, no strength, and his only “assett” is he can pass a ball quite okay for a defender... that’s literally it and is horrendous at everything else.

Honestly he is the worst player I have ever seen and is laughable to watch. Sorry but i can’t see anything else. Just curious is it just me?

Don't know what you are on about. He's had some harsh comments off fans. He's been a good performer for us. He reads the game well and doesn't let anybody down.

he's been a reliable deputy when required, which is not that often.

he's not an overly physical defender, nor does he run around the park like a headless chicken. it's very harsh to be too critical of him given that he's not had a run of games. he isn't at the level of bamba or morrison, but that doesnt mean that he's a poor championship player. only 2 years ago he was CCFC player of the season!

Hes useless as a RB. But ok for back up CB

Not really sure he’s premier quality but a good player

Always does a decent job when called upon. One of those players you can have in the backround who can fit in but not cause a fuss when not picked.

In saying that, I don't get the new contract and should make the 25 really.

this was his 5th promotion his 2nd under NW and although he was not used a great deal this time around, NW clearly trusts him to do a job if needed.......so maybe you need to look a bit harder..

Like someone has already mentioned, he was player of the year a couple of seasons ago, so he can’t be that bad.

He’s a versatile fourth choice centre back who will be used sparingly, so it makes sense to keep him for financial reasons and to maintain squad harmony. If replaced, a so called “better player” may not be content on the bench and change the dynamics of the dressing room for the worse.

Agree and been part of at least 3 teams to have gone up from the Championship to the promised land.

This is not the Championship where there's no limit to how many players you can have in the squad.
The Premiership rules are a maximum of 25 players plus unlimited under 21's, so with these constraints every team needs a few players who can play various positions but are not first choice in any of them.
IMO, Connolly is a great defensive back up, and will not make a fuss if he's not playing week in,week out. Jazz Richards is the same, versatile, without being a first team regular.
If the whole squad was full of players who expected to be playing every week then the harmony of the dressing room would disappear quicker than a "Jack" player.
I'm sure the "fringe" players will play their part sometime during the season.

If he is the worse player you have seen then clearly you weren’t around when we were in what is now called League 2 !
Has others have pointed out , he was Player of the year 2 seasons ago and has had 5 promotions to Premier and whilst he isn’t a first choice pick now, he has always stepped in and covered all across the back four when needed .
Warnock clearly values his contribution off the pitch saw well and this season our strength will be our team spirit and unity !

Spot on Warnock rates him, and five promotions say it all !!

Vastly underated at centre half, under malky he chipped in quite a few goals from set pieces as well.
Probably his biggest downfall is not getting a run of games to establish himself.

Nowhere near the worst player ever to play for the City. You obviously haven't been supporting us for very long. I don't think that he's premiership quality but there's no shame in that. Very harsh and unfair comments to a loyal player IMHO.

I see what I see and I’m obviouslt wrong so there we are, I’m glad everyone else thinks he’s useful so now we don’t have a waste of a player. If people had agreed with me it would have been a shame because it would probably be true that we have a crap player on our hands. Alas, my judgement is wrong with this particular player and I will try and give him the benefit of the doubt and admit I’m wrong. Obviously I still think what I posted but I am not someone who is going to want a City player read this and feel bad about it etc, unless it was a majority opinion which it isn’t. I would have deleted this yesterday if I could but I can’t haha. It was just a quick show of hands thing, no dramas.

Ooh very very harsh. Good servant to the club, solid player and will be a valuable squad player in the premier. NW happy with him too so that’s good enough for me.

Buy a replica top with “Connolly” on the back, you know it makes sense.

This has to be the most harsh of remarks on a player in recent times , Connolly totally loyal and a good defender not the best at right back has done a job for us there many times though and will fight for the shirt and he has got 5 teams promoted playing in defence.

Sorry OP but you lost any credibility to your post when you described Connolly as the worst player you’ve seen. I’m going to assume you mean in City colours which even then is an outrageous statement.

bizzare post IMO. player of the season under slade when we just missed out on playoffs a few years ago. Never really let us down, very harsh. good squad player, happy for him to stay.
