Think he may even surpass him. For a max of 3.5m it’s a very good deal :ayatollah:

I think Smithies will be the number 1 unless Etheridge improves big time. Smithies and Białkowski easily the best keepers outside the Prem and Smithies has been consistent for longer!

Agreed, that's a hell of a deal and QPR must be sick at that price

We're normally on the receiving end of such a steal so nice to turn the tables

I was thinking that! It's nice to be the ones doing good business and not getting small fees or even paying off players!

We now have 2 very good keepers and Murphy as cover. So let's ditch Camp as he is useless.

Aside from the odd kick and very rare mistake etheridge was excellent, smithies will push him but to say unless etheridge improves is ridiculous, he kept pretty much 20 clean sheets, kept us in numerous games with some excellent keeping, but he must improve apparently.

We now have 2 very good keepers who will push each other and naturally work off each other, but we have to start with etheridge who thoroughly deserves his place

Just because I'm saying Smithies is better doesn't mean I think Etheridge isn't good? It's life, Etheridge was very good last season but Smithies was better. There's a back 4 in front of you too and naturally Etheridge benefitted from having probably the best back 4 in the league in front of him. I'd start Smithies myself since he's had a few good seasons in a row now and like I said, him and Bialkowski were the 2 best keepers in the league last season IMO.

I don't understand the Etheridge hate either...

For me, Etheridge is number one until he makes a mistake.

Not exactly hate is it? I'm just saying Etheridge is very good, Smithies is better. Just because I find Smithies a better keeper it doesn't mean I'm hating on Etheridge and think he's bad?

I dont think theres hate, but people just looking at it objectively

also whoever is number 1 needs to be backed, there will be mistakes, dont think we can keep changing everytime one of them makes one

Sorry gents maybe hate was too strong a word...

I find that people get nervous with Etheridge in goal but for me, He's better than Marshall was.
I'm very happy with the Smithies signing and either in goal would fill me with confidence :thumbright:

I’ve heard zero hate for Etheridge on this forum!??
For me, I think it’s great that we have two decent keepers competing for the number one spot. Warnock will decide who starts after the pre-season training and friendlies. Nobody has a given right to start.

Woah now you're going too strong again...I don't think Etheridge is anyway near Marshall in his prime ! But Yes, good to have 2 solid keepers. First time we've had that since Marshall & Heaton

Its an opinion Mr sheep and I believe last season Etheridge was the best keeper I've seen in a city shirt :thumbright:
His kicking was dodgy at times but that can be worked on. Marshall was an incredible shot stopper but he didn't get off his line quick enough for me.

Re: ' ALEX SMITHIES TO BE CONIRMED TODAY '

His kicking was bad but has improved, but etheridge on the whole just got better and better, and I do agree he is one of the best keepers I’ve seen in a city shirt, however we lose him for 6 weeks ish, and have a great new option.

I am fairly loving the way we are doing our business, working in trampsville down west the 6 fingered seem to thinks it’s a shoe in to come straight back down, but I think he is building a very workman like band of brothers who will fight til the final whistle.

I’d like to see a right back and 2 midfielders, 1 with magic unlock the back door skills, and one enforcer.

Then it’s about who is going.

The whole squad have to look to improve, that's football!

Im a big fan of the way Etheridge finished the season, would have no problem with him starting the season but great to have someone fighting for his position. Let them fight it out preseason and see who does best.

Etheridge last season for me was one of the reasons we went up, he started off shaky but that is understandable as he moved up the divisions, however with the coaching he was receiving as the season went on and on he got better and better and better and it instilled huge confidence in the back four. You ask any defender, when you have a good keeper behind you it makes your job a little bit easier.

His kicking improved massively and for me he is one of the quickest keepers in the league off his line, he is brave and has reflex reactions and produced some key saves to save games for us, and i really hope NW keeps him as the No 1.

We do have a quality back up now in Smithies and i would imagine Camp and Murphy (who i feel has been unluckly as when he was brought into the team performed superb) will move on freeing up extra wages and reducing the squad numbers.

Welcome to City Alex, great he did the Ayatollah too :bluescarf:

Yup agree with most of that.

I don't think Smithies should automatically be back up though. Id like to see how both do preseason as no doubt they will both get their fair share of game time.

Exactly, however what we have to remember is neither is proven at top level

Hopefully one if not both will prove themselves in probably the best league in the world

Possibly Smithies might just start the season as no1 but either way Etheridge has certainly earned a chance to play at the top level

I’ve registered to your forum just to let you know what a stellar signing this is for you lot and how thoroughly gutted we all are at QPR. Smithies has been the single biggest reason that we have not been relegated the last two seasons.

I rate him as the best we’ve had at Rangers since Phil Parkes (and that includes a young Dav Seaman).

He should be in the reckoning for the national team and hopefully, now he gets a chance to perform under the attention of the premier league gaze, he’ll get the recognition he was never going to get with our current Shepherds Bush shower.

I have nothing but well wishes for him. Warnock will love him.

Look after him you buggers.
