CARDIFF CITY CHAIRMAN SAYS MONEY IS NOT AS BIG AS YOU THINK

Tue May 08, 2018 10:08 am

Mehmet Dalman on the summer transfer window

Mehmet Dalman has been speaking to BBC Radio Wales this morning.

Tuesday 8th May 2018

Here’s what he had to say.

“Money is not as big as people think. Yes, it’s £95m to be more precise, but then you have to subtract from that the wages and cost base of the club. So in terms of free cash, you’re not going to have as much as people think."

“We’ve got to play this exactly the way we played it when Neil turned up. Neil makes the decision he wants to do, we’re there to support him as much as we possibly can and Neil’s a very reasonable and sensible man."

“Every time Neil has asked for funds, especially in the January transfer window, we made them available to him. He has to lead and he will lead, and we’ll be there to support him in that process."

“I think the answer to that is definitely yes."
“In the previous years, that was not the case, but with a strong manager like Neil, I think he is quite strong. If anyone else wants to make a suggestion or contribution of course it’s taken on board but ultimately the manager decides who he’s going to have in his team.”

From what I have seen of the Premier league in recent years, the cash injections into the club doesn't give you enough to be free spending in the transfer market, but it does allow you enough comfort to be able to hang onto your decent players and not be in a position were you are forced to accept bids of a few million for any talent within the squad.

Mehmet skirting around the question and playing down the question of available funds for transfers. I think we all agree that the team needs strengthening in most area's. And this will cost a few bob. Whilst I agree Warnock will have a big influence on signings they are not going to be cheap. Maybe premier league fringe players on season loan or cherry pick some of the best championship players seems to be the way forward. Just hope that Warnock won't be too restricted when it comes to funds. In Warnock we trust

Exactly. And i think that’s what both Tan and Mehmet is playing down. We don’t have silly money to spend, and should neither. But if only going bargain bin, it’s straight back down again.

I totally agree with this approach. What's the point spunking millions on agents and transfers. How much did Paterson cost?? However I think there will be a lot of Ill feeling towards the board come January if we are struggling. But with the size of some prem clubs there is no reason why we can't compete and stay up. Brighton huddersfield Bournemouth Watford. Heck Swansea have a stadium 14k smaller than us and they've been in prem for yrs.

As well as we've done this season, I still doubt our squad is Premiership quality. We have to learn from Burnley, who showed that steadying the ship and even dropping back down to the Championship isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Tbh Warnock free transfers and loans have been much, much better than the players he's splashed out for, so I see no reason to break the mould. I'm sure the board have learned from our last promotion and agree.

Joey Alan would be a good buy. If we could meet his wage demand.

I think NW will look to recruit top Championship players where wages wont be an issue rather than fading Premiership players on high wages. Whoever he brings in must have the same dressing room ethos he craves

Hasn’t worked out for him before, has it? Spend on a striker and midfielder, loans and bargain bin on the rest.

We need more quality in the most important areas, a Premiership quality Striker, Keeper, and a Central midfielder to support Ralls, and wherever else we can afford !!!

Zohore, Etheridge, and Gunner won't cut the mustard if we are looking to try and stay up and build !!!

Use the loan window good ,it's key pay big wages but not huge transfer fees

I only just found out that Snodgrass is on season long loan from West Ham. If Villa don't go up I'd sign him in a heartbeat. Agree he's a tw*t but he's the kind of player that if he's your tw*t you'd love him.

Etheridge is more than capable of stepping up.
How many clean sheets did he kept?
Tremendous ability , lost count of how many 1 on 1 saves he made this season.

He is however not including the additional income from season ticket sales/gate receipts. Extra income from corporate and sponsorships, guaranteed parachute payments and of course additional club merchandise. Being very coy about available transfer funds for Warnock.

Because of warnocks experience the club will expect him to do it on a small budget ,
So looks like we will struggle to stay in the premiership next season , I hope I'm wrong but if anyone can keep us there Warnock is the best man for the job !

Agree on Zohore and gunner, think if Fulham don’t go up then should go all out and get mitro but etheridge not good enough ? Been one of our best performers this year and deserves a chance

Won't be long now before we are linked with every player currently playing football. Always good for a laugh during the close season, especially the itk posts. Gives us something to smile about while we wait for the pre-season friendlies to begin.

Sunderland had 99.9 million, is there not a new tv deal which has increased each clubs share?

Yes it's gone up but think he's saying what we all know that clubs don't have 100m to use on players :thumbup

The Sunderland total was £84.4m which each club receives plus the £1.9m for merit fees ie for finishing last plus £13.6m for tv fees making a total of £99.4m

This year every team starts off with £95m and then the merit table and the tv fees are added.

That is why he stated £95m.

The minimum is actually £97m as there is a guarantee of at least £2m from the share of televised games.

On top of the money from t.v. rights , the club will receive far higher match day income from gate receipts , its share of catering income (over and above the Compass income under their contract) , sponsorship ,advertising etc. Would be disappointing if the total income for 2018/19 season was less than £120m. If we can stay up , the new t.v. deal for 2019/2022 should be even more lucrative.

Mehmet is of course right in laying down the marker that this money is not all available to strengthen the playing squad. A large proportion of the extra money will go in increased wages and the annual cost of transfer fees to make the team stronger , but there are additional general costs of running the club at the higher level. Also , the first £20m or so of additional income is needed to cover the losses being incurred at current income levels , so not all the additional income results in profits.

I agree also.

On the night we got promoted against Charlton in 2013 VT said MM would have £25m to spend on players. It is my opinion the seeds for our demise were sown then. Every shark agent/chairman spotted easy money to be made from a naïve owner and manager.

I really hope any ill feeling is put into perspective. We are still a club in recovery and the plan should be for the next 5 years in which time we will probably at sometime get relegated.

However, we shouldn't throw good money after bad like we did last time. This is a golden opportunity to get the club on a solid financial footing and if we are struggling come January then any spending has to be proportionate and not a desperate gamble.

He's good but to stay in the Premiership you need the very best, fr the bottom and newly promoted teams they are the difference between 17th and 15th, along with a Striker the most important player.

He has a lot of fans, let's see what Warnock decides, he's the expert !!!
