Expanding capacity

Mon Apr 30, 2018 12:20 pm

I understand we can expand both ends of the stadium quite easily which was allowed for in the plans to a total of 38,000 wonder if we will bother?

I don’t think we need to right now. A lot hinges on the weekend. If we don’t go up then absolutely no need. If we do go up. Well we probably won’t have the smallest ground anyway. I’d want to see if we can consolidate our position before getting ahead of ourselves.

I thought it could be expanded to around 70K?

Don't think its quite that much but i'm sure it was over 40.
How much did the red seats add to the old capacity ? I'd guess it would be similar to that.

Yea I remember it being something like 40k+

I would just fill 2 of the 3 corners which will give us a few hundred but make the ground look better. One needs to remain to get equipment in

I'd think it should be more than that - the new stand added 5k seats I believe? Seems like we should add more than 2k seats each end if we expanded?

I think Sams original plans was it could be expanded to 70k but they later sold the land required to make it that size, I think it can go up to around 40k but we have had an empty stand for a few years and could yet still be in the championship next season. Lets learn from past mistakes.

Re: Expanding capacity

Couple of years in top flight first I think even then don't think we need to do anything, just look at Bournemouth. Watford etc.

Let’s also not forget that we couldn’t get more than 20k a few matches ago when we was top..

Deffo we have a brilliant 33000 stadium which is fit for purpose for a club of our size. If their is spare cash to spend on infrastructure it should go on a training ground.

Can we not turn into Wolves and suggest how big we are by talking about expansion.

We have got a good training base at the Vale but there were brilliant plans at one stage to build our own training ground which we would own.

We have a ground that holds well over 30k, and we are averaging 19k this season. Not sure why we would even think of expanding at the moment. If we get to the PL, we won't fill the ground for every game. If we survive there for more than a season, the novelty will wear off and our current capacity should be more than enough for a club of our size. Only future European Champions like Wolves who will need 100k stadiums, and even then will probably still be too small for a side about to grow bigger than Barcelona. ;)

Yea I thought it was close to that number. It would make it one of the biggest in English football.
It was in a programme from prem days. I remember reading it

We’ve barely averaged 20,000 this season when we’ve been top 4 all season....why would you even think about expanding?

33,000 is big enough for us.

Re: Expanding capacity

Mon Apr 30, 2018 3:15 pm

Move the family stand to ninian upper and open up the grange end to season ticket sales.
If we go up they would fly out.

I think that's all gone now as part of the planning for the businesses along Leckwith Road, I wouldn't completely rule out any development even in the short term providing its cost effective. Definitely fill in the away corner and the Canton / Ninian corner down to pitch level unlike with the canton Grandstand corner.- very modest cost for around 700 - 800 seats.

They could seriously look at the Ridsdale expansion for the Canton and family. The stadium was designed for an additional tier. It was sort of bolt on and even with the Ninian they reckon it could be completed over a single close season. You couldn't do it from a standing start - by this stage most of the structural steel would be fabricated and manufacture of the precast components progressing well. Tan should have gone with that plan, capacity would now be 36K. It would have cost a fraction of the cost of the Ninian extension, which to be honest in terms of the middle corporate tier is a bit of a balls up. I fear we could be having a bit of bother when the well fed £ 100 a game merchants cant see the game when everyone in the Ninian stands up. The Ninian stalwarts will be getting told to sit down even more than they have to date. I like the top tier.

Our catchment area is massive I agree, but it will take years in the premiership to replace generations of united and Liverpool fans.

The atmosphere has been shocking this year playing in a stadium that is barely half full most of the time. Would be even worse playing in a bigger, more empty stadium if we get promoted and then return to the championship

Re: Expanding capacity

In the fifty or so years I have been a City fan, we have often been referred to as a sleeping giant, mostly by City fans. The topic of how big we could be has been brought up time and again throughout my time of supporting the club, but apart from a handful of games, nothing has ever come of it. I have come to accept that we are what we are, a medium sort of sized club who are not particularly fashionable when compared to the likes of Villa, Wolves, West Ham etc.

We have a potential big area from which to attract fans, but we have always had that so whether we ever get those fans remains to be seen. We have not had a lot of success getting them in during my lifetime. Can only hope, but it will take many years to break the hold of the S Wales followers of Liverpool, Man U, Spurs, Arsenal and the other traditional big clubs.

Can't understand it myself, I would much prefer to support my local side, rather than an English side who play a hundred or more miles away. Not sure anything will change any time soon.
