About Barnsley

Barnsley Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The team play in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Nicknamed "the Tykes", they were founded in 1887 by Reverend Tiverton Preedy under the name Barnsley St. Peter's. The club colours are red and white, and their home ground since 1888 has been Oakwell.

In 2016, Barnsley won two trophies at Wembley Stadium – the Football League Trophy, beating Oxford United 3–2 in the final, and the 2016 Football League play-offs, beating Millwall F.C. 3–1 in the final. Barnsley became only the second club to secure both the Football League Trophy and Football League promotion via playoff finals in the same season, after Grimsby Town F.C.. Barnsley FC considers Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United to be their rivals, both teams currently play in the Championship.

On 19 December 2017, it was announced that Patrick Cryne and family had agreed to sell a majority stake in Barnsley Football Club to a consortium involving Chien Lee of NewCity Capital, Paul Conway of Pacific Media Group, Indian businessman Neerav Parekh and baseball legend Billy Beane. The new consortium holds 80% of the shares and the Cryne family holds 20% of the shares of Barnsley Football club.

Although it's vital we win these next two home games I doubt they are going to to be as easy as some are predicting. I'd love a good solid victory against the next two but I have a feeling they'll be really scrappy games with an odd goal or two. I'm sure clubs below us will slip up as well over the next few games but we just need to focused on picking up some consistent points now.

Cardiff City's lead over @dcfcofficial remains at 7 points after the Rams' 2-1 loss to @FulhamFC this afternoon. The Cottagers now lie 5 points behind but we have a game in hand over both!

José: “We know what’s happening in the division, but we only focus on what we can affect ourselves. We believe we are going to stay in the Championship.”

José: “The postponement wasn’t ideal but we have had more time to work with the players which has been pleasing.”

José: “Adam Jackson should be fine for tomorrow and Ethan Pinnock too will be available to us. Isn’t this wonderful news?”

Cardiff City News

Monday 5th March 2018

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock says the disruption to his side's preparations for Tuesday night's clash with Barnsley could prove to be a huge benefit, with several injured stars given added time to recover.

The Bluebirds were due to travel to Brentford on Saturday, but the extreme weather conditions brought on by the 'Beast from the East' saw the fixture become one of many across the EFL to be postponed.

The vicious cold snap saw the team train on the turf of Cardiff City Stadium in the build-up to that trip to West London, with City only able to return to their regular training base on Monday.

Despite the stalling of Bluebirds momentum, with rivals Aston Villa also out of action, and Derby County losing to a resurgent Fulham, Warnock is keen to look at the positives of a weekend off.

"With all the snow it's obviously been a little horrendous," he said. "It's thrown us out but it's thrown everyone out. We've been back on the grass on the training ground today. We trained in the dome yesterday because it wasn't really fit enough.

"I think it affects everyone at this time of year."

"I don't think it's done us any harm. I think when you look at the work people like Junior Hoilett have done over the last six months, I think the lads were almost glad of a rest really.

"Paterson was struggling with an injury too and it gave us a few extra days. He's got a chance [to face Barnsley] and we'll have a fitness test tomorrow."

The Scot is not the only one edging closer to a return, with Warnock revealing that a clutch of first team players are also on the cusp of getting themselves back into the first team picture, including midfield enforcer Aron Gunnarsson, who has made his long-awaited return to full training.

"We've got one or two knocks but nothing new really," he added.

"Morrison, we're going to leave until last minute but he is training at the minute and Gunnarsson has been training too which is good news. He's back out on the grass and that's great for us.

"Peltier and Traore should be back for the weekend but Tuesday will be too soon for them as I think they need training and Jamie Ward will play in the under-23s on Thursday to make sure he has a good hour.

Sean Morrison is back in training and could be in line for a start on Tuesday night.

"He's fit again but I don't want to risk him until he's had a bit more playing time because he's not had much this year.

"Kadeem has done well and he'll probably be in the squad tomorrow."

As is the case with most of his old clubs, Warnock admits he still has a great deal of affection for Barnsley, and the form of Swansea City loanee Oli McBurnie has not gone unnoticed.

The Scottish striker has become a huge hit in South Yorkshire after netting four goals in as many league outings, and Warnock admits he's been impressed by his recent showings.

"He looks a good young player and he's taken his goals really well and he seems to be enjoying himself. I think that's what we're doing so well. My lads are enjoying it as well.

"But it's always a tough game against Barnsley, who are obviously one of my old clubs and I've got a soft spot for them, but we'll still be doing our best to get one over them."

Cardiff City v Barnsley: Tykes will look to pit their strength against that of Cardiff

Tuesday 6th March 2018

FEWER than three weeks into his first appointment as a ‘number one’ in English football, Jose Morais faces someone at the opposite end of the scale in terms of managerial experience tonight.

The Portuguese pits his wits against a grandee of the game in Yorkshire-born Neil Warnock, with the 69-year-old celebrating half a century in football in 2017-18, his 38th season as a manager.

Warnock, who had a spell at Barnsley in his playing days in the Seventies, is seeking a record eighth successive promotion to guild his epic managerial career at his 15th club. His Cardiff side did a number on the Reds en route to a 1-0 success at Oakwell earlier this term.

Morais, on the road with Barnsley for a third successive match, is looking forward to tonight’s experience, which will represent another invaluable learning curve in his Championship education.

On the task for Barnsley, who claimed a dramatic last-gasp 4-3 win on their last visit to the Bluebirds, said: “We are aware about their strong side and want to use our strong side. I think it will be an interesting game.

“He (Warnock) is an experienced guy with a certain style and intention in preparing and building his teams according to his idea of football and how to achieve goals. I respect him.”

Morais has confirmed that Lloyd Isgrove will again not be involved tonight for tactical reasons, with the winger currently “not an option” according to the Reds’ head coach, on a run of four succesive away games.

Cardiff City get back to Championship action tonight against Barnsley after Saturday's clash with Brentford was snowed off.

With fourth-placed Fulham having closed the gap on the weekend, a win at home tonight is vital if the Bluebirds want to stay in the top two.

The Bluebirds remain four points clear in second place heading into this contest, and boss Neil Warnock will be keen to ensure his side extend their unbeaten run to nine games with a positive result against the Tykes.

However, Barnsley will be desperate for points too with the club currently battling relegation.
