Six months of research went into producing it, but Leeds United's new club crest has been described as "awful", "horrendous" and "shocking" by fans on social media.

The Championship side unveiled the new badge, which is to mark the club's centenary in 2019 and will be used from the start of next season, on Wednesday.

The club say that more than 10,000 people were consulted during the process of producing the crest and it "represents the passion and the unique identity that runs deep through the club".

Managing director Angus Kinnear said: "In the past year we have worked very hard as a club to re-engage fans and the wider community across Leeds.

"Once we heard that there was a desire for change to help herald a new era for club, it became of primary importance that the new crest clearly reflected who we are.

"Everybody knows how proud and passionate the Leeds United fans are, but since I arrived at the club, I have been in awe at the unique connection between the fans and the team."

The club say that the badge "depicts the 'Leeds Salute', which over the decades has been an expression of the passion that connects Leeds United's fans and players on and off the pitch".

However, it seems that it has not been well received by many fans of the club on social media.

Twitter user Amy Kelly called it "horrendous" while Bryn Johnson said it was "shocking" and Julie Trimble labelled it "dreadful". Among the more encouraging responses, Andy Gill said: "I quite like it."

Adam Pope, Leeds United commentator for BBC Radio Leeds, said: "The response not just from #lufc fans but from other clubs' supporters to the crest has been intense. Safe to say this has provoked a reaction!"

Within two hours of the new crest being revealed, almost 16,000 people had signed an online petition to have the the badge changed.

This is not the first time fans have reacted angrily to a change of crest - in 2013 Everton were forced to alter their redesign after fans complained about the removal of the club motto.

The badge like the team colours go together and as much as you can change them a bit to go with the times.
Ultimately if a club change to much there will be uproar amongst fans as we have found out.

Why do clubs do it ? Nothing to gain other than pissed off fans so leave it alone.

If I was a leeds fan id be fuming with it.

The people who run football clubs ain't got a clue have they nor do they learn from other clubs.
I remember when we protested in the ground a lot of away fans actual did it with us for which we applauded .other fans understand and feel the displeasure.
I just dont get it a football fan is a passionate person fully embracing there team and the symbol of this is a clubs badge and team colours.
When will clubs learn.
Im not a fan of leeds at all one of my least favourite clubs but i understand and feel for them .
All we did well some of us anyway was to stay true to our clubs identity no matter what and we kept saying it over and over again.

We won so can Leeds good luck to em they have my support. :bluescarf:

New Leeds United badge shows fan checking watch to see if he can go home yet

Leeds United new club badge

Wednesday 24th Jan 2018

The new club badge unveiled by Leeds United today has been designed to reflect the reality of supporting the team as it approaches its 100th year.

The new crest shows a fan looking at his watch during a Leeds game and wondering if he can go home yet, as the designers seek to capture the essence of what it means to support Leeds United in 2019.

A club spokesperson explained, “There have been times, in the not too distant past, when Leeds fans were constantly excited at the prospect of fighting towards the top of the premier league; when they were regularly enjoying noisy European nights at Elland Road – but those days have gone.

“Today’s Leeds fan experience is more about scrapping for a point at home against Preston North End and wondering if leaving now means you might miss the traffic and be home in time for Take Me Out.

“It’s important we move with the times, and we feel the new badge really embodies the values of boredom, ambivalence and a general sense of wanting to be somewhere else doing literally anything else.”

Many fans have expressed their anger at the new club crest, with season ticket holder Simon Williams telling us, “I haven’t been this embarrassed to be a Leeds fan since we got dicked 3-0 away at Sheffield Wednesday.

“The club is claiming that they consulted 10,000 people on their way to agreeing to this new redesign, but having seen the atrocity they’ve eventually come up with, I can only conclude they were all Manchester United fans.”
