They play in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system, having last appeared in the Premier League in the 2001–02 season.

The club was founded in 1878 but did not turn professional until 1936, and was subsequently elected to join the Football League in 1938. They play their home games at Portman Road in Ipswich. Ipswich have won the English league title once, in their first season in the top flight in 1961–62, and have twice finished runners-up, in 1980–81 and 1981–82. They won the FA Cup in 1977–78, and the UEFA Cup in 1980–81. They have competed in the top two tiers of English football uninterrupted since 1957–58. They have competed in all three European club competitions, and have never lost at home in European competition, defeating Real Madrid, A.C. Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio and Barcelona, among others.

Cardiff City need to Stretch the Ipswich defence

By Chris Wathan

Monday 30th October 2017

To argue that opposition teams have wised up to Cardiff’s fast, direct style would be a simplistic summary — even if it contains a kernel of truth — and it would overlook a glaring difference between the way Cardiff started the season and the fashion in which they’ve played in recent weeks.

Junior Hoilett and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing began the campaign in sparkling form and though they’re by no means performing poorly, they’re not hitting the sky-high levels they had reached in August and September.

Ratings: Sol Bamba and Mendez-Laing impress on a frustrating day for Cardiff City against Millwall
A number of valid reasons can be attributed to this slight decline, but one must be how they've stopped sprinting to the byline and getting in behind defences.

Instead of using their pace to stride into unmarked territory, the wingers have too often been picking up the ball in their own half and attempting to dribble through traffic — rather than run off the ball and receive it beyond a defence.

The 2-0 win over Sheffield United in August — which looks more impressive every week given the Blades sit on the summit — was an illustration of Cardiff's off-the-ball running. Warnock sussed out the Blades’ gameplan early on and astutely responded by instructing his wingers to find pockets of space behind the full-backs and they duly reaped the rewards.

I originally forecast a draw against Millwall but said we would make up for it by beating Ipswich. Have gone for a Cardiff win, but a repeat of Saturday's performance and another 0-0 could be on the cards.
Our defence looks sound enough, but I can't see us scoring a bucket full of goals anytime soon. I am going with 1-0, and I suppose the main thing is that we just get 3 points.
If we draw or lose, I guarantee there will be a lot of complaints on here about the ref. As long as we win, he will be the best ref ever.

This is the latest on injured Cardiff City stars Kenneth Zohore, Aron Gunnarsson and Joe Bennett

Monday 30th October 2017

Cardiff City won't rush star men Aron Gunnarsson or Kenneth Zohore back into first team action, while Joe Bennett will be assessed ahead of the game against Ipswich Town.

Gunnarsson and Zohore both missed the Bluebirds' games against Middlesbrough and Millwall, both carrying ankle injuries, and Bennett limped off during the 0-0 draw against the Lions with a tight calf.

But despite preparing for a big clash against play-off hopefuls Ipswich on Tuesday night, Neil Warnock is unlikely to bring back Zohore and Gunnarsson as he does not want to risk further damage to two of his most influential players.

Bennett, meanwhile, faces a late fitness test after Warnock admitted the left-back's Millwal withdrawal was jut a precaution.

On whether the Bluebirds missed Gunnarsson and Zohore against Millwall, Warnock said: "I can say that but then again I could have said that last Saturday and we got a good result (against Middlesbrough).

"I think we were only a goalkeeping performance away from three points. But you've got to break them down and I didn't think we were good enough in midfield.

"You need a little bit more, a Gunnarsson type of player, to make something happen. But we've all got injuries at some stage so there's no good bleating about it. We've got to get onto Tuesday."

Lee Peltier could continue to deputise for Bennett on the left with Callum Paterson pushing for a first Cardiff start on the other side.

It remains to be seen whether Danny Ward earns a third successive start up front instead of Zohore, while Gunnarsson's absence has been mitigated by the form of on-loan Derby man Craig Bryson and Sol Bamba's midfield stint.

The Town boss believes there is more to come from his side with Emyr Huws perhaps in the squad for the first time for Saturday's home game with Preston having overcome his achilles injury, while Tom Adeyemi, like Huws a former Bluebird, having had his involvement limited by the illness which struck down a several players in pre-season and then a series of nagging injuries, most recently a hamstring problem.

“I hope so and I think so,” McCarthy said. “We’ve had a lot of injuries at the start of the season, injuries we’ve had to Tom Adeyemi and Emyr Huws have made a huge difference to it, and that’s not knocking the lads who have been playing.

“We saw Tristan Nydam on Saturday, it was such a tough game for him. It almost passed him by, the ball was in the air, he was getting bashed all over, but he’s been brilliant and will be for the club. But it would have been different with a bit more stature and experience in there.

“Even Kevin Bru just going on settled it down a bit with his ability to get on the ball. I would hope so, I would hope we can get better.”

The Blues manager says Cardiff’s impressive start, they were the early season leaders before dropping back a little more recently, is no surprise to him given their manager, his one-time Barnsley team-mate Neil Warnock, and the players at his disposal.

“Not at all. We saw what Kenneth Zohore could do [when we lost 3-1 there] last year,” he continued. “Neil’s made good signings in terms of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Junior Hoilett, they’ve got a good front three. He signed Danny Ward from Rotherham, who we were interested in.

I think Ipswich will bully us of the ball, McCarthy's plan and we will lose this one 1-0, just cannot see where after Saturdays game even without any ref decisions that we could score.

I hope as many have said Damour starts and lets give Tomlin at least a half to see if he can open them up.

Ref tonight is Oliver Langford.

Reffed us at Preston this season. Incorrectly called a foul leading up to PNE's opener.

Last season he reffed us coincidentally at home and away to Wigan.

Previous season he reffed us at Forest.

Cardiff have won their last three home league games against tonight's opponents, winning two of those games by a 3-1 score line

.
The Tractor Boys have only won once in their last eight league matches against the Bluebirds (D3 L4).

This will be the 20th meeting in all competitions between Warnock and Mick McCarthy – there have been seven Warnock wins, two draws, and 10 wins for McCarthy in the previous 19.

Warnock has won his last four home league matches against Ipswich all with different clubs (Crystal Palace, QPR, Leeds and Cardiff)

Ipswich have picked up nine points from losing positions so far this season, all coming away from home – no other Championship side has recovered more points from behind.

Ipswich gain a corner and the resulting kick zips across the Falmouth. Thankfully, the player mis-cues at the far post and the ball falls harmlessly over the line for a goal kick.
