Catalonia declare independence!!

Fri Oct 27, 2017 3:43 pm

 good for them. The Spanish economy may suffer big time now :old: Interesting developments over next few days and I for one hope the Spanish government don't damage their country any further by force and more violence against a democracy. :old:

A lot of Catalans don't want independence.

Re: Catalonia declare independence!!

No country in the world can recognise them as independant until a official referendum has been held and adhered to.

If they are recognised it will cause chaos around europe

Congratulations to those Catalans who want independence, and feel it is the best option for themselves to be separate from Spain!

I've been speaking to my family throughout the situation and, despite differing views, we all seem to agree that Spain have 'shot themselves in the foot' and as good as handed independence to Catalonia before there is any debate!

From what I have seen, Spain have shut down any democratic process, and the Catalonian people have handled themselves immaculately, almost to the point (in my opinion) that any nation that refuses to recognise Catalonia as an independent nation cannot justify that they are doing so to support democracy!

Congratulations to the Catalan people :thumbright:

This seems to be the whole point, it's perfectly acceptable that many Catalans may not want independence (note: in the referendum, they were not stopped from voting). However, the Spanish government don't seem to be allowing a true democratic process to take place and let them decide

why would you go and vote in a referendum that is illegal ,you do not want and do not agree with.?
note. the majority { 57% } did not vote.

I mean that economics isn't the only motivator for many people. Brexit is an example.

(Though Catalonia generates positive income)

Ps I do agree my original statement was a bit deep! :laughing6: (shipyard pale ale ;) )

Over 90% of Catalonia people want it although the Spanish bully boy tactics tried to stop the referendum and damage its integrity. Viva Catalunya - Wales is with you.

I wonder if the UK or US of Trump will send a military task force in now to protect them? It's a bit like Kuwait all over again :old:

That's not true 90% dont want it ,polls are split the recent referendum wasnt a true reflection of the people,90% of only 42 % turnout of an illegal referendum

For once you are correct Wez. However, there should be a proper legally binding referendum held to put the issue to bed.

I have read that the SNP are a little torn by what is happening. They don't want to support the Catalonian's because it might upset the European Union who support the Spanish Government. The SNP's strange stance is to leave one Union and join another  and they don't wish to tread on any toes.

I agree with you to a degree but economics is a powerful argument.

That said BREXIT is an excellent example because a large amount of voters refused to be blackmailed by project fear as they had heard the same crap time again every 3-5 years when General Elections come around.

Personally I voted to leave on principle (the EU is undemocratic and can't be truly held to account) rather than on the grounds of the economy or immigration, although there are still many weak minded people who will be swayed by the economic argument.

Tony, NO, they try to make Mallorca and all the Balearic Islands part of them, what it is, that Mallorca has been working with them for the last 10 years, Councils, govt's etc.

Mallorca would Never join Catalonia, they would if anything try for their own independence, but that would prob never happen.

Because of what Catalonia has done and been doing , Many Spanish bars have stopped buying products from Catalonia, Sam Miguel, meat etc.

All the main offices of banks have left Catalonia in the last 2 weeks and moved to Palma in Mallorca, so in fact we have gained.

Mallorca has already pledged its allegiance to Madrid. :thumbright: :thumbright:

The election in Catalonia was only done by 40% of their population and in one village where 580 people lived, 800 people some how voted

90%?? :?

I love you people who know what even the 'locals' don't!

One of the reasons the Catalans didn't go out and vote was that overall (majority) they don't back the idea of separation. Many ordinary Spaniards live/work in the Catalan region and (like Scotland's former First Minister Alec Salmond and our own Leanne Wood) their political leaders are only truly representative of their own personal views/ambitions!

Catalonia has created a dangerous situation not only for themselves but Spain as a country and also (some will rejoice in this with no thought of the consequences for the whole of Europe, including the UK) the EU machine itself!

I guess the only good thing that could come of it would be Barca's twin town Swansealona asking for the same but I think the rest of wales would back that vote! ;) :laughing6:

Sven agree catalonians know they cannot survive as a separate state/country and its only minority nationalists who want it just like here in uk. Having said that doesn't help when Spanish gvmnt bullies and provokes them unnecessarily.

Allan, Scotland would be the best equipped and even they know deep down it would be exceptionally tough now the oil industry is in decline. Wales, like Catalonia, simply couldn't cope on its own and as much as we (rightly on occasion) moan about the London-entric Government of the UK, it could be a lot worse! :thumbright:

I agree that the Spanish government have gone about this the wrong way and it will take some exceptional diplomacy to pull things back together! :ayatollah:

Scots income is governed by the price oil! So from one year to next cannot know income so cannot budget for anything, also their incme doesn't meet EU financial rules so cannot be full member! Not sure where that will leave them?
