" A VERY INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT LAST NIGHT "

Wed Sep 27, 2017 8:26 am

A VERY INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT :

Bamba vs Leeds played as a sweeper in front of the defence. He was sweeping the whole range of the pitch from right to left. It worked extremely well for the team and he was immense and along with Hoilett was instrumental in our critical win. So well done Warnock as well for adding another tactical possibility to our formation.
Not many managers use this tactic and it is not very common.

For me it looked like Warnock did it for the first time this season?

Did Warnock use it out of necessity because of our 3 key injuries or is it a tactic he has added to our armour?

Do you like it?

Do you agree Bamba was immense on the night?

I reckon he pre planned it, and its why Sol didn't start on Saturday.

Worked brilliant but not sure if bamba was entirely happy as appeared to have verbal arguement with NW at one point and did so on several occasions with fellow players he looked frustrated by something? :old:

I think he was a real strong character in the centre of the pitch, easily taking the ball off of their midfielders and also cool and calmly taking on their players with ease, creating chances for our wingers and strikers to move forward. He doesn't look capable of shooting from 20 yards though which is a shame as he could have pulled the trigger on a few occiasions. Class player, absolute monster to play against.

A tactical masterclass to play him there.
Gave Sol licence to wander and do what needed doing knowing full well yhat there were still 2 CBs behind him.
Definitely prep landed and not just a reaction to our injuries

Annis,Warnocks hand was obviously forced with the withdrawals. But what he is very good at is the horses for courses way.Bamba was awesome last night in that position but don't be too surprised if he doesn't play here Saturday.
People were questioning his selection against Sunderland but today that looks 100% justified.
The whole squad is geling together nicely and long may it last.

He played in that position for us 2/3 times last season .
It makes us very hard to break down

Bamba and Bennett had a spat at one point with Bamba pushing his arm away, he's a strong character and think he was getting a bit disjointed by some of our players giving possession away.

Bamba as sweeper was a warrior last night, Leeds didn't have a scooby how to handle him.

Re: " A VERY INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT LAST NIGHT "

Wed Sep 27, 2017 8:49 am

No doubt he was forced into it by injuries...but he has used the tactic before and will no doubt use it again. It's a huge help that Manga can play at centre back in place of Bamba and not weaken the team one jot!!!

Im sure Sol was put there to man mark Hernandez which he did as Hernandez was subbed half time.

It may have been tactical after the man was sent off but Sol did his job on the play maker

Nothing new, played the same formation at least 2/3 times last season with Bamber Leeds away being one of them.

Annis, he's done it a few times now and Imo this is when we've looked at our best.

Some may argue that it's defensive but he gives such a high level of protection it allows the midfielders to have more freedom but we do need players with legs in the middle for it to work.

I'd pick him before gunnar in that position I think his all round game is better.

That's why he should be captain

I have been arguing for a while that Gunnar is not a DCM, he plays there because he can't cover the ground like Ralls, Damour or Bryson can anymore.

In the post match pitch interview Sol intimated that he couldn't play there week in week out.

We have options, that keeps the opposition guessing

Cheers Steve and a couple of others :thumbright:

Which shows we can move Bamba around and we are not weakened at all :thumbright: :thumbright:

I agree. It's a shame he isn't 10 years younger otherwise I'd have him there every week.

The main thing is that because he is so quick, mobile and reads the game so well he releases the other players around him to press higher up.

The issue with Gunnar and Ralls (despite the fact they have both played very well so far) is that positionally they both play quite deep and aren't as mobile. When we have Bamba, Bryson and Damour only one (Bamba) plays deep and the other two are right in the faces of the opposition making sure they can't settle and frequently winning the ball back e.g. the first goal.

I'd actually like to see Gunnar play with Bryson and Damour to see if that had a similar effect. It's harsh on Ralls but worth a try to see what options could work in a very long season.

Exactly this I thought Demour was fantastic last night. Our midfield should be the three you mentioned for sure every game.

Playing as a sweeper last night and bringing the ball out of defence, he reminded me a bit of Franz Beckenbauer. His composure on the ball was sublime, and apart from one obvious exception, his distribution was first class too.
You could see he gave everything, and I don't think that at this age he has the legs to play there every game, but Warnock knew that Bamba would be up for this game in a serious way and I'm sure his added drive was partly because he was playing against a club that let him go.
For me a MOM performance and I would love to see him play there regularly, though I think Bamba's legs would prefer him to play centre back.

I thought Bamba was brilliant, if he could perform like that in that position week in week out then he makes that position his own, he looked like Patrick Viera last night lol. I know a lot of people will disagree but I think that position is our weakest link, I don’t think Gunner is strong enough or holds his position well enough for the role. Does he win the ball as often as Bamba did? probably not. The extra height is also a huge bonus. Although I still think Gunner has a lot to offer I personally don’t think he is as good as people make out sometimes.

In saying that its only one game this season that Bamba has played that role so far too early to know if he can do it over a season. If he could do it Bamba, Ralls and Bryson would be my choice.

This season Warnock has played almost exclusively a 4411 or 4141 system. The latter has been used when the opposition played with a player behind their striker but in front of their midfield. Last night Bamba played that role, ie between our two banks of four, combatting that floating player [Leeds #19; Hernandez], as he did last season, also to great effect, against Grealish of Aston Villa.

Great post and I said something similar in the MOM thread regarding Gunnarsson.
I've never seen Gunnarsson command the game, pass, win headers and generally play as well as Bamba did last night.
I see no reason not to give him another run there Saturday.

We saw a lot more of Sol in the second half - when Leeds were down to 10 men. Basically, he had no one to mark and could wander around at will. I’d rather keep him at Centre back if possible.

He actually played the same role at home to villa and we won that game also scoring three gaols

With the 2 blue arsed flys buzzing around him last night I think he could do a job there more often. The engines on Damour and Bryson has to be seen to be believed.I think he might be a bit too exposed without a pair like those 2.

We've already got a great captain in Morrison. But Bamba is also a captain, we need leaders throughout the whole squad which I think we've finally got.

Unfortunately could not make it last night but watched on the box, I thought two of the Sky commentators/pundits/twats whatever you want to call them were actually quite dismissive of Cardiff last night, both Hinchcliffe and whoever the other bloke was who wore a WW2 demob suit.

They totally wrote Cardiff off and continued the theme of the Championship on 5 view talking Leeds up for Promotion already and saying City were not a footballing side and could only play one way. Bamba looked like Patrick Viera esque the way he played and apart from the right back for Leeds Ayling the rest were pretty normal. I even think without the sending off it would have still been a well deserved footballing passing win.

I thought Manga was solid and looked really comfortable on the ball behind Bamba.

I personally thought Leeds looked terrified in the tunnel and on the pitch and Cooper should have gone for the two footed lunge well before his sending off. :bluebird:
