About Portsmouth

Portsmouth Football Club is a professional football club in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, which will play in League One, the third tier of English football, following their promotion from League Two in the 2016–17 season. Home matches have been played at Fratton Park since the club's formation in 1898. Portsmouth have been champions of England twice, in 1949 and 1950, and won the FA Cup twice, in 1939 and 2008.

Portsmouth first qualified for European competition, playing in the 2008–09 UEFA Cup. In this period, the club had international footballers including England players Glen Johnson, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, David James and Sol Campbell. Financial problems, however, soon set in and Portsmouth were relegated to the Football League Championship in 2010. In 2012, they were again relegated, to League One, and again, in 2013, to League Two. They began the 2013–14 season in the fourth tier of the English football league system for the first time since the late 1970s.

Portsmouth became the largest fan-owned football club in England, after the Pompey Supporters Trust (PST) successfully gained possession of Fratton Park in April 2013. After winning the League Two title in the final game of the 2016–17 season, Portsmouth became the 5th club to win all four top tiers of professional English football (after Wolves, Burnley, Preston and Sheffield United).

I know it's £8 for ST holder adult if you buy before Tuesday. £10 on the night or non ST holders. Only canton and grandstand is open. Good price though.
£8 ST holder adult
£5 ST 16-21 & concessions
£3 ST under 16s.

On the night or non ST Holders all prices increased by £2

Danny Ward

07/08/17

Only got 10 minutes at the end but was another who looked sharp. His pace was evident and Ward actually seemed more direct than the man he replaced, Junior Hoilett.

Could start against Portsmouth in midweek Carabao Cup action to further press his case.

Really hope fans turn up for this. Can't see Noone and O'Keefe playing tbh. Both are available and Warnock won't risk injury. I'm hoping to see Damour and Mendez after Saturday.

Cardiff City want momentum from Carabao Cup run as Neil Warnock declares 'let's give it a go' versus Portsmouth

By Dominic Booth

Monday 7th August 2017

Neil Warnock may have his sights firmly locked on a promotion charge with Cardiff City this season, but the manager wants to compete on multiple fronts.

Because while last season saw the Bluebirds dumped out of both cup competitions at the opening stage, Warnock — now with a newly-expanded squad — isn't prepared to lose focus in the same way.

He wants Cardiff to gather valuable momentum, generated by the 1-0 victory over Burton Albion on Saturday, secured by a morale-boosting late goal from Kenneth Zohore.

And though Tuesday night's Carabao Cup match against Portsmouth will see Warnock shuffle his pack somewhat, it provides a chance for those fringe players to press their case for more regular inclusion.

That's especially true in the case of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Loic Damour and Danny Ward; the three new signings whose impact off the bench at Burton drew praise from the boss.

All three could make their first competitive starts for the Bluebirds against League One Pompey in the cup tie. All three could feasibly merit first team inclusion against Aston Villa on Saturday given their displays at the Pirelli Stadium.

"I'm going to play some other lads," admitted Warnock. "I'll definitely play Murph (Brian Murphy) and one or two others, probably Mendez."

The manager's desire to rotate his squad is understandable of course, given that the mouth-watering league clash with Villa lies just around the corner.

With that in mind, the likes of Zohore, Aron Gunnarsson and Sol Bamba may well be rested. The young Danish striker has a battle with Villa captain John Terry to prepare for, let's not forget. Gunnarsson will be tested against Glenn Whelan, Bamba against Scott Hogan and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

But while last season's mediocrity was illustrated by limp defeats to Bristol Rovers and Fulham in the cups, Warnock knows the value of a cup run.

He gained notoriety with Sheffield United on a sparkling streak to the FA Cup semi-finals in 2003. The Blades were sunk by Arsenal in a controversial encounter that year, but Warnock's side continued their meteoric rise with promotion to the Premier League three years later.

This time around, he's given himself a year to propel Cardiff in the same direction. Which is why he won't lie down against Pompey.

"I want to get through that (game against Porstmouth) if I can," added Warnock. "I don't see why we can't have a run in the cup."

The manager joked that his assistant (Kevin Blackwell) was demanding a full strength side. But Warnock, forever the pragmatist, will pick and chose carefully. Following Kadeem Harris' three-month lay-off, the Bluebirds can ill-afford more injury problems at this early stage of the season.

Promotion-chasing sides like Villa, who boast an expensively-assembled squad, blessed with depth, will deal with the rigour of the season. The Bluebirds are less well-stocked but nonetheless will ask their hungry players, starved of first-team football, to step up on Tuesday night.

"Blacky wants me to play the full team! He wants to win everything, "joked Warnock.

"But we've got to be a bit careful if I'm honest.

"Young (Matty) Kennedy has done very well in pre-season and I was disappointed that he had to miss out (at Burton). I said to him 'you've done brilliant'. He's in front of Craig (Noone) at the moment so I will probably play Kennedy on Tuesday.

"I'll probably play Stuart O'Keefe, I've already spoken to him about the game.

"So let's have a look at some of these other lads.

"But it's a great habit, winning, and we really want to give it a go."

Not a bad call and like you I'm looking forward to this one. I think Neil Warnock will take it a lot more seriously than a few previous managers (Malky being the big exception) and we should see a positive display :ayatollah:

looks pretty decent despite only having 3 of Saturdays starting 11.

A decent start from a City side obviously up for the task. Kennedy looking particularly lively and both Ward and Dacour trying to create. A decent run from Halford ended when he crossed the ball into the stand behind the goal. Neil Warnock and Kevin Blackwell in discussion as Pompey send a 20 yard effort wide of the city goal :ayatollah:

A good run from Jazz Richards ends with the ball just running away as he heads toward goal :ayatollah:

A decent cross from the right is headed goal wards by Ward but Pompey take the ball straight up the other end and score!

Goal (32 mins): City 0 - Pompey 1 :(

Re: LATEST NEWS " CARDIFF CITY v PORTSMOUTH " MATCH THREAD

Tue Aug 08, 2017 7:30 pm

Half-time: Cardiff City 0 - 1 Portsmouth

A good start by City got a little flat as the half wore on and Pompey were allowed more into the game resulting in their 'soft' goal. The cohesion of early game gave way to some pretty sloppy passing and half-time will be an opportunity for Neil Warnock to explain a few things in a way the team will surely understand
