General election 2017: Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May grilled in live election show

Sky News

Monday 29th May 2917

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn
Jeremy Corbyn has defended his foreign policy views and tax-raising plans in a live election special.

The Labour leader was first up in the Battle for Number 10 show, before Theresa May took centre stage.

Mrs May confirmed the Conservatives would put a cap on social care costs as she defended her controversial reforms.

The leaders are not appearing together, as Mrs May refused to take part in a head-to-head encounter. Mr Corbyn chose to go first after winning a coin toss.

The show is being broadcast on Sky News and Channel 4 until 22:00 BST.

In a Q&A with the studio audience, a business-owner in the audience attacked Mr Corbyn's "ruthless short-sighted policies" such as increasing corporation tax and putting VAT on private school fees, which Labour would do to fund free primary school meals.

"This country is badly divided between the richest and the poorest" the Labour leader replied, asking the man whether he was "happy" that children were going to school hungry and being taught in "supersized" classes.

Brexit and migration

He was also pressed on his previous campaigning in Northern Ireland, with a man in the audience saying he had attended a memorial for IRA members.

The Labour leader said he had been seeking a "dialogue" in the 1970s and 1980s and that he had marked a minute's silence "for everyone who died in Northern Ireland".

He was also asked back-to-back questions on Brexit - one from a Leave voter calling for immigration controls and another from an unhappy Remain supporter.

Answering the first, he refused to set a target for migration numbers, saying Labour would act to prevent the undercutting of wages, and told the Remain supporter Labour had to "accept the reality of the referendum".

Queen questions

Mr Corbyn, a committed republican, was asked by Jeremy Paxman on why abolishing the Monarchy was not in Labour's manifesto.

"It's not in there because we are not going to do it," he replied, adding that he had "a very nice chat with the Queen".

"The law is there," he said, "and that is what will prevail".

He was also challenged on his comments at the time of the 1982 Falklands War, saying he had been pressing for a "stopping" of the conflict and that the UN should have had the chance to prevent it from happening.

He said he had described the death of Osama Bin Laden as a "tragedy" because he wanted him to be arrested and put on trial, and that the use of the term "friends" towards Hamas had been "inclusive language" at a meeting where he had been promoting the need for a two-state solution.

May on social care

Mrs May was asked about the Tories' planned reforms to the way social care is funded, with a woman in the audience describing them as a "dementia tax".

The PM confirmed an overall cap would be put on costs, which had not been included in the Tories' election manifesto, but did not say where this would be set.

Mrs May promised a consultation document would be published and that she would listen to charities and voters on where the cap should be.

She would also not set a level at which the winter fuel allowance will be taken away - the Tories have said richer pensioners will no longer receive the benefit.

"I've met pensioners who have said they don't think they should get that winter fuel payment," she said.

THERESA MAY TONIGHT REGARDING BREXIT

During an interview with Jeremy Paxman, the Prime Minister vowed to be a "difficult woman" to seal the best possible deal.

She said: "I'm not prepared to sign up to a bad deal to the UK. We're in there to get the best deal for the United Kingdom.

"I'm optimistic because I think the European Union will want to continue their relationship with us. We'll be negotating hard."

I think Corbyn is a disgrace and if I had my way he would be sitting out the rest of the election behind bars for treason

I watched the whole programme and tried to be objective. It is amazing how one can pick and choose bits of the programme to provide a wholly false picture.
I wont be voting for either of these parties, BUT it was patently obvious that Corbyn performed far better. Theresa MY was nervous in front of an audience and came across (dare I say it) as weak and wobbly. She hardly ever answered the question set.
She had to admit a large reduction in police officers (20000 I think) while he was Home Secretary!.
It was quite funny that Corbyn would only say that immigration would probably fall under Labour. He was criticised by Paxman. May had to admit that the Tories had twice provided targets for immigration in previous elections and trumpeted this as one of their strengths. They would ensure it was under 100,000. In their 7 years it has increased(!) Presently it is £175000 plus from non Euro immigration alone. (I think Paxman said 245000 in total.

As I say,I wont vote for either. BUT whether you agree with Corbyn or not - he came across far better than May!

May got absolutely battered there. Did she give a straight answer to a single question all night? No wonder she refused to enter a debate!

She's crumbling under the pressure and making Corbyn look the better leader. 3 different online poles tonight have Corbyn winning the debate by 75% to 25%

she isnt very good at public speaking. i agree.
but not battered on content. .eg. he wanted Bin Laden captured not taken out by a drone. this from a man who only a few days ago was saying our armed forces would only be deployed if there was a clear need......now for those who have superior memories to goldfish these two things dont add up.
but that seems to be the trend this election. who and what he is dont matter. Labour voters will just vote for the Jeremy in their head not the real one.

That has to be the worst performance I've ever seen from a standing Prime Minister. Is she trying to throw it rather than take the rap for a hard Brexit?
I'm certainly no fan of Corbyn but if this was your first experience of the 2 leaders there's no way you would vote for May.

Are you all taking City Slicker seriously?.. He's blatantly trolling and fishing to start arguments instead of debating.
You're all as bad as each other on this forum whether you're left or right wing. You all revert to name calling and a "who shouts the loudest" contest instead of debating and talking about actual policies and what they're going to mean to you and the rest of the public.
I'm split completely down the middle. I like corbyns policies, but not confident in his leadership or if those policies are achievable. Not particularly fond of the tories unfair policies but believe despite her terrible public talking and cowardice in staying away from a debate, May would be the better in a brexit deal and more decisive in the case of security. Although I do like the fact Corbyn wouldn't send troops into war to get killed without looking at the larger picture and seeking a peaceful resolution first. Who wouldn't want that instead of friends or family in the army being put in danger for no particular reason (Iraq)?..

Unfortunately that underlines the state of some of the media coverage in the UK. Over 80% being owned by people who don't live in the country.
Just like in a football match I try to judge what I see and make my own mind up.
I stand by my view that Corbyn performed better than May did on the night. It appears that not only does she not like being "put on the spot" (not many of us do) but she finds it very difficult to think on her feet.
May made strong and stable leadership a central theme to her campaign then I was expecting better from her. This is one area of leadership where she seems weak.
( But obviously in other areas she may or may not be far better.).!

It is a bit hypocritical to name call those who use name calling isn't it? :? Politics is a passionate business and it comes with the territory.

As for the debate your assessment clearly shows that you found Corbyn the winner on nearly all accounts. Therefore it seems a bit odd that people are still coming out with the narrative that May is a better leader  which is probably due to being brainwashed by the Tory leaning media. He has his faults for sure but in a one to one choice with the wooden doll he is clearly the better leader.

May was fcuking useless. Its like a team "defending" a 4-0 lead from a home match in a European home & away football tie. She just sat there and said nothing. The fact that she didn't win the tory leadership through normal channel highlights all that she is crap at, TV and people. In todays telegenic world she is not up to this sort of encounter. This don't fcuk up strategy is so poor and they need to go on the front foot soon or her landslide will be little more than what she has now.

It didn't really matter what Corbyn said, most people have made up there minds. I have been entitled to vote since 85 and have a keen interest in politics so I have made my mind up on what would happen if he did win. Its a bit like brexit, it was a protest that actually won and when they won nobody knew what to do. This is what a labour government would be like.

If you rang me and asked how I was going to vote in the last edition of Britain's got talent I would have said "the Cardiff girl", did I really vote for her, no, I didn't vote for anyone as I don't watch it, but as a true bluebird I would have said "the right thing". This is what happen on opinion polls. You say you want caring sharing luvvies, but when you go in that voting booth you want that boring robotic cow and common sense prevails, you vote for the tory and don't tell your friends.

I am inspired like 97, no. Its like the US elections. May wouldn't have called the election if Andy Burnham was the leader, but she knows when you enter that booth you won't vote for Corbyn.

Well my postal vote went off yesterday and I voted Labour

Re: TONIGHTS " THERESA MAY & JEREMY CORBYN "

I've already voted, Labour, but decided to do that because I think in Caerphilly we have an excellent MP in Wayne David and I wasn't going to desert him because of Jeremy Corbyn. After watching the Q & A from last night if I hadn't voted and would now vote Labour and this time for both Jeremy Corbyn and Wayne David. In my opinion on the performances last night JC was head and shoulders above the TM, Why?, because he came across as more personable, more likeable and most importantly more sincere.

One of the most telling points from last night was the difference between the two on Brexit, JC stressed the importance to the Country of still having tariff free access to the EU whilst TM offered only the soundbites we all expect, "Brexit Means Brexit" and "No Deal is Better Than A Bad Deal". Tariff free access to the EU WILL mean the UK accepting the ' Free Movement Of People' and WILL require the UK to continue to pay into the EU budget. TM on the other hand doesn't say anything other than the Two soundbites so we have absolutely no idea what that means, more worrying in my opinion is that she doesn't know either.

I don't agree with everything that JC does or says but I found myself coming down on his side on most everything discussed, Bexit aside, he gave a vision for a more Fair & Equal society for the UK and one I'm glad I have voted for.

TM started this election hoping to get a landslide victory but, and against most peoples expectations, JC is making a real fist of this campaign and I think it will closer than we think. TM will probably still win but a couple more performances like last night and who knows.
